Walk down steep Shipquay Street, with its elegant Georgian houses, to the Gothic Guildhall. Continue around the coast to the amazing Giant's Causeway, then take a spectacular drive along the Antrim coast road to your hotel, that overlooks the sea at the head of Ballygally Bay.

Service rating : Our guide - Robbie Joyce - was very helpful with suggestions and any problems that happened. I had left an important medication at home. Through Robbie's knowledge and effort, I was able to get enough pills to make the trip enjoyable. He knew all the "out of the way" spots for shopping and new experiences. He made the journey worth the airplane trip over and back home. Enjoyed listening to his Scottish accent too. Our driver Jason Croton must have been a magician. He could squeeze that huge bus through tiny streets and archways and then back it up for parking. The places where we stayed each night were delightful - warm with the heat wave - but that is how it is in the Isles. The trip was excellent.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Our Travel Directors are simply the best. We are so happy that you enjoyed Ireland and Scotland and the expertise of Robbie Joyce. We will be sure to share your comments with him. Thank you for taking the time to write!

Service rating : For the most part, purchasing the trip was easy. Making flight arrangements was a little more difficult. Need to involve the traveler in seat selection and not just assign seats. In our case, we wanted comfort class and it took awhile to get to the right person.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you for your feedback. Since seat assignments are under the control of the airlines themselves and subject to change, we cannot guarantee specific seats on any flight, but are always happy to communicate any specific requests to the airlines. We are glad to see that you were able to upgrade to Comfort Class.

Vacation : For a tour titled "Best of Ireland and Scotland," this tour left a lot to be desired. Too much bus time. Way too much time at minor attractions and not enough time at major attractions. Many major attractions were just "drive byes." Three years ago we spent four hours in St. Andrews. This year we were allotted one and a half hours and that was supposed to include lunch! The hour and a half at Ardgowan was pure TORTURE!! Who wants to listen to someone babble on for an hour about his ancestors. I can get that on line!!!
Response from Grand European Travel:
This particular trip does cover quite a bit of ground and unfortunately, the only way to travel between cities is by Motor Coach. We will certainly share your suggestions with Insight Vacations' Quality Control team and thank you for bringing them to our attention.

That saved us several hours of travel. Thank you for that. Wish they could have done that on our return We had a 4 hour layover in Seattle on the way back. Seattle is a 45 min trip from Portland.

The tour itself covers a lot of ground, but you get to see the highlights and enjoy some great experiences with your fellow travelers along the way. The hotels were first class, and check-in and check-out was very efficient. Just wish we would have had more time at some of the more popular attractions.

Service rating : Grand European is a fabulous travel company with such a large variety of trips and great service. The paperwork and travel documents are very detailed and very informative for our trips.
Vacation : We loved Scotland & Ireland but were very disappointed with a couple of hotels. Mainly in Dryman out of Glasgow. Room so small we had to put suitcases in the bathtub at night in order to get to bathroom at night. My husband being 6’5 could barely stand in the room. Whole night was awful! Definitely not up to Insight standards!! Worst we have ever stayed on a GET tour. breakfast was awful the next morning which makes me rate this hotel as a minus 5! Disappointed we were not staying in Glasgow as we had thought. Too many optional dinners and tours. Made for an lot of extra expenses. Dune castle should have been included in the tour because it was not worth the money we spent. Bright side of the trip was our FANTASTIC tour director Cheryl Duke and bus driver first half of trip Jerry! Alan our 2nd driver was not as professional and not very neat. Bus not kept as clean as our first driver Jerry.

Room was so small could not even have suitcases open to be able to get to bathroom! We should have been in Glascow hotel in town. Definitely not even a one star hotel. Breakfast in Dryman hotel had 4 tour groups in dining room at same time & ran out of all food when we were there to eat. Awful experience. Definitely not up to a Insight standard.

Service rating : Our guide was very knowledgeable about all of the history between the two countries. It was a pretty fast-paced tour. Meals were fine. When we arrived at a two day stay the accommodations in my room we're not up to par. The shower did not work and there was no attempt to fix it while we were there. One luck of the draw for a bad room I understand. I had several less than appropriate rooms.
Vacation : Other than several bad rooms, it was a fine trip. I over looked the garbage in two different hotels. One of the two nights stay we had a very small room way at the other end of the building. Our friends had a lovely large room along with the rest of the travelers in our group. In Edinburgh again we were in the older part of the building. It would be nice to rotate the less than desirable rooms between all of the travelers.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Ireland and Scotland must have a current passport that is valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering either country.

  • The currency in the republic of Ireland is the Euro (€).  Northern Ireland and Scotland use the Pound (£). While it’s a good idea to bring some cash with you, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate when you arrive at your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Ireland. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • One of the most enjoyable parts of traveling is sampling the local cuisine.  Culinary experiences to try in Ireland include a full Irish breakfast, a visit to a chip shop, and hearty lunch at a good local pub.  And be sure to sample Irish national specialties including Irish stew, coddle, potato bread, corned beef and whiskey cake.

Scottish cuisine goes beyond traditional haggis, porridge, and whiskey.  Other specialties s to try include kippers, fish and chips, Scotch broth, smoked salmon, sausages, shortbread, and Dundee cake.  For a meal that’s inexpensive and authentic, try a local pub meal with a pint of Scottish ale.

  • The weather in Ireland and Scotland is mild, damp, and quickly changeable. We suggest packing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Important items to bring include sturdy walking shoes and a waterproof jacket with a hood. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping in Ireland and Scotland is less common than in the U.S. When dining in a restaurant, it’s appropriate to leave a tip of up to 5-10 percent of the bill.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity. We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
