Cremona

In the heart of the Po plain

Cremona lies in the heart of the Po plain on a small rise beside the river that once ran through the ancient town centre.

Founded by the Romans in 218 BC on a previous Celtic settlement, it still has some of the grid pattern of roads laid down by the Romans. Current Cremona is a historical town based on a medieval layout and with many buildings that bear witness to its past.

There are many medieval constructions among the low buildings in the cobbled streets of the old centre around the central square.

Right in the centre lies the Piazza del Comune, the civil and religious centre, and one of the loveliest squares in northern Italy. The most important buildings from an architectural viewpoint surround this square: the Torazza (the tallest brick bell-tower in Italy), the splendid Romanesque Duomo, the octagonal Baptistery, the 13th century Loggia dei Militi, and the Palazzo del Comune flanked by the 16th century Arengario.
