Electricity
Voltage used throughout Japan is 100 volts, A.C. There are two kinds of frequencies: 50 Hertz in eastern Japan and 60 Hertz in western Japan (including Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka). There are no columnar-shaped plugs or 3-pin plugs used in Japan but 2-flat-pin plugs are used instead. Adapters should be purchased before you travel.
Packing Tips
If you're traveling to Northern Japan, it's best to bring a jacket and long pants, even in the summer. In the winter months bring your parka, as it gets quite cold and snowy. Southern Japan is on another latitude and has nice warm breezes with plenty of rain. An umbrella is recommended any time of year, and in the winter a jacket is necessary.
Passports and Visas
A valid passport is required by all foreign visitors to Japan. Visas are not required by many foreign nationals, depending on the purpose and length of the visit. To apply for a visa, you must apply in person at a Japanese Embassy or a consulate, usually in your home country. The following documents must be submitted whatever the purpose of visit: (1) Valid passport; (2) Two passport photos taken within the six months previous to the date of application; (3) Two official visa application forms, available at the embassy or consulate; (4) Documents certifying the purpose of the visit. As the type of documents required for the application may differ according to the purpose of your visit, you are advised to check with the Japanese Embassy or consulate beforehand.
Money Matters
The unit of Japanese currency is the yen. Coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 yen and bank notes in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 yen. Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards, and travelers checks are widely accepted throughout the country, however outside the cities it will be easier to use cash, so try to plan accordingly. Currency exchange agents are located in the major cities and tourist areas (American Express, Thomas Cook). ATM machines are located at all major banks, but are sometimes limited to bank hours and may be closed on weekends. As always, be careful not to carry too much cash and keep your money in a safe place at all times. Before you go, it's a good idea to write down the customer service phone numbers and actual card numbers of your credit cards, passport, other ID, and bank cards- in the case of theft this will come in handy.
