Passports and Visas
A valid passport is required by all foreign visitors to Spain. Spain is part of the border-free travel zone subject to the Schengen Agreement, along with Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Portugal. USA, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Israeli citizens may enter Spain as tourists without a visa and stay up to 90 days. EU passport holders may come and go as they please.
Money Matters
The currency in Spain is the euro. Check current exchange rates before traveling. Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards, and travelers checks are widely accepted throughout the country, however cash will be easier outside the large cities, so plan accordingly. Currency exchange agents are located in the major cities and tourist areas (American Express, Thomas Cook). ATM machines are located at most major banks, but may be limited to bank hours and possibly closed on weekends. <BR
Electricity
Electricity in Spain is 220 volts, 50 cycle AC, as compared to 110 volts, 60 cycle AC in the U.S. When taking along electrical appliances, a converter and a plug adapter are needed to operate them.
Packing Tips
In summer, cotton clothing is best. A windbreaker or light jacket is useful for evenings. The Average temperature in July and August is between 80 and 90 degrees. Summers can be extremely hot throughout Spain, while certain southern destinations remain fairly mild even in winter. If you're traveling to the coastal towns or islands, be sure to bring your bathing suit, as the beaches are some of the best in the world.
