Electricity in Russia is 220 volts, 50 cycle AC, as compared to 110 volts, 60 cycle AC in the U.S. When taking along electrical appliances, a converter and a plug adapter are needed to operate them.
Packing Tips
Spring and fall are quite pleasant, light layers and a jacket will suffice for traveling through most of Russia. Summertime can get warm, and lighter cottons and are recommended. In wintertime, plenty of warm layers are needed to brave the cold and snow. Appropriate outdoor gear is necessary, whether skiing, hiking, skating or partaking in other activities.
Passports and Visas
A valid passport is required by all foreign visitors to Russia. All visitors require a visa.
Money Matters
The currency in Russia is the rouble. Check current exchange rates before traveling. Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards, and they are widely accepted throughout the country. Changing travelers checks can be an adventure, so its best to carry a variety of payment options. Currency exchange agents are located in the major cities and tourist areas (American Express, Thomas Cook). ATM machines are located at all major banks, but may be limited to bank hours and possibly closed on weekends. Be careful not to carry too much cash and keep your money in a safe place at all times. Before you go, it's a good idea to write down the customer service phone numbers and actual card numbers of your credit cards, passport, other ID, and bank cards - in case of loss or theft this will come in handy.
