An important aspect of Italy tourism is it's weather. Much like the US, Italy experiences the weather differently depending on where you are. In the north, near the Alps, it gets very cold in the winter but the summer months are warm. Central Italy averages mid-30s to mid-40s in the winter and mid-80s during the summer. The southern areas rarely dip into the 40s during winter and the summer months usually range in the 80s.
Italy is known as the "Boot" because of its shape - it looks like a boot kicking the island of Sicily! As a peninsula extending out into the Mediterranean Sea, it has an extensive coast, dotted with tiny villages, sandy beaches, ship ports and picturesque scenery.
The Dolomite Mountains in the north are part of the Alps. The Apennine Mountains cross down the center of Italy. Much of the rest of the country is fertile farm land with rolling hills, vineyards and groves of olive or lemon trees.
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean.
