Upon arrival at Port Elizabeth you will be met and transferred to Shamwari Bayethe, your home for the next 3-nights including all meals and twice daily game drives in a malaria free area.
Shamwari, meaning “my friend” in Shona, is the pinnacle of private game reserves and home to the coveted Big 5. Stretching 25,000 hectares over a malaria free landscape, it offers an award-winning nature experience and is one of the largest private conservation initiatives in Southern Africa. Bayethe is an impressive stone walled and thatch roofed lodge with a large deck area overlooking a waterhole. The lounge and dining area spills out onto the deck. The spacious superior tents offer unsurpassed comforts and are shrouded by the rich vegetation, providing privacy and a feeling of seclusion with views of the African bush. The tents have their own private plunge pool, large indoor baths, and outdoor showers.
Your first game drive is scheduled for this afternoon. On arrival, have a quick freshen up then meet your ranger over afternoon tea before setting off in search of wildlife. Make sure your camera is charged, you never know what you will encounter!
Your day begins early. The freshly brewed coffee and tea with rusks (South African version of biscotti), fruit and muffins will prepare you for this morning’s game drive with an expert ranger. After an exhilarating search for tracks to see what the animals have been up to during the night, and tracking down wildlife in the bush, you will stop for a break of hot drinks and snacks, and a chance to stretch your legs. Continue your game drive en route back to the lodge for a hearty breakfast that awaits you on your return.
After breakfast, you may enjoy a bush walk close to the camp accompanied by a ranger and tracker. Walks allow you a better chance to see some of the smaller creatures of the bush as well as an opportunity to learn more about the flora and fauna of the region and to have a chance to follow tracks in more detail. While on safari at Bayethe you will learn how to make a South African dish during an interactive cooking class.
In the late afternoon everyone gathers for high tea, before heading out with your ranger and tracker for the afternoon game drive through the reserve. The game drive extends into the evening to view seldom seen nocturnal species by torchlight. This is when the nocturnal animals come to life and the lions go out on their hunt! Once again, you will take a break somewhere out in the bush, in a scenic spot to watch a magnificent African sunset while sipping a sundowner cocktails . Return to lodge for a delicious dinner in the outdoor boma or possibly a dinner in the bush.
Activities at Shamwari Bayethe revolve around morning and evening game drives in 4x4 safari vehicles, each lasting about three to four hours. There are also guided nature walks, bird watching, well-being treatments or visits to the Rhino Awareness Center, Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and historic tours, all adding to this magnificent experience.
Your wilderness experience begins today with another early start. You are accompanied by your expert game rangers, who will provide interesting information and anecdotes about the inhabitants of the bush. Each safari game drive is an opportunity to discover something new. While seeing big game is always exhilarating, there are many smaller species that are just as captivating.
After an early morning game drive to track the animals that may have eluded you so far, return to the lodge for breakfast. Later you will be transferred to Port Elizabeth for your scheduled flight to Johannesburg. Bid farewell to the place that has given you unforgettable wildlife encounters in the African bush. On arrival at Johannesburg's Oliver Tambo International Airport, connect with your scheduled international South African Airways flight back to the USA.

All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers. If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.
We suggest bringing a variety of comfortable, lightweight clothing that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Sturdy walking shoes are important. Insect repellent and sunscreen may come in handy, as well as a light jacket and reusable water bottle. For more helpful information please refer to Packing for Safari.

Music and song at the Amy Biehl Foundation
You will be accompanied by an English-speaking driver/guide to visit the Amy Biehl Aftercare Centre in Gugulethu, for interaction with the kids and gumboot dancing demonstrations and lesson.
Amy Elizabeth Biehl was a white American graduate of Stanford University and an anti-Apartheid activist in South Africa who was murdered by black Cape Town residents while a black mob shouted anti-white slurs. The four men convicted of her murder were released as part of the Truth and Reconciliation process. 18 years ago, on August 25, 1993, Amy made her transition from her eventful life on earth to an even larger life of committed service to the under-served and to the hopeful. The Amy Biehl Foundation draws breath and inspiration from Amy and her legacy. It is a creation of family and friends who loved her in life, and is now extended by many hundreds of new friends - young and old - who want to make a constructive difference in their world and who enjoy doing this in Amy's name.
Amy's legacy is how she led her life. Hers is a legacy of inspiration, not tragedy. Amy was an extraordinary example of dedication, perseverance, courage, and compassion. She lived her life to the fullest, never accepting failure in any of her pursuits. It was her goal to become the best and to use her talents to improve the world. She believed it was her duty, as a person afforded opportunity and education, to actively seek social change for those not so fortunate. It was her dedication and courage that continues to inspire so many people throughout the world.

ROBBEN ISLAND - HALF DAY
Board the Robben Island Ferry at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and take part in a half day Robben Island tour.
For nearly 400 years, Robben Island was a place of banishment, exile, isolation and imprisonment for political "troublemakers" and social outcasts. During the apartheid years Robben Island became internationally known for its institutional brutality. Some freedom fighters spent more than a quarter of a century in prison for their beliefs. Nelson Mandela was one of them.
Those imprisoned on the Island succeeded on a psychological and political level in turning a prison 'hell-hole' into a symbol of freedom and personal liberation. Robben Island came to symbolize, not only for South Africa and the African continent, but also for the entire world, the triumph of the human spirit over enormous hardship and adversity. You will be escorted around the island by an ex-political prisoner, and given insight into the past and how the human spirit triumphs.

SHARK CAGE DIVING - FULL DAY
Departs: Daily at 4:15am (depending on weather and tides).
Here, in the heart of the world's Great White Shark mecca you’ll experience a unique diving opportunity to witness the wonder of these amazing creatures.
Your day begins (pick up times start from around 4:15am and are weather / tide related) with a 2 hour scenic transfer from door to door, a light meal with tea and coffee is provided, followed by the excitement of the launch and a full adrenalin packed day at sea around Dyer Island and Geyser Rock - an area famous for its aptly named channel 'Shark Alley' and inundated with African ‘Jackass’ Penguins, Cape Fur Seals and Southern Right Whales (in season)!
The anticipation mounts as the cage is gently lowered and you ready yourself for that first, electric encounter. It's that once in a lifetime rush as the solitude of the sea encases you and you come face to face with one of the most powerful predators on earth. Shark cage diving in South Africa is high adventure and an experience that will leave you breathless! Divers and non-divers can rest assured that diving and observing will be a secure and wondrous experience. You will be fully briefed on all safety procedures by the team on board. All the necessary diving and safety equipment is provided but don't forget your camera!
Sharks are usually wary at first so you’ll wait a while for them to settle before the dive cage is lowered. The cage takes 8 people and each group spends about 20 minutes in the water, face to face with the sharks! Please note that the area is not enclosed so the sharks come and go as they please.
Hot soup is served on your return to dry land (please let us know of any dietary requirements) where you’ll be able to swap stories about your experience.
Pricing (subject to change): US $195 per person.
