Passports and Visas
A valid passport is required by all foreign visitors to Australia. Every nationality except New Zealanders need a visa. Tourist visas and Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) visas are valid for three months. Longer-term visas can be applied for if necessary.
Money Matters
The currency in Australia is the Australian Dollar. You can exchange foreign currency or cash at almost any bank or exchange bureau. Travelers checks generally get a better rate than cash, though banks take out a commission. Credit cards are widely accepted and ATMs all over the country accept credit cards. Tipping in Australia is becoming more popular, but still not required - 5-15% is average. Taxi drivers are always grateful if you leave the change.
Electricity
Voltage used throughout Australia is 220-240V, and adapters can be purchased prior to traveling.
Packing Tips
The Australian climate is very similar to that of the United States, but at opposite times of the year, ranging from warm in the summer to cold in the winter. The various regions experience different climates at different times of the year; therefore, it is best to determine the specific climate for the time and regions you will be traveling. Generally speaking, pack light, comfortable clothing that can be layered if it becomes chilly. A light jacket would be advisable in the fall and spring, with heavier clothing in the winter.
