The central European country of Slovenia, which is bordered by Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary, is a crossroads of European culture and language. For people looking for the road less traveled, the glacial Lake Bled in the Julian Alps and Ljubljana’s gorgeous bridges are must-sees.
Slovenia welcomes its guests with a generally mild and temperate climate. You'll find plenty of ways to savor any of its four distinct seasons. The day-by-day weather in Slovenia will vary based on your destination, of course. An alpine climate pervades the northwest near Austria and Italy. In the eastern plateaus and valleys near Hungary and Croatia, expect mild to hot summers and cold winters. On the coast, soak up the Mediterranean sunshine that provides warm weather most of the year, and a pleasantly mild wintertime. Much of Slovenia’s annual rainfall pours down in spring and autumn.
Half the size of Switzerland, this country in Central and Southeastern Europe shares its borders with Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. Its smidgen of southwestern coastline faces the Adriatic Sea.
Forests cover more than half of Slovenia, but the remaining areas brim with beaches, orchards, snow-dusted mountains, hillside vineyards and captivating plains of golden yellow sunflowers. This variety is partly a result of four geographic regions meeting up in Slovenia: the Alps, the Dinaric area, the Pannonian plain and the Mediterranean.
Slovenia's national flag pays tribute to its highest mountain, the three-peaked Triglav, and its famous caves in Postojna draw tourists to their dramatic stalactites and stalagmites.
