Beautiful Katarina kyrka - its praises having been sung by Joakim Thåström, legendary punk rocker - is the first central church in Sweden. It is also strangely haunted by fires. The yellow exterior is made in a Classical style. Construction began in 1656 according to Jean de la Vallées design. A big fire destroyed the roof, the dome and the interior in 1723. Restoration was led by Göran Josuae Adelcrantz, who also designed the new, higher octagonal tower. In 1990 the church again suffered from a massive fire, and the interior, the tower and the dome were destroyed once more, but de Vallées walls were unharmed. Ove Hidemark led the restoration work, and the church was recreated as the Baroque church it was before the fire.
Some well-known names can be found on the tombstones outside the building, folksinger Cornelis Wreswjik being one of them. Morning services are held every Sunday at 11am.
