Palazzo delle Stelline

Old girls' orphanage

The 17th century façade of the old Stelline orphanage can be seen on Corso Magenta in the ancient district of Porta Vercellina that boasts many religious buildings of historical importance (S. Maria delle Grazie, S. Vittore al Corpo, Monastero Maggiore, S. Ambrogio).

The building was designed by Fabio Mangone for Federico Borromeo as a girls' orphanage to replace the convent of the Disciplini di S. Maria della Stella.

Of the original building, only the façade, some vaulted rooms, the courtyard and the portico of the larger courtyard remain. Demolition of much of the building was permitted in 1973 to make way for a conference centre and hotel, and now it is difficult to separate the two parts.
