Stockholm
The pride of the Old Town
Storkykan, or Sankt Nicolai church, is located between the palace and the Stock Exchange in the Old Town. It is the oldest congregation church in Stockholm. Storkyrkan has five naves and was built of brick. The Baroque façade is different from the Gothic-style interior. It was the city's architect J.E. Carlberg who led the changing of the exterior from Mediaeval style to Baroque, in order to harmonize with the palace. At the end of the eighteenth century the aim was to make the church look more like the Stock Exchange building, and some annexes were built. Morning services are held every Sunday at 11am.
