Piazza San Sepolcro

The old city forum

The Roman public forum in Milan was located between Piazza Pio XI and Piazza San Sepolcro in the city centre at the intersection of the 'cardo massimo' (today the Vias Nerino, Cantu and S.Margerita) and the decumanus (now the Vias S.Maria alla Porta, S.Maria Fulcorina and del Bollo).

Very little of the former piazza a remians however. The red Verona brickwork in the crypt of the San Sepolcro church has been identified as the ground of the former piazza and in 1990 during underground restoration works on the Biblioteca Ambrosiana the remains of some steps were found indicating the end of the former piazza and the access to the surrounding porticoes.

A visit to the underground rooms is possible by prior arrangement with the directors of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana.
