Not all areas included on this tour are accessible by motor vehicle. Visiting ancient ruins and a handful of other listed sites may require some walking, sometimes on cobblestone streets. Be sure to pack comfortable and safe walking shoes and get ready to enjoy these fascinating attractions up close and personal.

This tour requires moderate physical activity. You should be in good health, able to climb stairs and walk slightly longer distances, possibly over uneven grounds and cobblestone streets.

DAY 1 USA - Lisbon

VIP Door-to-Door Transfer to your local airport for your overnight flight to Lisbon.

DAY 2 Arrive Lisbon

Welcome to Portugal! On arrival at Lisbon Airport, your airport transfer leaves for the tour hotel at 09:30, 11:30, 13:30 & 15:30. This evening enjoy a Welcome Reception with the evening free to relax and explore.

DAY 3 Lisbon

Begin your stay with an included tour of the city, stopping at the Monument of the Discoveries, the Tower of Belem perched on the banks of the Tagus, and visiting the Hieronymite Monastery. Here we will see the tomb of Vasco da Gama. From this city many navigators set sail, and we will hear about Magellan, Dias and Henry as we tour this exciting Portuguese capital. The old Alfama district and the Liberdade tree-lined boulevard, with its beautiful mosaic sidewalks, as well as Rossio and Commerce squares are also part of our morning sightseeing. In the afternoon, plenty of time to enjoy an optional tour to the Atlantic coast, the beautiful village of Sintra and the pretty harbor of Cascais.

DAY 4 Lisbon - Fatima - Porto

After a leisurely breakfast, head to Fátima to see the shrine and Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. Continue on to Porto where we feast our eyes with the colorful buildings of Ribeira, the city’s riverside World Heritage Historic Center. Admire also the remarkable 19th and 20th century bridges across the Douro Valley and visit one of the many Port wine cellars for a tasting. The balance of the afternoon is free to explore the downtown area.

DAY 5 Porto - Salamanca

This morning we drive into Spain on the way to Salamanca, seat of one of the oldest universities in the world. Our walking sightseeing tour will take you to the Old City that has been declared a World Heritage Site, to visit Spain’s most beautiful Plaza Mayor, the New Cathedral with its amazing polychrome dome and the Old University building, where you’ll be able to admire its spectacular facade, a classroom, the cloister and its charming chapel.

DAY 6 Salamanca - Burgos - San Sebastian

On the way to the Basque Country, we drive past Tordesillas, where the Line of Demarcation was established back in the 15th century, and Valladolid, where Columbus died and was originally buried. Then, we stop in Burgos, the land of El Cid, before continuing, along the green valleys, to the beautiful city of San Sebastian, for a relaxing two night stay by the Bay of Biscay.

DAY 7 San Sebastian (Bilbao & the Guggenheim Museum)

This morning, we enjoy an excursion to nearby Bilbao where we visit the spectacular and modern Guggenheim Museum, designed by the North American architect Frank O. Gehry. The afternoon is at leisure to stroll along San Sebastian’s boardwalk or through the narrow alleys of its charming downtown area. Or maybe take an optional tour to the nearby French village of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, also known as Little Paris.

DAY 8 San Sebastian - Pamplona - Barcelona

First stop this morning is in Pamplona, the city of the running of the bulls, and perhaps take a stroll to the famous Estafeta Street. Then, we pass by the famous Rioja wine–producing region on the way to Catalonia’s capital, Barcelona, Spain’s second largest city, for a leisurely three night stay. This evening, enjoy the local fare and specialties with wine in a nearby restaurant.

DAY 9 Barcelona (Sagrada Familia & Montserrat Excursion Included)

Barcelona, host of the 1992 Olympic Games, abounds in historical sights including the magnificent Cathedral, the old Gothic Quarter plus a highlight visit to the Sagrada Familia Church. See the Columbus Monument and drive along the elegant and artistic Passeig de Gracia Boulevard during your morning tour. Then, continue to Montserrat to marvel at the dramatic peaks surrounding this peaceful place of pilgrimage. The remainder of the day is free.

DAY 10 Barcelona - Free Day

Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore Spain’s most vibrant city. Consider strolling along the famous Rambla and visiting the superb Picasso Museum and Gaudi’s Park Guell.

DAY 11 Barcelona - Valencia

This morning, we enjoy a drive along the beautiful Mediterranean coast to the Spanish orange capital, Valencia, conquered from the Moors by El Cid. Our panoramic sightseeing tour of this 2000-year old city will show us the old ramparts and gateways contrasting with Santiago Calatrava’s futuristic and spectacular architecture of the buildings of the City of Arts and Science. The rest of the afternoon is free.

DAY 12 Valencia - Madrid

Our morning drive takes us across La Mancha to Madrid, Spain’s capital city. Our afternoon sightseeing tour takes us to view the Royal Palace, Puerta del Sol and Plaza de España with its monument to Cervantes, the writer of Don Quixote. Then, on to a highlight visit to the palatial Prado Museum, one of the world’s greatest art galleries with works by El Greco, Velazquez, Goya and Italian and Dutch masters.

DAY 13 Madrid - Free Day

Enjoy your last day in Madrid at leisure to explore this cosmopolitan city or consider taking an optional tour to Toledo, Spain’s old capital. Tonight, we say our goodbyes to our newfound friends during an included Highlight Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant.

DAY 14 Madrid - USA

We bid farewell to Madrid as we are transferred to the airport for our return flight home. Departure transfers arrive at Madrid Airport at 07:00, 09:00 & 11:00.
