What Transportation Is Used On-Shore?
Trafalgar works with reputable motorcoach providers selected to meet our quality standards. Coaches are typically air-conditioned and include rest stops as needed. In certain destinations, equipment standards may vary, but the best available transportation is always arranged.
Optional Experiences
Optional Experiences are add-on experiences that are designed to complement your included sightseeing and itinerary. They offer additional insights into the culture and character of the areas you’re visiting and provide some wonderful highlights to your travels.
What Meals and Drinks Are Included Each Day on the River Cruise?
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily are included in your river cruise price. Breakfast is typically a buffet with a live egg station and fresh regional options, including juice, tea, coffee, and water.
Lunches typically feature a generous buffet with a rotating specialty dish at a live cooking station. Included drink options are wine, beer, soft drinks, tea, coffee, and water, with local wines changing daily over a 7-day rotation.
Dinner is served à la carte, offering a three-course menu with a daily choice of three starters, mains, and desserts inspired by the destinations visited. Included drink options are wine, beer, soft drinks, tea, coffee, and water, with local wines changing daily over a 7-day rotation. Optional specialty dishes are available for purchase.
Are All Drinks Included or Will They Be Available for Purchase Onboard?
Complimentary juice, tea, coffee, and water are included with breakfast. At lunch and dinner, regional wine, beer, soft drinks, tea, coffee, and water are also included. Coffee stations are available onboard throughout the day, offering a complimentary selection of teas and coffees.
Should you wish to enjoy additional beverages, these are available for purchase in the lounge bar from 2:00pm until closing. Any purchases will be charged to your stateroom and settled at the end of your river cruise.
Is There a Dress Code for Mealtimes Onboard?
Your ship’s main restaurant is a relaxed, welcoming space. Smart casual is perfectly suitable for evenings, though we kindly ask that shorts and T-shirts are not worn to dinner.
Is the Water Safe to Drink Onboard; Are There Ice Machines?
Yes. Each ship is equipped with a modern filtration system, and the tap water in your stateroom or suite is safe to drink. For added comfort, drinking water is also provided in your room, along with two complimentary reusable water bottles.
On most ships, a convenient self-service ice machine is available. If needed, ice buckets can also be requested from the bar.
Special Dietary Needs
Please notify GET if you have special dietary concerns or considerations that need to be addressed while traveling. Staff will do their best to accommodate your request, though options may vary depending on local availability. GET cannot guarantee that all requests can be met. Guests are responsible for providing detailed information regarding medically related dietary concerns. Not all requests can be accommodated, and we appreciate your understanding.
Where Does the Ship Dock During a River Cruise?
River cruise ships typically dock right in the heart of cities and towns, often just steps from iconic sights and local neighborhoods. Because rivers flow directly through these destinations, stepping ashore is easy and convenient, allowing you to immerse yourself in the culture, scenery, and stories of each place from the moment you arrive. With most sailing taking place overnight, you’ll often wake up each morning in a new and charming riverside destination.
When the Ship Is Docked, Can Guests Get Off and Explore on Their Own?
Absolutely. When the ship is docked, you’re free to explore at your own pace or relax on the Sun Deck and enjoy the passing scenery. Each ship offers complimentary bicycles and safety helmets, giving you the flexibility to discover your surroundings independently. Your Experience Director and Experience Manager are always on hand to share local insights and recommendations, helping you make the most of your time in each destination.
What Is the Difference Between a Stateroom and a Suite?
Our ships offer a range of stateroom categories, designated by deck and location. River view staterooms and suites are thoughtfully designed for comfort and convenience, featuring individual climate control, a flat-screen TV, internal telephone, safety deposit box, hair dryer, complimentary bottled water, and a private bathroom stocked with bath and body products.
Suites are larger and have more amenities than staterooms such as a seating area and minibar with included beverages. A full description of each stateroom category with images, by ship, can be found on our ship page.
Passports
Each guest must ensure that their passport is valid for at least six months beyond the conclusion of their river cruise and that they have acquired all necessary visas and permits. Multiple-entry visas may be required if you are entering a country more than once on your holiday.
Visa and entry requirements vary by nationality and passport country of issuance and may change without notice. Guests are responsible for confirming the latest requirements for each country visited and any transit countries before travel and obtaining any necessary visas or travel authorizations. Please allow adequate time for processing.
United Kingdom and Northern Ireland Transiting Travelers
From January 8, 2025 UK law requires all travelers to have a valid Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter or transit through the United Kingdom, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which must be obtained in advance of travel. Apply for Your UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA): Visit this link for more info.
Visa Requirements
Access the latest entry requirements for all your destinations with our user-friendly Destination Entry Guide. Powered by CIBT, the leading authority in travel visas and US passports; check back as often as you like before your trip to ensure you have everything you need before you depart.
Baggage Allowance & Onboard Storage
Due to limited storage space onboard ships and motorcoaches, guests are asked to bring one (1) suitcase and one (1) carry-on bag per person, excluding purses.
To maximize the space in your stateroom, your suitcase will be stored under your bed, so we suggest your main hold luggage/case does not exceed 76cm x 45cm x 25cm (30” x 18” x 10”).
Additional fees may be assessed onsite for excess baggage. In some destinations there are health and safety restrictions around how much weight Crew Members and Drivers are able to lift, therefore a maximum of 23kg (50lbs) weight restriction is strictly enforced.
Each stateroom and suite is equipped with a safety deposit box. It's recommend to leave valuables at home whenever possible. Please note that Trafalgar cannot be held responsible for valuables left in staterooms or suites.
Guests are responsible for their baggage and personal belongings at all times. Trafalgar is not responsible for loss, theft or damage. A Travel Protection Plan covering lost, stolen or damaged baggage is strongly recommended.
Airline restrictions with hold or hand luggage
Airline baggage regulations vary by carrier and are subject to change. Each guest is responsible for confirming baggage weight, size, carry-on allowances and any applicable fees directly with their airline prior to travel. Be sure to check regulations for both international and domestic flight segments, as allowances may differ.
Packing Tips for a Trafalgar River Cruise
Prepare for a variety of weather conditions depending on your travel season and the regions through which you will be cruising. Layering is always your best approach, allowing you to comfortably adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day, including those onboard and ashore.
Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket (preferably hooded) or a heavier-weight windbreaker for cooler temperatures.
Comfortable, sporty, smart-casual daywear is suitable both onboard and onshore. For warmer temperatures, lightweight, breathable fabrics that can be layered work well. For early spring and late fall departures, heavier cotton or wool tops, long-sleeved shirts and pants are perfectly appropriate.
You will participate in a significant amount of walking over uneven terrain during your time ashore. For your comfort and safety, we recommend comfortable walking shoes with good ankle support. Sturdy sandals are another good option.
For evenings, resort-style attire is perfectly suitable; however, we do ask that shorts not be worn to dinner.
During your trip, you will be supplied with Vox Tour Guide Systems, which will let you hear your Local Specialist during selected experiences. We supply a one Vox in-ear earphone, but we recommend you bring a personal set of earphones with an Auxiliary Audio Cable. This will ensure you have the sound quality which suits your preferences.
Is Porterage Included?
Porterage is included for your luggage upon arrival at the ship for your main hold luggage/ bag (one item per person).
Are There Laundry Services Onboard?
Yes, self-service washing machines, dryers, and ironing boards are available onboard, with washing detergent available upon request from Reception. Dry-cleaning services are not offered; however, limited laundry services may be available for an additional fee.
We highly recommend having travel insurance that covers medical expenses while abroad.
Spa Treatments & Massages While Cruising*
Massage services are available onboard for an additional fee and can be booked at Reception. Any charges will be added to your onboard account and conveniently settled prior to disembarkation.
Mobility Concerns
Passengers must advise GET at the time of booking of any physical, medical, or other special needs that require accommodation.
Trafalgar does not employ staff nurses or doctors onboard its ships, nor can it provide personal medical or mobility devices such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, or prescription eyeglasses. Personal assistance services, including help with eating, toileting, dressing, or wheelchair assistance, are not provided. Guests requiring these services must travel with a companion capable of providing the necessary support.
Please note that embarkation and disembarkation facilities may not be accessible for wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, or similar mobility devices.
Each itinerary includes mix of walking each day to enjoy each destination and the on-shore experiences on offer as outlined in your itinerary. This includes but is not limited to walking from a coach to an iconic sightseeing experience, walking to a restaurant, and walking tours and more.
Each destination and its terrain can also vary. For example in some historic cities in Europe there can be uneven terrain and cobblestones which are part of the charm and beauty of these centuries old destinations and their historic centers. Some destinations may have steep inclines or steps and there are times when more walking is required than others.
Bringing a CPAP Machine On a Trafalgar River Cruise
Guests can bring your CPAP machine on their river cruise. This is considered medical equipment and is considered a separate piece of luggage in addition to the one piece of hold luggage included in the river cruise allocation. Please note that CPAP machines can come in different sizes. Please let your Travel Specialist know when you book your tour and outline if it can be carried on as hand luggage.
Please note that it is the guests' responsibility to check that their CPAP machine can operate on the voltage on the ship. Electrical current onboard is 220V (European standard), and each stateroom and suite includes one 110V outlet. Guests are also required to pack any travel adaptors and a power converter if necessary. We also recommend bringing an extension cable in case there is no socket located close to the bedside.
Flying with a CPAP Machine: Please note that GET and Trafalgar are unable to provide advice on your airline policies when it comes to CPAP Machines. It is recommended that you contact the airline with plenty of notice before travel to inform them as well as ensure you understand and comply with their specific CPAP policies. This includes informing Airport Security that you are travelling with a CPAP machine, as it will need to go through a separate screening process.
Traveling with Medications
It is important to research the regulations regarding medications in your destination country and determine what documentation may be required. Regulations vary by country, and GET and Trafalgar are unable to do this research on your behalf.
If you take medication or have a medical condition, ensure you bring enough medication for your entire trip, plus extra in case of travel delays.

Vaccinations Before You Travel
Consult your doctor before traveling to check if vaccinations or other health precautions are needed. While most destinations do not require mandatory vaccinations, requirements can change - always check before your trip. Check official guidelines for your destination and comply with all health and entry requirements.
What Options Are There for Keeping Fit and Working Out Onboard?
The Fitness Area is open 24 hours a day, giving you the flexibility to work out whenever it suits you. It is equipped with a selection of weights, yoga mats, and electronic fitness equipment. Light yoga and stretching sessions are also offered daily, providing a relaxed way to stay active during your river cruise.
Is Smoking and Vaping Allowed Onboard?
All public areas and staterooms onboard are non-smoking. Smoking and vaping is permitted only in designated areas on the aft section of the upper Sun Deck.
If you have purchased a pre or post-cruise extension package, hotels reserved for Trafalgar guests are non-smoking except in designated areas, and smoking is not permitted on sightseeing or transfer vehicles.

Electrical Currency on European Ships
Electrical current onboard is 220V (European standard), and each stateroom and suite includes one 110V outlet. We suggest you bring a multi-port USB charger, for charging multiple phones, tablets, and cameras from one outlet. Electrical plugs, voltage and outlets differ throughout the world. Trafalgar do not supply travel adapters for guests. We recommend bringing a universal travel adapter.
Using a Hair Dryer Onboard
Every stateroom has a hairdryer in the bathroom as well as shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, and handwash.
Connecting to the Internet & Wi-Fi
Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the ship, allowing you to stay connected during your journey. Please note that connectivity may be limited in remote areas or while transiting locks, and internet speeds may be slower than those at home.
