  3. At this time of year, the Austrian capital is a place of nostalgia and romance, with concerts, nativity displays and many official Advent Markets selling a vast array of seasonal gifts and mouth-watering treats. Join your Local Expert for a private tour of Maria Theresa's Schönbrunn Palace. Then get your cameras ready for a circuit of the famous ring road. This grand boulevard, built along the lines of the old city walls, showcases many of the capital's architectural masterpieces, including the Opera House and Hofburg Imperial Residence. You also see the City Hall and its surrounding parklands, festively decorated in a sea of lights – the perfect setting for the Viennese Christmas Market. Here your Tour Director will introduce you to a market stallholder to enjoy a Viennese winter dessert, complemented perfectly with a traditional fragrant glass of ‘Glühwein'.
    hotel:Hilton, Vienna.
  4. There is free time in the morning to join the Christmas shoppers in the elegant boutiques, sidewalk cafés and busy arcades of Kärtner Strasse in the heart of Vienna or to perhaps take an optional experience into the Vienna Woods to the Christmas Market in the traditional spa town of Baden. Later, journey through the rich farmlands of eastern Austria towards the lakes and mountains of the Salzkammergut and the enchanting city of Salzburg.
    meal(s):BB, D
hotel:Castellani Park Hotel, Salzburg (2 nights).
  5. The spires and domes of Salzburg's old town are often draped in snow come December. Walk with a Local Expert to see Mozart's family home on the Getreidegasse - beautifully decorated at this time of year. Then walk on to the rosy hues of the 500-year-old market in front of the cathedral. Culinary delicacies, candied fruits, hot mulled wine and the lovingly decorated stalls invite visitors to stop and browse.
    hotel:Castellani Park Hotel, Salzburg.
  6. A lovely drive brings you to the Inn Valley and the mountain-ringed Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck. In front of the Golden Roof, surrounded by beautifully preserved medieval façades, you'll find the traditional Christmas Market is in full swing. After some time to explore, enjoy delightful scenery and healthy fresh air on a horse-drawn carriage ride. In the evening, drive to the charming town of Hall in Tirol, which boasts Austria's best preserved ensemble of historical buildings. Soak up the friendly Yuletide atmosphere at Hall's traditional Christmas Market – but don't fill up on too much Krapfen and Kiachli because a highlight medieval banquet awaits in a 700-year-old building. After delighting your palate with Austrian specialties and wine, it's a merry drive back to Innsbruck!
    meal(s):BB, SE
    hotel:Hilton, Innsbruck.
  7. Travel into the beautiful scenery of the German Alps to visit Oberammergau, home of the Passion Play since 1634. See the immense theater and admire the colorfully painted chalets, then continue to the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein perched on a spectacular Alpine mountainside. With a Local Expert, visit exuberantly decorated apartments including the Throne Room before driving on to the Bavarian capital of Munich. Please note: Neuschwanstein Castle visits require a good level of mobility due to the number of stairs in the building and up-hill on-foot access to the castle itself during Winter. Those who do not wish to ascend to the castle can enjoy a coffee and cake and the beautiful castle vista.
hotel:Hilton Munich City, Munich (2 nights).
  8. Enjoy a city orientation tour which concludes in the Marienplatz beside the soaring Town Hall, famous for its Glockenspiel. Here, beneath the gigantic Christmas tree, Munich’s traditional Christmas Market is an entrancing festival of light and music. Tonight, join your friends for a festive Celebration Dinner with wine and good cheer!

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Germany and Austria must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering these countries.

  • The currency in Germany and Austria is the Euro (€).  While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive in Europe, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Traditional German cuisine is rich and delicious.  Try specialties including a variety of bratwurst with sauerkraut, cold cuts, spätzle and potato dumplings.  For dessert you cannot miss the world famous Black Forest Gateau.   Beer is a big part of German culture; sample a variety of German offerings including pilsner, Kölsch and sour beers.  Wine is also popular throughout Germany, and world-class whites are produced in the Rhine and Mosel regions.

Austrian cuisine is hearty and satisfying and reflects regional influences from Italy, Hungary, Germany and the Balkans. Try a variety of sausages including the popular Wiener Schnitzel and Viennese specialties such as goulash and apple strudel.

  • We recommend packing layers to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress.  It’s important to bring comfortable walking shoes and a waterproof jacket with a hood. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • A service charge is typically included in the price of food at restaurants in Germany and Austria.  When leaving a tip, it is appropriate to simply round up or add up to 10 percent to your bill.   Rather than leaving your money on the table, be prepared to leave it with your waiter when you pay your bill.  If you are expecting change, simply tell them how much you will need back after gratuity.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 48 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
