St. Michael’s Cave & the Rock of GibraltarSt. Michael’s Cave has interested visitors to Gibraltar since the days of the Romans. The Cathedral Cave was long believed to be bottomless, giving birth to the story that Gibraltar was linked to the continent of Africa by a subterranean passage 15 miles long. The cave consists of an Upper Hall with five connecting passages to a smaller hall. Beyond this, a series of narrow holes leads to a further succession of chambers reaching a depth of 250 ft below the entrance. During the Second World War, this cave was prepared as an emergency hospital, but was never used. |

Mosque of the CaliphsThe main exponent of Muslim culture is the Mosque of Caliphs, considered to be the finest Islamic church in the world. The building was begun by Abd al-Rahman I (756-785) on the site of the Christian Basilica of San Vicente. This early part consisted of eleven transverse and twelve longitudinal aisles and had a great variety of capitals and marvelous columns. For greater heights and the light to reach the whole church, the arches were open towards the inner court of Patio de las Abluciones (today Patio de los Naranjos). |
Lisbon City TourLisbon city tour includes a visit to the picturesque medieval quarter of Alfama, seeing Vasco da Gama’s tomb inside the Hieronymite Monastery and admiring the Tower of Belem on the Tagus River. |
Alhambra PalaceThe Alhambra is a true expression of the once flourishing Moorish civilization and is the finest example of its architecture in Spain. See the remains of the citadel, the so-called palace of the kings, and the quarters once used by officials. The halls and chambers surround a series of open courts, which include the Court of Lions containing arcades resting on 124 white marble columns. The interior of the building is adorned sumptuously with magnificent examples of the so-called honeycomb and stalactite vaulting; its walls and ceilings are decorated with geometric ornamentation of minute detail and intricacy, executed with surpassing skill in marble, alabaster, glazed tile, and carved plaster. |
Fatima and the Shrine of Our Lady of the RosaryVisit legendary Fatima where on May 13, 1917 the Virgin Mary is reported to have appeared to three shepherd children. You will admire the 213 foot high tower crested by a bronze crown and crystal cross and have time to enjoy this peaceful, holy place and shop for religious souvenirs. |
