Spain has a diverse climate due to its size and geographical variations. In general, the country experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. Coastal regions, such as Barcelona and Valencia, enjoy mild winters and hot summers with temperatures reaching 30°C (86°F) or higher. Inland areas, like Madrid, have a more extreme climate, with hot summers and cold winters, sometimes dropping below freezing. The northern regions, such as Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela, have a maritime climate with cooler summers and mild, rainy winters.

Portugal has a Mediterranean climate, with mild, rainy winters and warm, dry summers. The coastal areas experience cooler temperatures compared to the inland regions. Summers are typically hot, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C, while winters are mild, averaging around 10°C to 15°C. The southern region, particularly the Algarve, tends to be hotter and drier, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 40°C during heatwaves.

On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits

Luggage: Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb

Carry-On Bag: *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”

  • *Please note: A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage.

So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances.

Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.

Packing Tips for Your Tour

Packing for a guided tour will vary depending on the duration of the trip, the time of year, and the activities planned. Here is a general packing list to help you get started:

Passport and Travel Documents: Ensure you have your passport, travel insurance, and any necessary travel documents.

Clothing:

  • Comfortable walking shoes: Cobblestone streets and uneven terrain require comfortable footwear.
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing: Pack clothes suitable for the season. Bring a mix of short-sleeved tops, lightweight pants or skirts, and a few long-sleeved options for cooler evenings for the summer months, and long-sleeved and heavier layers for early Spring, Fall, and Winter.
  • Layers: It's advisable to bring a light jacket or sweater and a scarf for layering, especially in Spring or Fall.
  • Nice evening wear: You may wish to wear a dressier outfit if you plan on dining in an elegant restaurant, for example. Smart-casual clothes are usually acceptable for all included daytime and evening activities throughout your tour.
  • Rain Gear: Depending on the season and the countries you're visiting, it's a good idea to pack a compact rain jacket or umbrella.

Sun Protection:

  • Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
  • Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly.

Medications and First Aid:

  • Any prescription medications you need. (See more below under Health & Wellness)
  • Basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, etc.

Toiletries:

  • Travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
  • Travel towel (quick-drying and compact).
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
  • A washcloth and carry bag (often not available in hotels abroad).

Electronics:

  • A camera: You’re traveling to see extraordinary scenery and sites. So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Check out our travel photography tips for capturing the best photos of your trips. If you feel comfortable, you can also try the camera on your phone. However, if you want to zoom in or capture moving objects, a camera might be your best bet.
  • Mobile phone.
  • Chargers for each electronic you bring.
  • Travel adapter and/or voltage converter
  • Portable power bank for charging devices on the go.
  • Small travel hair dryer (make sure you have the correct converter and adapter).

Miscellaneous:

  • A travel-friendly daypack or bag to carry your essentials during excursions.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Reusable water bottle. At GET, we’re all about caring for our planet, and with that in mind, we always recommend that you pack a reusable water bottle for your trip. Bringing your own reusable water bottle or asking for tap water at restaurants means you can make a difference by reducing your vacation plastic waste.
  • A small travel alarm.
  • A travel iron if you like your clothes to be pressed.
  • A travel pillow.

Optional:

  • Scarf or shawl for visiting religious sites or to cover up in conservative areas.
  • Light sleepwear.
  • A new, blank journal to document your trip. Don't know your travel journal style? Find out here!
  • Ziplock bags (storing snacks, toiletries, and keeping things organized).

Remember to pack light and versatile items that can be mixed and matched for different outfits. Laundry facilities are often available, or you can have your clothes laundered at hotels during your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a small bag or backpack to bring on the coach for day trips and excursions, leaving your larger luggage at the hotel.

Electricity

American appliances run on 110-120 volts at 60 Hz, while European appliances run on 220-230 volts at 50 Hz.

As a result, American appliances designed for use in the United States (typically 120 volts at 60 Hz) may not be directly compatible with the higher voltage used in European countries. Plugging a 120-volt appliance into a 220-240-volt outlet without the appropriate voltage converter or transformer can cause damage to the appliance or pose safety risks.

If you plan to bring American appliances to Europe, you will need a voltage converter or transformer to change the voltage to 220-240 volts from 110 volts. Additionally, you will likely need a plug adapter to fit the American-style plug into the European power outlets. All of Europe operates on the same two round-pronged outlets (Type C).

It's important to note that not all appliances are compatible with voltage converters, so it's essential to check the labels or user manuals of your devices before using them with a voltage converter. Some electronic devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and camera chargers, are dual voltage and can support 120V and 220-240V, so they may not require a voltage converter, but a plug adapter will still be necessary.

To avoid any issues with electrical compatibility during your travels, consider purchasing appliances specifically designed for the voltage used in the region you'll be visiting or use appropriate voltage converters and plug adapters to ensure the safe operation of your American appliances in Europe.

We recommend purchasing an adapter with a voltage converter so you can pack less. And to pick up any necessary adapters or converters for your electronic devices before departing on your guided tour and bringing them with you.

Hair Dryers in Your Hotel

Hair dryers are common accessories in hotels. Should you want to bring your own, though, you will need to bring an adapter and voltage converter or make sure it is dual voltage by checking the label for INPUT AC 120V - 240V or a switch that can be set to 125V or 250V. Many devices have this feature, so it's worth checking before you travel. If you need a hair dryer during your trip but can't find one in your hotel room, you can inquire with the hotel staff. Many hotels will be able to provide a hair dryer upon request, either at the front desk or through housekeeping.

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is commonly available in European hotels, restaurants, and public spaces, especially in major cities and tourist areas, but it is worth noting that the settings will differ from what you are used to in the USA.

However, it's important to note that not all accommodations or historic buildings may have air conditioning, particularly in more traditional or rural settings. Most hotels in Europe can provide a portable fan for additional room cooling if requested. Your Travel Director will be on hand to assist you throughout your trip.

Traveling by coach

Our modern air-conditioned coaches have been selected with your comfort in mind. Your Travel Director will familiarize you with all the onboard features, including a washroom fitted for your convenience and comfort. Regular stops are made to stretch your legs, take refreshments, fill up your water bottles, and use the facilities.

Airport transfers

Airport transfers to and from the airport on the first and last days of your tour are complimentary only if you are traveling on a tour operated by Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, or Luxury Gold, and your flight times coincide with the shuttle-coach transfer timings. Learn more about Airport Transfers here.

To enable you to personalize your tour experience, you will find a number of Optional Experiences designed to complement the itinerary. These are designed to offer a deeper insight into the culture and character of the areas to be visited and provide some wonderful highlights to your travels. The optional program is designed to let you experience more of what interests you and to get the most from your vacation without replacing or overlapping with anything included in an itinerary.

The majority of Optional Experiences will be offered to you by your Travel Director at the beginning of your trip. Some may be subject to change, depending on the time you are traveling or local circumstances, including weather and days of the week. Your Travel Director will provide further information.

Usually, most Optional Experiences will be priced in the local currency, but please read through the details of individual optional experiences for specific information. Exact payment options will be advised locally by your Travel Director/Local Representative for each Optional Experience, but in many cases, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are all accepted.

It is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses while abroad.

In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack a plentiful supply of any medication you may need while on vacation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications.

Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.

It's essential to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling to any destination. Routine vaccinations may include vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and influenza.

When traveling with GET, baggage handling at hotels, service charges, and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals) will all be taken care of by your Travel Director. There are, however, a few instances where individual tipping is welcome.

Local Specialists

It is customary to show appreciation for the insights, stories, and know-how shared with you by the Local Specialists, and we suggest a gratuity equivalent to $1.00-$2.00 USD per person per half day.

Your Coach Driver and Travel Director

The trip cost does not include gratuities for your Travel Director and Driver. At the end of your trip, you may express appreciation to your Travel Director and Driver for their excellent service and the personal attention you received. Gratuities are given at the discretion of each guest, and a suggested amount per person/per day is listed in your travel documents.

For your convenience and ease, there is an option to pre-pay gratuities for the Travel Director and Driver at the time of booking.

Hotel services

It is customary to tip hotel staff for room service delivery if the charge has not already been added to the bill. Where ice machines are not available, and you receive ice from the bar, a small tip to the bartender is always appreciated.

I told them I didn’t want to think or arrange anything. Wanted to stay an extra day at each end of the tour. They made Everything happen. There was a transfer man who met us at the airport & went straight to the hotel. He was delight on the ride! Same with after the end of trip. Met at hotel & right to the airport. Before the trip GET kept us up to date. Then the Insight Tour introduced themselves. A very smooth transitions. We Will be traveling with them again.

Our driver Joao made the riding trip so smooth & safe. For a 2 week trip, there was never a nose or hand smudge on the windows. The bus was pristine every day we got on. Brad our tour guide made a great trip exceptional. The history, back stories, political intrigue was all given in the way famous USA newsman Walter Cronkite used to do. Very professional. But even better was his humor & personal stories. What a hoot. He always surprised us with local treats & mementos from the areas we were at. Such nice seeet touches!!

Overall good. Once we selected our trip, finalized and paid for the entire amount then we were told we have to pay additional $ for airlines fuel charges. When you engage in a contract, agree to a price and pay in full, it does not make sense to come back and ask for more money (for either Airlines or GET). Moe Tabrizi
Response from Grand European Travel:
That is correct. Airline fuel charges are subject to change until your airfare is paid in full. Prior to the day you called to make your final payment, there had been a small increase in those charges, but not after. We apologize for your frustration with this policy and the unavoidable traffic on your arrival into Madrid.

1-A couple started coughing on the tour bus. Had they wear a face mask, it could have saved almost half the people on the tour from getting sick (including myself). The tour director should provide that kind of reminder. 2- The day we arrived in Madrid and picked up from the airport to go to the hotel, the downtown/center of the city was closed by the police due to public celebration/demonstration. Our bus driver did his best to negotiate with the police to get us to the hotel with no luck while he was informing the tour director by phone. Police was not allowing large bus to get through but taxis and small van could drive through. After nearly 5 hours of driving around circle/town, we were transferred to small van to get to the hotel. That decision by the tour director should have been made hours earlier. We wasted 4-5 hours and finally got to the hotel exhausted.

When we called up, it was for an earlier time which was full. She said she would look into getting us on the trip but we might have to go on the next one, but she would get back to us. True to her word she called a few days later. That one was full and we took the next one in October. The weather turned out to be great and we had a wonderful time. Our only complaint is the return flight back was at 6:10 am. The shuttles started at 6:30 so we had to pay for a taxi. It's unclear why we had such an early flight. When we received our flight info we didn't see any shuttle times. That came at the end. Also, the airline changed the plane from the layover to our final destination which resulted in many people being displaced of their seats. We paid for Premium Economy but had to sit in Economy. The airline says those impacted are entitled to a refund and some compensation BUT only through the people who set up the trip(GET). That has yet to happen. I might have a different opinion later.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We are sorry to hear about your trouble with your flights. This has been a challenging season for air travel with everyone flying to Europe. We will check on that refund for you and follow up by email. We are glad you enjoyed your trip and thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

It was amazing to see things I've only heard about. We always take the optional dinner excursions in a country where we don't know the language and since I do have one food problem it's so much easier when the tour guide explains what I can't have. We like to see everything we can but have no way on our own to get to them. Some of the excursions were a waste of our money while others took too long thus impacting lunch vs shopping or just being able to calmly enjoying the scenery before it was time to leave, thus the four stars instead of five. The local tour guides were so knowledgeable and really helped us to understand the area

I worked with several different travel specialists, and it was disappointing across the board. The reps were dismissive, talked over me and basically acted like they were doing me a favor to even answer the phone. Answers to my questions were short/cryptic and abrupt. The experience of planning and booking the trip was so stressful that I almost didn't do it. The shocking part is that I am a repeat customer that has spent thousands and thousands of dollars with GET. I will be researching other tour providers for future family vacations.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We always aim to deliver great service, and we are terribly sorry to hear when we don’t meet expectations. Thanks for taking the time to bring this to our attention. We will use the feedback to make us better and to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

I think the trip was well planned as well as travel cities and sites. We missed one key landmark, which was really troublesome, but I need to research what we were told before I comment further about that. Our driver was excellent. Excursions were great but over priced. Tour director was knowledgeable but not someone I would travel with again.

Customer service was OK but we found a lot of problems with Tess, who was not very communicative and ended up that she gave us wrong information. If I had known that the hotel rooms were small with two twin beds side-by-side, I would not have chosen to have a roommate for this trip. My roommate has car sickness but was told she would be allowed to sit up front. She was not and ended up taking medication that made her sleepy throughout the trip. I wish she had the right info up front. Also, it was difficult to get ahold of Tess to get information. Overall, not happy. Also on trip, learned if we had gone with AAA we would have received vouchers for excursions. I bought my airfare through GET and it cost over $3000. Going out to Spain, I had a lovely flight on British Airlines to Heathrow and onto Madrid. Everything was perfect. However, the flights for my return trip were changed and we were put on JetBlue Mint from JFK to Seattle. The American Airlines flight from Barcelona to JFK went fine. But the JetBlue Mint was horrible. First off I was not allowed by TSA to go through TSA pre-check in JFK because my boarding pass that I received in Barcelona did not have TSA preapproval stamped on the JFK to Seattle ticket. There was no desk from JetBlue to assist me with the problem And the American Airlines agents in the terminal could not help me.. I would’ve had to take a shuttle from the American Airlines terminal to the JetBlue terminal in order to get TSA preapproval stamped on my ticket so I could go through the TSA preapproval line. (Jet Blue Mint is supposed offer priority security which I was denied.) Once I got through security at JFK which took one hour, I went to gate 13 where I got on the bus that then took me to the JetBlue terminal. The airplane that we flew from JFK to Seattle was a 737 in first class. Our seats were row five and we were right up against the toilet for the back section of the airplane. In addition to the smell and the constant sound of the flushing toilet, the accommodations seat wise on that plane were about a quarter smaller than what was on the 777 we flew from Barcelona to JFK. Once we were in the air, I had severe body pains, and the crew was very accommodating and helpful, but I was also extremely claustrophobic in the seat, which was uncomfortable because it was so small. In the upright position, the seat was not even long enough to support my legs when I sat upright. I am so upset with the accommodations of this plane for a five hour flight. I was promised an American Airlines flight from Heathrow to Seattle when I purchased the ticket and the flight was changed by the airline according to the GET representative who said they could not help me when I contacted them the day before the flight. The accommodations are not equal and was quite unpleasant. I am very disappointed in this especially with the cost of airfare fare.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you for your honest feedback and we apologize that your return flights were changed by the airline due to operational issues which have been plaguing many airlines this summer. Luckily, American was able to accommodate you in Business/First class on Jet Blue which is what your original ticket was for. We have noted your comments about the pacing of the tour and hotel room size and quality and will share them the Operator's Quality Control team. Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention.

Vacation
I found this trip to be extremely rigorous and inflexible. The pace was very difficult to keep up with, and was exhausting. The bus was brand new, and we were told when we got on the bus that if we use the toilet on board that would stay with us for the rest of the trip, which was very discouraging for using. We saw many things, and saw them at a very quick rate without any time to even visit the store and buy postcards. At the end of the trip, I found myself exhausted. I did not like most of the hotel rooms, and I did not like most of the food. At the restaurant, we went to for seafood on the Targus River, I looked at what I was served, compared to what the people in the restaurant were served and felt that the food I received was not as good quality. The group meals were not always very good. I did enjoy the village experience,, and I also enjoyed the paella. I wish I knew the timeline of the excursions when I signed up and I probably would not have signed up for as many. if you did the excursions, you really did not have enough time to recover from all the activities that you were doing. I had an issue with the tour Director about the bathroom. It was embarrassing that I had to ask permission to use the bathroom and was told that if I went, it would delay everyone else on the trip by 15 minutes. Also, the tour Director reportedly told people on the bus that everyone would have to wait 15 minutes because I had to go to the bathroom. I felt this was unprofessional, and I also feel that the tour Director never discussed this issue with me afterwards to resolve it. I’d like to add that I had to go to the bathroom after an hour bus trip and going through immigration at Gibraltar and there were no toilets available for me to use during that time as I have been discouraged from using the toilet on board the bus earlier in the trip. I also did not like the accommodations. The hotel rooms were very small and two twin beds in each room were pushed up against each other not giving two people enough room. Even the bathrooms had sliding doors made of glass making privacy difficult. If I had known this in advance I would not have had a roommate. While the breakfasts had plenty to offer, I did not find enough time in the morning to be able to eat. In one situation, the restaurant was not opened in a reasonable amount of time when we had to leave at 7:45 AM. I’ve never taken a bus tour before. It is true that we got to see a lot, but at the same time we didn’t get to see a lot of the cities that we stayed in. I would’ve liked to of been able to spend more time in Valencia for example. Most of the excursions were long bus drives away from the cities that we were staying in. When we did go into the big cities, we were staying in hotels that were accommodating many other tour buses. This created a burden on the flow of services by the hotels and restaurants. For example, in one hotel’s restaurant, with about six or seven different tour groups, and it took 20 minutes to get food In a Buffet! Elevators would take 10 to 15 minutes. Last hotel we stayed at was a Malia in Barcelona. It had a jetted tub. When I use the jetted tub, all this black hook came out of the nozzles and floated to the top of the bath water. It was disgusting. This was not a four-star experience. Will not be back and cannot recommend.

Service
Worst service ever. Information inly sent to one person. Impossible to reach Tess by phone,. No answers to questions. All the invoices lumped together. The whole experience was beyond ridiculous and frustrating. I wouldn't recommend GET to anyone.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We do apologize for your frustration with our invoicing and documents process. When several people book together it can get very confusing. We appreciate your comments and will work to make this more user friendly for our guests traveling in a group.

Vacation
Insight did a great job even though GET had never told them about me being a vegetarian and having severe motion sickness. I will book directly with Insight in the future. GET was useless.
