Traveler Q&A: Exploring Peru & the Galapagos Islands

Traveler Q&A: Exploring Peru & the Galapagos Islands

GET Travelers Greg and Mary share their experiences on Highlights of Peru, with an exciting post-trip extension to the Galapagos Islands.

Why did you choose this trip?

My husband, Greg, loves history and I’m a retired science teacher.  So Peru was for him and the Galapagos for me.  However, we both enjoyed the entire trip much more than we ever imagined we would.

What was the most impressive part of your journey?

It’s impossible for us to single out just one part of the trip.  The entire journey far exceeded our expectations and we were blown away every day.

Tell us about your experience visiting Machu Picchu.

It was a surreal experience to finally visit a place that we so often see pictured.  Our Travel Director and naturalist made history come alive for us.  We avoided the crowds by visiting Machu Picchu in the afternoon when there were few people.  And the entire experience was recorded on video for us.

What did you enjoy most about the Galapagos Islands?

We enjoyed seeing all of the unique animals – it was the highlight of our 4-night cruise to the Galapagos.  The animals didn’t show any fear of people so you could get very close to them for some great photography.

What were some other highlights?

We enjoyed the daily opportunity to snorkel and see the marine animals in their natural habitat.

Tell us about the locals you met on your trip.

The countryside residents are very friendly and love tourists.  The children in Peru are wonderful — always smiling and willing perform for you, hoping for a coin in return.

How did you spend your free time?

We would find a good place for lunch, browse the shops, and people watch in the Plaza.

Describe a favorite moment from your vacation.

On our last evening in Lima, we toured an exhibit of pre-Columbian art and then enjoyed a delicious farewell dinner with our traveling companions inside the Larco Museum. It was a spectacular way to end our week in Peru!

Anything travelers should know before taking this trip?

Don’t let fear of altitude sickness or sea sickness prevent you from taking this trip.  They’re not a problem and everyone in our group felt great throughout.
