Overview

Embark on an epic encounter with the spectacularly scenic western wilderness of Canada and the U.S., where you'll meet the smokejumpers who risk their lives to protect the remote forests.

  1. The Old West gateway to Yellowstone and the Tetons launches our epic journey through towering mountain ranges and inspiring landscapes. Check in to your Jackson hotel and enjoy an afternoon at leisure before meeting your Travel Director and fellow travelers for a Welcome Reception this evening.

    meal(s):Welcome Reception

  2. Admire the dazzling natural wonders of the Grand Teton National Park by raft as you float down the Snake River, keeping a keen eye out for moose and grizzly bears. You'll visit the National Museum of Wildlife Art, featuring pieces that date back as far as 2500 BC. Then, walk through the town's signature elk-antler arches in Town Square as you enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure. This evening, indulge in a true taste of cowboy life, joining your companions for a Regional Meal at a local camp, paired with stories and music.

  3. Learn about the Mormon settlers who battled the harsh conditions of Jackson Hole to sustain their community in Mormon Row, an Historic District we'll have an opportunity to visit as we chart our course through Grand Teton National Park. Travel along the scenic Teton Park Road and stop at the Colter Bay Visitor's Center to view a collection of American Indian artifacts. Arriving in Yellowstone National Park, you'll pay a visit to Old Faithful, watching as its waters arc high into the air as it has done approximately every 90 minutes since the Washburn Expedition discovered it. Encounter first-hand Yellowstone's spouting geysers, bubbling mudpots and turquoise hot springs and learn about this geothermal wonderland.

    meal(s):Full Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Holiday Inn West Yellowstone
  4. Our day begins the expansive landscapes of Hayden Valley, home to herds of bison, scattered elk and the occasional grizzly bear. Explore the rusting walls of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, then continue on the upper loop to Dunraven Pass and the Lamar Valley, the most ruggedly beautiful regions of the park. At Mammoth Springs, admire the gentle cascade of water running down the multi-colored mineral terraces, resembling frozen waterfalls cascading down into the valley.

    meal(s):Full Breakfast
  5. Big Sky Country beckons next as we travel through Montana and stop at the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site. Gain insights into the heritage of cowboys and cattlemen at this working ranch which celebrates the Western cattle industry. Our final stop in Glacier Country today is the Western Montana township of Missoula where we'll visit the Smokejumper Visitor Center and training base. Join a Local Specialist who will reveal how the highly trained smokejumpers parachute into remote areas of national forests to help fight the spread of wildfires.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend $4-5 per person/per day for your driver and $6-7 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 dollars per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
