Service rating : I feel like it's a complicated procedure to plan for 12 days in Italy, and wanted to go with a tour company that would handle ALL the arrangements and take the guesswork out of it for me! Your company did just that...and did it very well! And....out Travel Director, Gianmarco was absolutely amazing. Fun, patient, knowledgeable, organized. He made this experience exceptional!!

Service rating : Every aspect of my trip was amazing from initial scheduling until I arrived home after my trip. I have received Grand European Tour catalogs for 30 years and from my first catalog, I put the "Best of Italy" tour on my "bucket list." In reality, I never thought I would be able to go because, by the time I could afford it, I assumed the rising cost of travel through the years would make it cost prohibitive. But, that is not the case with this fabulous company. Even though prices have risen some over 30 years, Grand European Tours and their affiliated companies (Trafalgar) have kept prices reasonable, so the average person can afford to fulfill their dreams of travel. From the minute I stepped off the plane in Rome for my 14 day adventure of discovering Italy, everything ran like a well oiled machine. Giuseppe Spada was our Travel Director for the entire trip and made the trip seamless for all 48 of us. Our driver was Antonio Falso and he drove our bus through all of Italy as a seasoned professional. This trip was well worth the 30 year wait, and I encourage anyone wanting to tour the world, to make Grand European Tours your first and only tour company.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Kathleen, thank you very much for your lovely review. We are absolutely delighted we could make your travel dreams come true, and that you had a wonderful time on our Best of Italy vacation. Enjoy those memories and we hope to see you on another trip soon!

Service rating : It was a well planned and well executed tour. Our director did an excellent job of keeping us on schedule. Her sense of timing was excellent. When one of our hotels fell thru and we had to move to another one, she was honest and clear about what happened and how the problem would be rectified, including what we considered a generous offering of 2excursions at no additional charge. The driver was skilled and a really good sport.
Vacation : The tour was jam packed with interesting and significant excursions. Based on what we’ve paid for other trips, I’d rate this on excellent value for the money. It was a large group with one 4 yr old and on handicapped person, but the large group was well managed by out director.

Service rating : Our tour director Franco Falanga and our driver Alfredo made this experience very enjoyable. Franco was organized, efficient, experienced and had a relaxed, fun personality. Our hotels were not all 4 Star rated because many were older and had need of updating. But the rooms were large and all had showers. The dinners in the hotels, although convenient were not up to the high level of the special dinner outings. We signed up for all of the extra excursions and the tour guides were excellent. We enjoyed having the opportunity on some occasions to dine in local restaurants on our own and in smaller groups. We would have preferred more than one tour guide for our large (50) member walking tours for the sake of safety and efficiency. I don't think Franco expected most all of us to sign up for everything. You will spend long hours on the coach and will eat lunch at Italian style truck stops (which are amazing). Weather conditions kept us from the Isle of Capri, but they gave us an extra guided tour in Venice to make up for it. This tour far exceeded our expectations because the of the sparkling new coach, the number of incredible places we saw along with the education we received from Franco and our tour guides. This was a trip of a lifetime for us and we highly recommend it! Dress comfortably because you will be spending most of your days walking 3-5 miles and saying "Ahhh".

Service rating : This is the first time using Trafalgar and I must say I was very impressed! the tour director (Pamela Russo) was the best, she is a very organized and she has the right personality for this job and knows how to communicate with the group. she was very knowledgeable with Italy. I was also impressed with Vieto the bus driver.I have booked this tour again and it leaves on May 19, 2018. I know that it is 8 months out but it would be great to have Pamela the director of this tour, so if you could forward this request to the right people that schedule the tours maybe they can arrange this. I have been telling everybody about how impressed I was and that I am going again, this time with my partner who could not go the last time. looking forward to another great time!!!

Food at the hotels was so so. The people in our group were great. For my wife and I, the trip was too long and we were given to much information by the guides. I forgot most of what the said already. If we had realized that 2 weeks was too long, we would not have booked the trip. GET did your job. I have no complaints about you.

Service rating : Yes, we would recommend Grand European Travel to anyone thinking about taking a tour of Italy as we did on September 4,2017. We were to travel until the 17th of September, but my husband got sick on the 13th and was taken to a hospital about an hour from the hotel we were staying at in Lake Como. He spent 5 days in that hospital with Congestive Heart Failure. We missed then end of the tour. I was in touch with Grand European Travel and they helped me to make reservations for the flight home from the airport in Milan and also book a hotel there for the night before our departure on the 19th. Our travel director, Pino Campi was excellent. He called me and checked up daily on how we were both doing after leaving the tour, and even sent emails after we got home to see how everything was going. Everyone went above and beyond in helping me during this stressful time. It was a challenge being in a foreign country and not speaking Italian. Everyone I spoke to were very professional and concerned and helpful with everything I needed. I can't thank them enough for all they did for us.

Service rating : Trafalgar lived up to their name! The hotels were top-notch 4-5 stars. We saw so much and moved so fast that it was almost a blur. I can't say enough about our tour director, Alissa, who was tireless, friendly to all, very professional, and knowledgeable. Her most valuable and appreciated service to all of us was her kindness and genuine caring about each one. That kind of personality that makes you want to travel again with her as director. Her finding me the right plug-in, so I could charge my phone as well as use my oxygen was a godsend, since the plug that Trafalgar sent didn't work! All of the specialists at the main exhibits were good, except for the Vatican guide who was rude, showed visible and verbal irritation at some of us that were trying to keep up, which was difficult with over 40 people. The Pompeii guide did not give us nearly the information and/or stories that I'd heard before on previous trips. My favorite hotels were the hotel at Sorrento, Johanna Park, and Grand Albergo Austria in Venice. I have found "comfortable, homey with friendly staff" to always be my favorites. My husband and I loved the Sorrento Farmhouse dinner and learned what good mozzarella cheese really was! We enjoyed the cruise and dinner at Burano. The cruises and dinner in the Italian lakes was wonderful. One of our last dinners at the Tuscan vineyard was past amazing and memorable. This was my husband's and my first tour, and I'm glad we went with the best! You get what you pay for....
Vacation : The glass making in Venice was fascinating. I bought lovely necklaces, earring and my favorite, cobalt blue glasses with gold inlays.

I would only use trafalga in the future and would look for the same travel director.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thanks for your comments on our Best of Italy trip.  We're glad to hear Franco made such a positive impact on your vacation.

Service rating : I would definitely book through Grand European again. I liked the BOGO option for the flights, the trip offerings are great and teaming up with Trafalgar became a perfect travel experience.
Vacation : This tour by Trafalgar is perfect to see and experience the BEST OF ITALY! Our Tour Director (Franco) was an expert director with years of experience and knowledge. His tour was so well organized; no lines to wait in, even when touring the optional excursions; treated us like family (Franco Family) and he provided professional advice and service for all of us. Our beautiful brand new motor coach and expert driver made the ride comfortable and enjoyable!

Service rating : There were 47 people on this trip. Group was too large. Have been on many trips and average was 38. I was shocked to see so many and will use other travel companies with tour limits in the future. Travel director did a great job but it was not easy moving around so many people.
Vacation : Too many people on tour. Also the included meals in our hotel were the same every time. Got really tired of 2 slices of pork with gravy and roasted potatoes for entrees.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Italy must have a current passport that is valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering Italy.

  • The currency in Italy is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some euros for when you first arrive in Italy, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate when you arrive in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Italy. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • While Italy is most famous for pizza and pasta, few travelers are aware of just how varied the country’s culinary offering actually are. In fact, each of the 20 regions has its own distinctive cuisine. Traditionally, lunch (pranzo) is the most substantial meal of the day. A full meal consists of antipasto (starter), a primo piatto (pasta, rice or soup), a secondo piatto (meat or fish) with a side, or contorno (vegetable or salad), then frutta (fresh fruit). Finish with espresso and maybe a limoncello or grappa.  Wine is usually served with the meal, accompanied by mineral water. Tap water is safe to drink, but not always tasty. We recommend you buy bottled mineral water. ‘Acqua non potabile’ means the water is not safe to drink.  Find out about some local specialties to try in Italy’s top destinations below.

    Florence

Food in Florence is simple and humble, and relies on the fresh ingredients of the surrounding Tuscan countryside. Many of the local recipes have evolved from peasant dishes to international favorites. Bread is an important staple in Florentine cooking, and is featured in everything from antipasti (appetizers) such as bruschetta to traditional main dishes. Panzanella is a popular summer salad prepared with day old crusty bread and tomatoes.  Papa al pomodoro is a delicious soup made with bread, tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, and herbs.  You’ll also find a variety of dishes featuring white beans, including the hearty ribollita soup.  But the flagship of Florentine cuisine remains the famous bistecca alla fiorentina (T-bone steak).  For a sweet finish, meals are topped off with traditional cantuccini (almond cookies) and the local vin santo dessert wine.

    Venice

A visit to Venice offers an opportunity to discover a variety of truly unique gastronomic traditions.  Venetians have a long-standing tradition of eating cicchetti, small bites similar to Spanish tapas. You can enjoy a variety of these before lunch or dinner, paired with a glass of local wine at restaurants and bars around town. Other common dishes include polenta, risotto with peas, salted cod, sardines, and local bigoli pasta.

    Rome

Roman cuisine is deeply rooted in the past. Despite the city’s imperial history, the food in Rome and the surrounding Lazio region is anything but refined.  Humble pasta dishes such as carbonara, amatriciana, aglio e olio (garlic and olive oil) and cacio e peppe (pecorino cheese and pepper) are local favorites served in trattorias around town. Other foods to try in Rome include pizza, a variety of fritti (fritters) made with everything from salted cod to zucchini flours, stewed oxtail, suppli (rice and Bolognese sauce croquettes) and sharp pecorino cheese. For dessert, try crostata di ricotta (Italian cheesecake) or zeppole (donuts).

  • In Italy, the weather changes very quickly, with temperatures varying from morning to night. We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • At bars and restaurants, tipping is less common or generous as in the U.S. When dining out, it’s appropriate, although not required, to leave an extra euro or two for your waiter.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity. We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 48 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.

Optional Experiences are subject to change. Your Travel Director will supply you with a final list of Optional Experiences available on your trip. Optional Experiences cannot be booked online; they can be purchased during your trip through your Travel Director.
