Milan
Along the river
This park, created in 1983 has a protected area of over 70km square and includes the Parco di Monza, the Lambro valley and the Alserio and Pusiano lakes.
The northern area of the park has considerable natural attractions: vast woods of plane trees and oaks, streams and small valleys crossed by many paths.
The central area is a compromise between the Milan hinterland and splendid villas and their gardens. At the end of the 16th century there were many farms and castles along the Lambro which were transformed into villas for the Milan aristocracy. The Renaissance Villa, Sacro Cuore, Villa Jacini and Villa Taverna in Canonica are just some of the park's cultural attractions.
The water in the rivers was until a few years ago, among Italy's most polluted, until the park instituted a great clean-up and they are now a breeding ground for trout, carp and chub.
