Overview

Let the melancholic trill of the Fado Guitar follow you from Portugal's Manueline Lisbon to Baroque Oporto and the sun-soaked beaches of Vilamoura. Wander through the medieval cities of Obidos, Évora and Guimarães, and visit the religious landmarks of Fatima, Batalha and the dramatic Hieronymite Monastery, enjoying a delicious pasteis de nata or two along the way.

  1. Bem vindo a Lisboa. On arrival at Lisbon Airport transfers will operate at 9.30 am, 12.30 pm and 3.30 pm. Guests arriving later should make their own way to the hotel. A sea of pastel pinks, yellows and blues dot the seven hills of the romantic Portuguese capital, which you will have an opportunity to explore today before meeting your fellow travelers and Travel Director for a Welcome Reception and orientation drive past the city's most iconic sights.

    hotel:Turim Av Liberdade
  2. Delve into Lisbon's centuries-old seafaring heritage today, paying tribute to the brave men who set off from these shores to discover a new world. We'll see the shimmering white Monument to the Discoveries, the iconic suspension bridge spanning the River Tagus, Belém Tower, built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's expedition. We join a Local Specialist for a sightseeing tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Hieronymite Monastery, an exquisite testament to 15th century Manueline architecture and art. Join an Optional Experience to the historic towns of Cascais and Queluz or enjoy a traditional Portuguese dinner amidst the heart-wrenching, melancholic sounds of the fado.
    meal(s):BB
  3. We journey across the Tagus this morning and drive south towards the Serra de Arrábida Mountains and to the golden pastures of the Alentejo. The hearty aroma of Portuguese chicken fills the air as we share a traditional Be My Guest lunch with the owners of a stud ranch where Lusitano horses were reared at the pleasure of King João VI in the 18th century. Meandering further south, we arrive on the sun-kissed shores of the Algarve – our home for the next two nights.
    meal(s):BB, BG
    hotel:Agua Riverside
  4. The dramatic cliffs and beautiful beaches of the Sagres Peninsula, at the very edge of Portugal, provides a stunning backdrop for our morning coastal drive. Admire spectacular views across Baleeira Beach before continuing along the coast to Cape St. Vincent, the site of many sea battles centuries ago. We end our excursion with a visit to the resort town of Lagos – once the home of Henry the Navigator.
    meal(s):BB
  5. Meandering north, we travel across the Serra de Caldeirão to the ancient Alentejo city of Évora. Join your Local Specialist and visit the elaborate cathedral, Roman temple and the Chapel of Bones. Spend the rest of our day delving into the medieval history of this enchanting city. Spend the rest of the afternoon strolling through the historic center of Oporto. This evening we enjoy a memorable dinner together.

    meal(s):BB, DW
  9. Soak up the grand atmosphere of one of Europe's greatest and oldest universities and meander through the ancient streets and squares of Coimbra this morning, before journeying to the Templar city of Tomar to visit the Convent of Christ, originally built as a Templar stronghold in the 12th century. • U.S. citizens traveling to Portugal must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Portugal.

  • The currency in Portugal is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Portugal. We recommend bringing a credit card for purchases and informing your financial institutions of your travel plans before leaving home to avoid having your purchases flagged as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • With Portugal’s long coastline, seafood is featured prominently on their menus. Popular dishes include sopa de mariscos (a shellfish soup) and bacalhau (dried codfish), and Portuguese grilled chicken prepared with chili, garlic and olive oil. For dessert, don’t miss out on the famous pastéis de nata custard pastry or arroz dolce (rice pudding) and a glass of port wine.

  • Portugal has a temperate marine climate with hot summers and wet winters. We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping is less common in Portugal than in the U.S. When dining out, it’s appropriate, although not required, to leave an extra euro or two or up to 5-10 percent for great service. Leave your tip on the table rather than adding it to your credit card slip to ensure that your waiter receives it.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.

Service rating : From the very first phone call to book the trip, everything was handled - the airline reservations, the travel reservations, everything. We could just relax and enjoy the trip without having to worry about all the important details.
Response from Grand European Travel:

Vacation : Perfect itinerary. I feel like we really did see the best of Portugal. I knew little about the country and feel like we got such a wonderful perspective - seeing so many different parts of the country. The weather was fantastic. I had not expected that there would be so many hills, steps, and cobblestones - but I did it.

Service rating : Very good...answered all questions and readily available when booking. However, the group was way too large...48! It was difficult for us to stay together with the local tour guide. Also, we would have liked to have more free time in the small towns. Because of the optional experiences,, we often had to leave too soon in order to get to the hotels.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We understand that during the peak travel months, the group sizes can get on the large side. We are happy that our trips are full to capacity, but we understand the challenges that presents. We will share this feedback with our Operations and Quality Control teams for further review. Thank you.

Service rating : The tour guide was excellent. The places we visited were well worth it. I especially enjoyed the trip to Fatima on the 100th anniversary of the last appearance of Mary to the shepherd children. It was truly a cultural event. The bus was comfortable and the driver was excellent. The hotel accommodations were quite satisfactory.
Vacation : Very affordable. The GET Rep was very helpful. I highly recommend a trip to Portugal.

Service rating : When I have traveled with Grand European before the groups were much smaller. This group of 50 was far too many to offer a quality experience. It was impossible to even develop meaningful relationships with fellow travelers. This was not what I expected from Grand European.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We're very sorry to see that you were disappointed.  The size of the groups can vary from 35 to 52 guests depending on the destination and the operator.  The Best of Portugal was one of the most popular trips we sold this year so the size of the groups were all near capacity. We hope that you were able to enjoy the other aspects of the trip and thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Vacation : A group of 50 is too many in order to give a quality experience. It doesn't allow for quality relationships to be had. It also makes it difficult to follow and understand the tour guide and other expert presenters.

Service rating : Without reservation, I would recommend the GET trip I have recently completed. The choice of tour director was inspired. Rafael Moreno's skill is unparalleled. The itinerary allowed our group to see far beyond the capital city of Lisbon and the Douro Valley. Many personal touches by Sr. Moreno, like a special Fado performance with an introduction by a renown guitar master, and a visit to a cork factory with a professor who explained the production process, as well as a boat cruise along the exotic coastline of the Algarve enriched the entire experience as did the musical selections during the long coach rides.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you so much for your lovely review and recommendation.  We will see you on your next trip!

Service rating : We have traveled with GET 3 times now. They make sure you are cared for, have a good itinerary and we can leave the driving to them.. There are things I would prefer to be corrected but why talk about the bad at this point.
Vacation : Traveled with Trafalgar instead of GET and the standards were not the same. Lots of cut backs.. Our guide was excellent. But hotels were not the same as in the past, etc.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you for honest review.  GET has not operated their own tours for over 3 years now and we sell our sister brands, Insight Vacations and Trafalgar Tours and Uniworld River Cruises exclusively.  While every trip and destination is different, we are sorry to see that this trip didn't meet your expectations.
