Overview

Step back in time and immerse yourself in idyllic 17th century Dutch landscapes of gently turning windmills and charming bridges, arching over peaceful canals. Enjoy a slower pace of life with all the comforts of modern touches.

  1. Airport transfers depart Brussels Airport for your centrally-located hotel at 09:00, 11:00 & 14:30. After checking in, the afternoon is yours to relax. Later, join your Tour Director for a visit to the cheeky Manneken Pis statue and leisurely stroll around the Grand Place, voted the most beautiful square in Europe. Your delightful introductory evening also includes a Welcome Reception with drinks and an opportunity to mingle over dinner with wine.

    meal(s):DW
    hotel:NH Collection (2 nights).
  2. Admire the contrast of the Chinese and Japanese Pavilions and the impressive, metallic spheres of the Atomium. Leaving the city limits behind, visit the battlefield of Waterloo to learn about Napoleon's final defeat in 1815. Immerse yourself in the action at the Panorama, where a huge 360⁰ mural depicts a key moment in the raging battle. If you're feeling energetic, you can climb the 230 steps to the top of the Lion's Mound for panoramic views over the battlefield and countryside. Back in Brussels, the remainder of the day is at leisure. Maybe try some Belgian Stoemp with a ‘Kwak' at dinner?

    meal(s):BB
    hotel:NH Collection
  3. Cross the pasture lands of Belgian Flanders to your next stop in Ghent, the ‘City of Flowers' and rival to Bruges for its rich treasury of medieval heritage. With a Local Expert, visit St. Bavo's Cathedral with its Van Eyck masterpiece and see the Castle of the Counts. Continue to picture-perfect Bruges for a fabulous Dine-Around evening, amid the ‘old world' atmosphere of the town center.

    meal(s):BB, DW
    hotel:NH Brugge (2 nights).
  4. Meet a Local Expert from Bruges, for a stroll along cobbled streets, lined with high-gabled houses from the Golden Age of the 16th century. Visit the Market Square dominated by the 80 meter Belfry of the Market Hall. Then explore Burg Square with its ornate Gothic town hall and glorious frescoes on the walls of the Holy Blood Chapel. With your free afternoon, maybe shop for handmade lace and praline chocolates? In the evening, perhaps an Optional Experience to the town of Ypres, where buglers sound the Last Post each evening in a moving tribute to those who fell during World War I.

    meal(s):BB
    hotel:NH Brugge.
  5. Travel into the French-speaking Walloon region of Belgium. Picturesque country roads lead you to the neo-Gothic Maredsous Abbey, towering over the Molignée Valley. The Abbey itself dates back to the 19th century, whereas the monks' dairy process and secret brewing recipe represent a thousand years of tradition. Sample for yourself the flowery, fruity ales along with the salty tang of their golden-crusted cheese. Only a short drive from here is Dinant on the River Meuse, its skyline dominated by the lofty citadel and onion-domed bell tower of the Collegiate Church. Continue on to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to arrive at your 18th century château home for two nights.

    meal(s):BB, DW
    hotel:Chateau D'Urspelt - Castle rooms, Clervaux (2 nights).
  6. Head for Bastogne in the morning to visit the Mardasson Monument, a star-shaped memorial dedicated to the US troops who died during WWII's ‘Battle of the Bulge'. You can also climb to the top for a perspective of what it might have been like during the winter of ‘44. Next, visit the Bastogne War Museum, a fascinating modern and interactive memorial centre highlighting the causes, events and consequences of the Second World War. Then onto Luxembourg City for sightseeing with a Local Expert. See the view over the Petrusse Ravine from the Pont Adolphe. Stroll through the old town to see the cathedral and the Palace of the Grand Duke. Visit the grave of US General George S. 8. Visit one of the manufacturers of original Delft blue pottery before moving on to the Hague, the elegant governmental center of the Netherlands. See the Binnenhof courtyards where the Parliament is situated and the impressive Peace Palace. Pass through picturesque villages and windmills of the Dutch countryside to Amsterdam for three fabulous nights. In a quaint Dutch village, you will be served a fresh and delicious Farm-to-Table Dinner that will of course be accompanied with wine.

    meal(s):BB, DW
    hotel:QO Amsterdam (3 nights).

The best way to see this remarkable city is from the water as you cruise through the canal district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the elegant merchant houses from the 16th and 17th centuries, their facades are a reflection of when trade flourished during Amsterdam's Golden Age. Relax as you pass stunning gables, beautiful churches and the iconic Magere Brug, better known as the Skinny Bridge. Disembark your cruise to wander the city with your Travel Director. Vacation:
Service rating : GET is easy to work with and our travel documents were delivered in a timely manner.
Vacation : All in all, we were satisfied with the itinerary of this tour. An opportunity for improvement for future tours may involve managing tour included experiences and optional experiences that are offered on the same day in places where the hotel location is outside of city centers (Luxembourg, Amsterdam). Some travelers were seemingly forced to either include an optional experience when they may not have wished to do so, or were forced to skip an included experience because of transportation limitations that were an impact of those accommodation locations. Specifically, the walking tour of Luxembourg City and the optional experience to Trier should probably both be marketed as included experiences in the tour itinerary, since there was no viable option to accommodate people who would have done the Luxembourg City tour but did not wish to do the optional excursion to Trier.

Vacation : Insight runs wonderful tours. Our tour guide, Gary, was patient, diplomatic, extremely helpful and accommodating, and very knowledgeable. The bus is beautiful and comfortable, and the bus driver, Gerard, was polite, helpful, and expert at driving and parking the huge bus. The itinerary was exciting. Everything possible was done to make everyone comfortable and happy. We look forward to our next Insight tour!

Vacation:
Service rating : First and foremost is the guide and driver were excellent. Chantal went above and beyond to make our vacation stress free and enjoyable. Gerard was the best. He got into places I thought were unnavigable but he did it. All in all I thought the trip met my expectations.
Vacation : I thought most of the add ons were good. I would have preferred an extra day in Rotterdam. I was not happy with the Chateau experience. If we didn't like there menu there was no place else to eat. Also it was pretty far from everything. I heard about Dinant and was looking forward to visiting but it wound up being a big disappointment. They were working on the canal so there were no boats and most of the shops were closed because of it. It was like visiting a ghost town. There should have been a substitution for this visit due to the circumstances.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering these countries.

  • The currency in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive in Europe, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Dutch cuisine is simple and rustic.  You might like to try specialties such as rookworst (smoked sausage), kibbeling (fried fish) and pannenkoeken (Dutch pancakes).  And, if you’re feeling adventurous you can try local raw herring prepared with onions and gherkins.  For something sweet, try stroopwafels, a delicious chewy cookie made with two thin layers of waffle and sticky syrup filling.

Belgian food is saucy, rich, and satisfying. Try popular dishes like waterzooi (fish stew), boudin blanc sausage, stoemp (Belgian mashed potatoes), moules-frites, and waffles.

If you enjoy large portions of meat and fish, potatoes, dashes of cream and wine, you’ll love the food in Luxembourg. Hearty options include pork and broad beans, fried blood sausage, pates and soups.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress, as well as comfortable walking shoes and a waterproof jacket with a hood.  For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping is less common in Europe than in the U.S. Many restaurants will include a service charge in the bill. While tipping it is not required, you can leave up to 10 percent gratuity for excellent service. In bars and cafes it’s appropriate to round up or leave some small change.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
