Milan
New theatre building
After a long and problem-filled construction (begun in 1984), the new home of Milan's Piccolo Theatre, designed by Marco Zanuso, was inaugurated in 1996.
It stands in an asymetrical area between Corso Garibaldi and the ring road of Foro Bonaparte. It was designed to be an urban 'monument' that attempts to unite and improve its surroundings by determining a new configuration of public spaces.
It is a polyhedric volume dominated by wide copper roofs, almost a turreted island in which the central, pointed body becomes the visual pin on which the composition is hinged.
The entrance and the main room face onto the new square in front of Foro Buonaparte, while the functional and technological sections lie on the side that faces Via Legnano.
The use of brick to line the exterior, in line with the local architecture, assimilates the Theatre to the nearby Castle.
