Overview

Let yourself be seduced by the sophistication and elegance of a festive sojourn through France. Medieval chateaux, historic city centers and sumptuous French flavors of roasted chestnuts, fresh oysters and effervescent champagne are the order of the day as you travel from Paris to Burgundy, Strasbourg to Dijon.

  1. Board your overnight flight to Europe (not included).

  2. On arrival at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, transfers will operate at 8am, 11am and 2pm. Guests arriving later should make their own way to the hotel. Savor the good life in 'la belle' France on this sophisticated sojourn that will see you visit charming towns, elegant country châteaux and one of Europe's oldest Christmas markets. This evening we kickstart our festive foray through France, joining our fellow travelers and Travel Director for a Welcome Reception and orientation drive past the glittering icons of Paris, from the Champs Élysées to the Eiffel Tower.

    meal(s):Welcome Reception
    hotel:Novotel Tour Eiffel
  3. Delve behind the grand boulevards of Paris, joining a Local Specialist on their discovery of the hidden squares and secret lanes of a Paris that few outsiders have had an opportunity to explore. Your short insider walk will culminate in a visit to one of the city's loveliest squares, where you'll encounter the authentic flavors of and day-to-day life in Paris. Stroll through charming historic neighborhoods before ascending to the second level of the iconic Eiffel Tower for spectacular panoramic views of the city—the grand boulevards, manicured gardens and iconic Seine stretch as far as the eye can see. This afternoon, we leave Paris behind and journey to a magnificent château in the Loire Valley, our home for the next two nights.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
    hotel:Château de Beauvois
  4. Tread in the footsteps of French nobility, admiring the beautiful châteaux of the Loire Valley. Join your Local Specialist for a visit to the exquisite Amboise Royal Château, where King Franҫois I once hosted Leonardo da Vinci, whose tomb now lies in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert adjoining the château. Next stop is the fairy-tale Chenonceau Château which straddles the River Cher. Admire its beautiful Gothic and Renaissance architecture, reflected in the waters of the river, and exquisite masterpieces by Rubens and Tintoretto, before rambling through its magnificent landscaped gardens. This evening, we feed our soul and stomach during an unforgettable Be My Guest Experience with 'bon amis.'

meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Be My Guest Dinner
  5. The lively city of Dijon and its imperial heritage take center stage today as we explore the capital of Burgundy, whose historic center has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Join a Local Specialist who'll regale you with fascinating insights into the lives of the dynamic Burgundian Dukes and their link to the House of Habsburg. Admire the city's well-preserved monuments and see the Gothic masterpiece that is the Church of Notre Dame and grand Ducal Palace, overlooked by the Philippe le Bon tower. The rest of the day is yours to explore this medieval city. Saunter down the splendid Rue des Forges for a journey back to medieval times or consider a visit to the superb Musée des Beaux-Arts.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
    hotel:Mercure Dijon Centre Clémenceau
  6. The smell of roasted chestnuts on a chilly day makes our visit to the capital of Christmas even more special. We visit Strasbourg's 'Christkindelsmärik' today, one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe and certainly one of the best, with 300 wooden chalets spread out over 11 sites. Browse the beautifully decorated Christmas stalls heaving with handmade decorations, local delicacies and Alsatian fare, then pay a visit to the giant Christmas tree on Place Kléber, waiting for night to fall to witness it towering over the square in all its illuminated glory.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Le Boma
  7. See Strasbourg's sights from the water this morning as you board your included river cruise that will take you past some of the important buildings of the European Union institutions such as the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. See the colorful half-timbered houses of Petite France that line the river banks and travel through one of the lock systems on the river. Spend the rest of the day exploring this beautiful medieval city, including its UNESCO World Heritage historic city center.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  8. We journey back north to Paris today via the ancient Roman city of Reims. Pop the cork on France's capital of champagne and uncover the imperial heritage of a city that for over a century crowned France's kings. After a brief orientation, set off to explore the ornate Gothic architecture of the 14th-century Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims or join an optional experience to sample the fruity flavors of the region's fine champagnes. We continue to Paris where we spend the next two nights seduced by the glitz and glamour of the City of Light. Kick-start your love affair with Paris and consider joining an optional experience to one of the city's famous cabaret shows to sample Montmatre's nightlife.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Novotel Tour Eiffel
  9. Spend a full day exploring Paris on your terms. Stroll along the Seine, popping in to a patisserie for a tasty treat and some people watching, or get your art fix at the Louvre, Pompidou Center and even Le Marais. Alternatively travel to the outskirts of Paris to La Vallée Shopping Outlet Village and engage in some retail therapy at one of the best outlet shopping villages in Europe with over 110 designer shops to chose from. This evening, we revel in the city's intoxicating spirit of bonhomie as we dine in one of the city's fine brasseries to toast to new friendships.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Farewell Dinner
  10. For now it's time to bid a festive farewell to France at the end of a memorable trip. Return transfers will arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport at 8am and 11:30am. Conditions apply.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to France must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering France.

  • The currency in France is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some euros for when you first arrive in France, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate when you arrive in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in France. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • The French have an ongoing love affair with food and wine. Meals are lovingly prepared and consumed leisurely through a bevy of appetizers and main courses, usually accompanied by a number of wines. Boeuf bourgignon (beef stew with wine, herbs and vegetables), coq au vin (chicken cooked with bacon in a white wine and herb sauce) and bouillabaisse (fish stew) are featured on many menus. Cheese lovers will not be disappointed with hundreds of varieties to choose from.  And no visit would be complete without a visit to a pâtisserie, with its delicate pastries you will definitely be tempted.

Wine is the most popular drink in France and is consumed at both lunch and dinner. Coffee is generally served black, unless a café au lait or café crème (with milk) is requested. For a simple and inexpensive lunch or snack, stop by a local bakery or food cart for a baguette au jambon (ham sandwich), crêpes, or a buckwheat galette filled with melted gruyère cheese and mushrooms. Many restaurants also offer a simple three course menu at a reasonable price.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • In France, a 15% service compris is included by law in the price of food and drink. Tipping in addition to this service charge is never expected, but always appreciated. If you’d like to leave something extra, keep in mind that even in the fanciest restaurants, people rarely tip more than 5-10%. A good rule of thumb is to leave an extra €1 for every €20 spent. Rather than adding gratuity to your credit card slip, leave coins in the tray where the check was presented to ensure that your waiter receives it.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity. We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
