Overview

Peer into the depths of Africa's largest canyon, admire the stark beauty of Sossusvlei's ancient backdrops and see the shimmering expanse of the Etosha Pan on this expedition through Namibia's surreal landscapes.

  1. Your epic encounter with Namibia kicks off in its capital, Windhoek. On arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a day at leisure before meeting your Travel Director and fellow travelers for a Welcome Reception and dinner.

    meal(s):Welcome Reception
    hotel:Windhoek Country Club Resort
  2. Embrace the freedom of the open road as we venture into the Kalahari Desert – Namibia's boundless, sandy beauty. We make our way through the historic town of Rehoboth, then take our front-row seats on a scenic nature drive through this ‘thirst land', where trees loom and rocky shadows stretch out on the horizon against the setting sun. Arrive later at the elegant Zebra Kalahari Lodge, located within the Intu Afrika Private Game Reserve.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Zebra Kalahari Lodge & Spa
  3. See the iconic forest of Quiver Trees – the towering aloes from which the San people fashion their quivers to this day. After a short stop in Keetmanshoop with free time for lunch, travel to Naute Dam before arriving at your motor-themed lodge to savor a spectacular Namibian sunset.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Canyon Roadhouse
  4. Peer over the ancient chasm carved by the Fish River to form Africa's largest canyon. Carved over millennia, the Fish River Canyon's gigantic ravine provides sanctuary to klipspringer, zebra and even wild horses. We continue our journey to the spectacular Aus Mountains where you'll spend the afternoon getting close to nature.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Desert Horse Inn
  5. Immerse yourself in the Southern Namib region admiring desert vistas and expansive skies as we conquer the open road. We pay a visit to Baron von Wolf's Duwisib Castle to learn about its history as a gift of love for his American wife. After a day of exploring, you'll want to settle in to the comfort of your lodge and spend the afternoon relaxing.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Hammerstein Lodge
  6. In a country renowned for its epic landscapes, competition for the top spot is tough. But it is Sossusvlei that rightly deserves this crown and it is where we begin our adventure today. Gaze up at the towering Dune 45 surrounded by the eerie, but beautiful salt pans, then explore the ravine walls of the Sesriem Canyon, carved out by the Tsauchab River. We journey past the Namib Naukluft Mountains then set off on a 4x4 drive into the depths of the Namib Desert under whose glittering canopy of stars we'll stay tonight at the Namib Naukluft Lodge.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Namib Naukluft Lodge
  7. After breakfast, we drive to the German-inspired seaside town of Swakopmund with its colonial buildings and encroaching desert. After a leisurely afternoon, we embark on a sundowner tour into the sands of the desert and an opportunity to snap a selfie on the crest of Dune 7, the highest dune in Namibia.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Strand Hotel
  8. Live life in the fast lane and embark on some of Swakopmund's action-packed activities such as quad-biking, sand-boarding, or a catamaran trip. Then it's time to connect with locals and savor some hearty 'vetkoek' with a Damara family in Swakopmund's Mondesa Township. Watch how the dough rises in a traditional three-legged 'potjie' pot as you learn about life in the township.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  9. Follow Namibia's salt route en route to Damaraland, a place where mysterious flat-topped lava mountains and petrified trees cast shadows across the terracotta-colored terrain. We make an important stop at Twyfelfontein to admire its ancient rock engravings, then explore the rocky-red Organ Pipes carved into the face of the mountain before arriving at our lodge this afternoon.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Twyfelfontein Country Lodge
  10. Enjoy free time today until it's time to join a drive along the Aba Huab River in search of kudu, oryx, springbuck, ostrich and herds of rare desert-dwelling elephant. These elephants have adapted to living harsh desert conditions and can only be found in Namibia and Mali.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
  11. As we journey north, we meet the OvaHimba tribe to gain insights into their hunter-gatherer traditions that have spanned thousands of years. Your visit will make a difference by contributing to funds used for food and other necessities. Despite vast desolate landscapes, Namibia is renowned for its wildlife and there's no better place to encounter the array of animal and bird life that lives within its borders than Etosha National Park. This afternoon, we venture out on our first game drive through the park.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Okaukuejo Resort
  12. Explore one of the world's great wildlife sanctuaries on a full-day safari. Enjoy a deep connection with your natural surrounds, joining a guide who will uncover the secrets of the bush and maximize your game viewing chances.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
  13. We bid farewell to Etosha and travel south back to Windhoek. This evening enjoy a Farewell Dinner at your resort to celebrate the end of a magical journey through Namibia.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Farewell Dinner
    hotel:Windhoek Country Club Resort
  14. With our journey at its close, we say goodbye to our new-found friends and transfer to Windhoek airport.

  • Namibia gets 300 annual days of sunshine, making it a phenomenal travel destination year-round! The average day temperature during the African summer (mid-October to mid-March) can soar up to and over 100' near the Kalahari and Namib desserts. During the winter months (May to August) though, it can be a lovely 68' with nighttime-temperatures dropping down to the 30s.

  • Observes Central Africa Time year round, Two (2) hours ahead of GMT. Namibia does not observe daylight savings. EST plus 7 in winter EST plus 6 in summer

  • The Government of Namibia allows citizens of specific countries and territories to travel to Namibia for tourism purposes for three months with an ordinary passport. U.S. citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry. It’s best to have at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps.

  • The Namibian Dollar is the currency of Namibia. However, both the Namibian dollar and Rand are accepted in Namibia. Pro Tip: It is easier to exchange your Rand into US Dollars once home, so if you plan on exchanging money once back in the states, use the Rand when traveling in Namibia.

  • The import of meat or meat products (dried, canned etc.), plants, seeds, vegetables, fruits, livestock, endangered wildlife species and products thereof (for example clothing & accessories) into the United States and Canada is prohibited. This includes Ostrich eggs & animal skins.

  • Please check in at least three hours prior to departure for international flights, two hours for regional flights and 90 minutes prior for domestic flights. Please reconfirm all onward flights at least 72 hours prior to departure. Local airline numbers are listed on your flight itinerary enclosed with your documents.

  • Shopping varies according to destination. Generally African handicrafts such as leather goods, wooden carvings, sculptures, paintings, bead work and woven articles are popular purchases. Jewelry is an excellent purchase in Africa.

  • While cuisine in some places reflects the region’s British colonial influence—you may find that many locals enjoy afternoon tea, the theme of international cuisine is also prevalent throughout Namibia. You'll find everything from Indian curries to German pastries! Remember, it’s important to remember to drink bottled water only. Refrain from ingesting tap water, including when brushing your teeth. Avoid eating fresh fruits and vegetables unless they’re cooked or washed in clean water and peeled.

  • Climate can be extreme, even in winter months. Guests should pack sunscreen, a sunhat, sunglasses, long-sleeved shirts and cool cotton fabrics. When in the Namib desert the sun is reflected up from the sand! Night-time and early morning can be cold so jumpers and a jacket will be necessary.

For the best safari experience, make sure you bring the essentials: T-shirts and shorts, blouses with long sleeves (even in summer, they will protect you from the sun and from mosquitoes), safari trousers or jeans for evenings, cooler days and walking at the water properties, closed in shoes will help to protect your feet from cuts and scratches when walking through bush/grass-lands will also act as a barrier protection in rare cases against bites or stings from animals, a fleece or sweater and a warm jacket for game drives (necessary, even in summer), sun block, lip balm, sunglasses, hat and insect repellent, binoculars, camera (extra memory card & battery for avid photographers), a light, compact raincoat is a good idea for the summer, swimsuit – all the Desert & Delta Safaris properties have swimming pools.

In the winter months (May-August) bring beanie, gloves, scarf, warm jacket for the morning and evenings as it can get very cold. Layers of clothing are most practical for the fluctuating day/night temperatures of Botswana. Dull and/or neutral colors are more suitable for safari; white is not practical. It is best to pack hardy, durable clothing.

See our Guide on What to Wear on Safari HERE.

  • You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations and anti-malarial requirements before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements  as they may not easily be obtained at the locations on this trip.

YELLOW FEVER: A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. As well, local governments may require proof of a yellow fever vaccination (often referred to as a yellow card ) or a statement of medical exemption from the vaccine.

It's also quite common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate on your arrival back home. It is your responsibility to check with your doctor well in advance of leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting.

  • You don't need to be a super-fit athlete to go on an overland safari, but you will need a good level of physical resilience and movement, especially for entering and exiting the vehicles, and for taking long trips on bumpy roads.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
