Passports and Visas
Most foreign visitors to Turkey need a valid passport. However, citizens of New Zealand, Japan, South Africa and most of the countries of Western Europe, need only a valid passport for stays of up to 3 months. Australian, UK and US citizens, as well as those from Austria, Canada, Israel, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain - do need visas, obtainable in advance at a Turkish consulate, or upon entry to Turkey.
Money Matters
The currency in Turkey is the Turkish Lira (TL). Check current exchange rates before traveling. Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards, and travelers checks are widely accepted throughout the country, however cash will be easier outside the large cities, so plan accordingly. Currency exchange agents are located in the major cities and tourist areas (American Express, Thomas Cook). Traveler's are advised to take travelers checks in US Dollars. Tipping is customary in nicer restaurants, usually 10-15%. Bargaining can be done in the markets and tourist shops, as long as it's done politely.
Electricity
Throughout Turkey, most areas use 220 volts AC, 50Hz. When taking along electrical appliances, a converter and a plug adapter are needed to operate them.
Packing Tips
Turkey enjoys hot, (sometimes very hot), dry summers. Rainfall is only a factor on or near the coast. From October to April it gets quite cold. Lightweight cottons and linen during summer with warmer clothes for winter and cooler evenings are always a good bet.
