Home to the majestic Andes mountains, the Amazon Basin and the lost city of Machu Picchu, Peru presents travelers with a breadth of experiences and adventures. Travelers can enjoy a boat trip around Lake Titicaca, the largest lake in all of South America. The Volcano El Misti, the Colca Canyon and the ancient capital city of Cuzco afford visitors with geographical and historical treasures to explore. On the southern coast of Peru visitors fly high above the Nazca Lines, huge geometric designs of birds and animals that can only be seen from the sky, thought to have been built between 600 and 900 AD. From the colonial buildings, museums and plazas to the climbing and hiking mecca of the Huaraz, Peru is a land of striking natural wonders and rich cultural histories.
On the Peruvian coast, temperatures tend to be mild sub-tropical, averaging 50-70°F, but the humidity can be high. The warmer months are February and March; cooler months are June to October and most of the coast is foggy. February and April are the driest months, while August is the wettest. In Cusco, the temperature range is from 48-54°F, and it can be rainy from November to April. The Amazon region offers temperatures of about 90°F year round, and the humidity is high. The rainy season here is from November through April. You can expect several strong showers during the day, but it usually doesn't rain all day.
Peru encompasses the Andean Mountains, the Amazon Basin and a coastal region. Very diverse, each region has a climate and character of its own. The Amazon Basin covers about 60% of Peru's landscape with the famous rainforest, rivers and lakes. The Coastal region is home to more than half of the country's people. It includes the capital city of Lima. The Andes reach elevations in excess of 20,000 feet, so take precautions if your vacation includes a visit here. Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca are in this area.
