Service rating : The representatives were courteous and helpful every step of the way. This was our sixth tour with Grand European and we have always been very pleased.
Vacation : Wonderful hotels and the best local guides allowed us to get a good sense of St. Petersburg and Moscow as we covered lots of ground in a week. All the optional tours were exceptionally good. Our tour guide was extremely helpful and professional throughout our journey. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to extend their understanding and appreciation of Russia.

Vacation:
Service rating : We have traveled with Grand European for the last 5 European trips that we have taken together and until this year have found their customer service to be impeccable. However, when I had questions or concerns this year prior to the trip, I found the responses I received to be short or curt and made to feel like my concerns were foolish. Also, we discovered at the airports, that we had little time to get from point A to point B and we struggled to get to our gates on time. I now remember that when we booked the flights, I was askied if "everyone is able bodied?" I didn't realize that meant that we would almost have to run to make our flights. We both were "able bodied" when I booked the trip, but things have changed and I am very slow now. Had I been like before, we still would have found it difficult to get to the gates in the time allowed. In the future (if we book again), I will scrutinize the times between flights better. Another thing that occurred, that I don't think GET would have been aware of is that Indianapolis airport could not print all of our boarding passes there. They could only print the first flight (Air Canada). We were told that we had to get the rest printed when we got to Toronto. But, our flight from Indy to Toronto was delayed leaving Indy and arriving in Toronto. Then we had to go through customs and were sent through another customs area as well and by the time we could make it to the Lufthansa ticket desk to get boarding passes printed, printing of boarding passes was closed even though the flight was not due to leave for another hour! We had to be reticketed by Air Canada as it was their fault that we arrived late. Try as they might to get our luggage back and get both bags tagged correctly, it didn't happen. So, we arrived in St. Petersburg, Russia, 4 hours later than we should have, missed the shuttle and had to get our own cab to the hotel and we had no checked bags. With the help of our tour director, the bags arrived 5 days into the 9 day trip, but due to time constrains on our departure from the hotel in St. Petersburg to leaving on the high speed train to Moscow, we had to hire a taxi to go to the St. Petersburg airport at 6am and get our luggage and then hire a taxi to return to the group. In between arriving in St. Petersburg and the day we were to leave, we had to go out and purchase some clothes so that we were warm in the cold and snowy weather of St. Petersburg. I am telling you all of this so that you understand what problems it causes when there is not enough time booked between flights to go through customs and get to the terminal let alone have to have boarding passes printed! The tour itself was wonderful and there is no better tour director than Maja Poljansek (and we have had several really good ones with GET and Insight). She was the bright spot of our trip.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We're sorry to hear about the trouble you had with your flights and delayed luggage.  We do try to allow ample time for changing flights and customs but have no control over airline flight delays or computer issues. We would be happy to help contact the airline for possible compensation due to their delay and lost luggage.

Vacation : Only 2 evening meals were included and usually the optional excursions have included some dinners, but not this trip. I feel that dinners should be included as we had to hunt for places to eat or eat at the hotel and pay additional. It would help if we could see a list of optional excursions and what that includes when deciding about trips.
  • U.S. citizens traveling to Russiamust have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. Travelers visiting Russia will also need an entry visa.  We will send you application forms to complete to obtain your visa prior to departure. Visa costs and entry requirements can change at any time. Please visit travel.state.gov to learn more.

  • The currency in Russia is the Ruble. While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive in Russia, you’ll usually find better exchange rates in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Russia. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Russian food is rich and hearty, with a strong preference toward soups, herring, pickled vegetables, savory pancakes and rye breads. Try specialties such as beef stroganoff, borscht soup (beetroot soup) and pelmeni (meat dumplings). Russians love sweets and pride themselves on their desserts, especially the traditional ponchiki (hot sugared doughnuts). Vodka is popular and is often served straight or can be flavored with herbs and spices.

  • Russia’s continental climate varies dramatically, with temperatures reaching the high 80s during summer heat waves and normally plummeting to single digits during winter months. We suggest bringing a variety of clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping has become more common throughout Eastern Europe in recent years.  In Russia, it’s acceptable to leave 5-15 percent gratuity when dining out if a service fee has not already been added to your bill. It’s always a good idea to tip in cash and also important to note that some restaurants in Russia will not accept credit cards.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.

Optional Experiences are subject to change and seasonal availability. Your Travel Director will supply you with a final list of Optional Experiences available on your trip, and pricing. Optional Experiences cannot be booked online; they can only be purchased during your trip through your Travel Director.
