Destinations > Alpine, Central & Eastern Europe > Croatia
Croatia This beautiful country stretches along the Adriatic coast in the heart of Europe. One of Croatia's appeals is its diverse array of things to see and do, from wine tasting to sailing and diving on the beach; from health resorts to architectural sights dating back to 50 AD, there is something in Croatia for everyone.
Zagreb, the nation's capital, is situated on the slopes of Medvednica Mountain and along the banks of the Sava river; it's a center of arts and culture with extensive museums and galleries hosting world-class exhibits and festivals for all to enjoy. In the city of Dubrovnik, nature lovers can find a true Mediterranean landscape filled with narrow streets and small squares, medieval walls and palaces.
Croatia's vegetation is highly varied, from grape vines and olive trees in Dalmatia to oak forests in Slavonia, with a spectacular coastline all throughout. Croatians are justifiably proud of their broad palette of high quality food and wine. Visitors should sample the excellent seafood as well as the "manistra od bobica" (beans and fresh maize soup), a local favorite. generations past.
Almost 10 percent of the country is protected as part of a national park or preserve, the most famous of these being Plitvice Lakes. But beyond its natural beauty, Croatia has been a center of culture for over 2,000 years. Zagreb, the capital, is a center of arts and culture with extensive museums and galleries hosting world-class exhibits and festivals for everyone.
