Overview

Wander through the medieval cities of Óbidos, Évora and Guimarães, and visit the religious landmarks of Fátima, Batalha and the dramatic Hieronymite Monastery, enjoying a delicious pasteis de nata or two along the way.

Travel to Europe often requires an overnight flight. Please arrange flights to arrive on or before Day 1.

  1. Bem vindo a Lisboa. On arrival at Lisbon Airport, transfers will operate at 9:30 am, 12:30 pm and 3:30 pm. Guests arriving later should make their own way to the hotel. A sea of pastel pinks, yellows and blues dot the seven hills of the romantic Portuguese capital, which you will have an opportunity to explore today before meeting your fellow travelers and Travel Director for a Welcome Reception and orientation drive past the city's most iconic sights.

    meal(s):Welcome Reception
    hotel:Olissippo Marquês de Sá
  2. Delve into Lisbon's centuries-old seafaring heritage today, paying tribute to the brave men who set off from these shores to discover a new world. We'll see the shimmering white Monument to the Discoveries, the iconic suspension bridge spanning the River Tagus and the mighty Belém Tower. We join a Local Specialist for a sightseeing tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Hieronymite Monastery, an exquisite testament to 15th-century Manueline architecture and art. Join an Optional Experience to the historic towns of Estoril, Cascais and Sintra to explore the famous Golden Triangle, or join a traditional Portuguese dinner amidst the heart-warming, melancholic sounds of the fado.

    meal(s):Breakfast
  3. Travel to the ancient Alentejo city of Évora. Join your Local Specialist and visit the elaborate cathedral, Roman temple and the Chapel of Bones. We spend the rest of our day delving into the medieval history of this enchanting city. Consider joining an Optional Experience to the village of Monsaraz set against the stunning backdrop of golden olive groves. This evening we dine at our hotel in Évora.

    meal(s):Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:M'Ar de Ar Muralhas
  4. Our fist stop today is in the quaint hilltop town of Castelo de Vide with its charming white faҫades, narrow alleys and fascinating Jewish Quarter. Travel north towards the Serra de Estrela mountains and arrive later in Viseu, set high on a plateau near the famous Dão vineyards. Explore the city's rich art and architectural history, visiting the 12th-century Sé, standing imposingly on a hill overlooking much of the city.

    meal(s):Breakfast
    hotel:Grao Vasco
  5. Vineyard-clad hills provide an enchanting backdrop for our journey today through the Douro Valley where port wine is produced. We explore the magnificent gardens at the beautiful baroque Palácio de Mateus, depicted on the label of the distinctive Mateus wine bottles. We then continue via Guimarães for views of its impressive 10th-century castle before arriving in Porto where we will spend the next two nights.

    meal(s):Breakfast
    hotel:Crowne Plaza
  6. Join a Local Specialist today for a sightseeing tour in Porto which takes you past baroque churches and along the winding cobblestone lanes that tumble down towards the Douro. See the remarkable bridges that span the river and the Gothic Church of St. Francis. Visit the Stock Exchange Palace with its splendid Arabian Hall inspired by Granada's Alhambra, before we dive into culture and into the centuries-old tradition of local port production at a tasting in a port cellar. Spend the rest of the afternoon strolling through the historic center of Porto, admire the azulejo-clad faҫades or visit Livraria Lello, the city's oldest book store with its iconic red staircase.

    meal(s):Breakfast
  7. Soak up the grand atmosphere of one of Europe's greatest and oldest universities and meander through the ancient streets and squares of Coimbra this morning, before journeying to the Templar city of Tomar to visit the Convent of Christ, originally built as a Templar stronghold in the 12th century and today is an exquisite reminder of the Portuguese Renaissance. We arrive in the pilgrimage center of Fátima where we'll dine in our hotel.

    meal(s):Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Fátima
  8. This morning we rub shoulders with Catholic pilgrims who have journeyed to the shrine where three young shepherds famously saw the apparition of the Virgin at the pilgrimage site of Fátima. En route to Lisbon, we stop at the imposing monastery of Batalha—a UNESCO World Heritage site and the best example of late Gothic architecture in Portugal. Our next stop is at the quaint village of Nazaré before we visit Óbidos with its quaint white-washed houses and cobblestone roads. Our last night in Portugal together sees us toast to an incredible journey as we connect with locals over a memorable Be My Guest Farewell Dinner.

    meal(s):Breakfast, Be My Guest

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Portugal must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Portugal.

  • The currency in Portugal is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Portugal. We recommend bringing a credit card for purchases and informing your financial institutions of your travel plans before leaving home to avoid having your purchases flagged as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • With Portugal’s long coastline, seafood is featured prominently on their menus. Popular dishes include sopa de mariscos (a shellfish soup) and bacalhau (dried codfish), and Portuguese grilled chicken prepared with chili, garlic and olive oil. For dessert, don’t miss out on the famous pastéis de nata custard pastry or arroz dolce (rice pudding) and a glass of port wine.

  • Portugal has a temperate marine climate with hot summers and wet winters. We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping is less common in Portugal than in the U.S. When dining out, it’s appropriate, although not required, to leave an extra euro or two or up to 5-10 percent for great service. Leave your tip on the table rather than adding it to your credit card slip to ensure that your waiter receives it.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
