  • U.S. citizens traveling to Italy must have a current passport that is valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering Italy.

  • The currency in Italy is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some euros for when you first arrive in Italy, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate when you arrive in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Italy. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • While Italy is most famous for pizza and pasta, few travelers are aware of just how varied the country’s culinary offering actually are. In fact, each of the 20 regions has its own distinctive cuisine. Traditionally, lunch (pranzo) is the most substantial meal of the day. A full meal consists of antipasto (starter), a primo piatto (pasta, rice or soup), a secondo piatto (meat or fish) with a side, or contorno (vegetable or salad), then frutta (fresh fruit). Finish with espresso and maybe a limoncello or grappa.  Wine is usually served with the meal, accompanied by mineral water. Tap water is safe to drink, but not always tasty. We recommend you buy bottled mineral water. ‘Acqua non potabile’ means the water is not safe to drink.  Find out about some local specialties to try in Italy’s top destinations below.

    Florence

Food in Florence is simple and humble, and relies on the fresh ingredients of the surrounding Tuscan countryside. Many of the local recipes have evolved from peasant dishes to international favorites. Bread is an important staple in Florentine cooking, and is featured in everything from antipasti (appetizers) such as bruschetta to traditional main dishes. Panzanella is a popular summer salad prepared with day old crusty bread and tomatoes.  Papa al pomodoro is a delicious soup made with bread, tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, and herbs.  You’ll also find a variety of dishes featuring white beans, including the hearty ribollita soup.  But the flagship of Florentine cuisine remains the famous bistecca alla fiorentina (T-bone steak).  For a sweet finish, meals are topped off with traditional cantuccini (almond cookies) and the local vin santo dessert wine.

    Venice

A visit to Venice offers an opportunity to discover a variety of truly unique gastronomic traditions.  Venetians have a long-standing tradition of eating cicchetti, small bites similar to Spanish tapas. You can enjoy a variety of these before lunch or dinner, paired with a glass of local wine at restaurants and bars around town. Other common dishes include polenta, risotto with peas, salted cod, sardines, and local bigoli pasta.

    Rome

Roman cuisine is deeply rooted in the past. Despite the city’s imperial history, the food in Rome and the surrounding Lazio region is anything but refined.  Humble pasta dishes such as carbonara, amatriciana, aglio e olio (garlic and olive oil) and cacio e peppe (pecorino cheese and pepper) are local favorites served in trattorias around town. Other foods to try in Rome include pizza, a variety of fritti (fritters) made with everything from salted cod to zucchini flours, stewed oxtail, suppli (rice and Bolognese sauce croquettes) and sharp pecorino cheese. For dessert, try crostata di ricotta (Italian cheesecake) or zeppole (donuts).

  • In Italy, the weather changes very quickly, with temperatures varying from morning to night. We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • At bars and restaurants, tipping is less common or generous as in the U.S. When dining out, it’s appropriate, although not required, to leave an extra euro or two for your waiter.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity. We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 48 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.

Service rating : Wonderful tour of Italy. I would highly recommend Grand European. They are the best. Everything was taken care of. We never had to be concerned about anything. Early entry into the Sistine Chapel was an added plus. Our tour director was amazing.
Vacation : The best value ever. We could never have accomplished all that we did if we traveled independently

Service rating : Overall, it did not meet my expectations...
Vacation : The price of the land tour was reasonable; however, we had to add the plane fare, and also the cost of the optional tours --whose price were not made available beforehand. The entire trip could be pricey when taking all the optional tours! As a side comment, the time spent on the motorcoach was too long during the day...

Vacation : All the extra tours were just fantastic. We got to experience a little more of Italy which was just wonderful. We especially enjoyed the dinners in unexpected venues. So much fun.

Service rating : Trafalgar lived up to their name! The hotels were top-notch 4-5 stars. We saw so much and moved so fast that it was almost a blur. I can't say enough about our tour director, Alissa, who was tireless, friendly to all, very professional, and knowledgeable. Her most valuable and appreciated service to all of us was her kindness and genuine caring about each one. That kind of personality that makes you want to travel again with her as director. Her finding me the right plug-in, so I could charge my phone as well as use my oxygen was a godsend, since the plug that Trafalgar sent didn't work! All of the specialists at the main exhibits were good, except for the Vatican guide who was rude, showed visible and verbal irritation at some of us that were trying to keep up, which was difficult with over 40 people. The Pompeii guide did not give us nearly the information and/or stories that I'd heard before on previous trips. My favorite hotels were the hotel at Sorrento, Johanna Park, and Grand Albergo Austria in Venice. I have found "comfortable, homey with friendly staff" to always be my favorites. My husband and I loved the Sorrento Farmhouse dinner and learned what good mozzarella cheese really was! We enjoyed the cruise and dinner at Burano. The cruises and dinner in the Italian lakes was wonderful. One of our last dinners at the Tuscan vineyard was past amazing and memorable. This was my husband's and my first tour, and I'm glad we went with the best! You get what you pay for....
Vacation : The glass making in Venice was fascinating. I bought lovely necklaces, earring and my favorite, cobalt blue glasses with gold inlays.

Service rating : The tour guide, Dina, was wonderful; the coach was very comfortable; the seat rotation policy allowed us to get to know everyone on the tour; but the optional experiences were a little pricey, and not often worth what we paid.
Vacation : We experienced a great overview of Italy and its differences in culture and food. We saw all the "high-lights" that every tourist expects to see and had time to explore lesser known attractions if we so chose. The meals were fine, but not exceptional.

I would only use trafalga in the future and would look for the same travel director.

Service rating : I would definitely book through Grand European again. I liked the BOGO option for the flights, the trip offerings are great and teaming up with Trafalgar became a perfect travel experience.
Vacation : This tour by Trafalgar is perfect to see and experience the BEST OF ITALY! Our Tour Director (Franco) was an expert director with years of experience and knowledge. His tour was so well organized; no lines to wait in, even when touring the optional excursions; treated us like family (Franco Family) and he provided professional advice and service for all of us. Our beautiful brand new motor coach and expert driver made the ride comfortable and enjoyable!

Service rating : There were 47 people on this trip. Group was too large. Have been on many trips and average was 38. I was shocked to see so many and will use other travel companies with tour limits in the future. Travel director did a great job but it was not easy moving around so many people.
Vacation : Too many people on tour. Also the included meals in our hotel were the same every time. Got really tired of 2 slices of pork with gravy and roasted potatoes for entrees.

Service rating : Even though we had previously been to England and Scotland we had never taken a "tour" of a European country. From beginning to end of planning for this trip, Grand European was considerate, kept us updated regarding all aspects of the trip, helpful, and extremely affordable! They had our tour booked with Trafalgar who provided an excellent tour Driver and Travel Director. We truly enjoyed our entire 14 day Best of Italy tour. We will definitely book through Grand European again.
Vacation : We purchased a 6 bottle case of wine from the optional restaurant in Florence which was shipped to us. We received this the day after we arrived home. Amazing.

Service rating : Trafalagar was priced reasonably and provided a truly lovely travel experience.
Vacation : Experienced travel director and associated personnel. Top of the line bus transportation. Being given travel converters and binder for passport and paperwork was a nice touch. Hotels were clean and centrally located. Breakfast buffets were enjoyable and satisfying while the majority of the dinners were fair at best. Everything was done in a timely manner. I thought "Be my Guest" while staying in Montecatini was a huge waste of time as food was terrible and would have preferred to explore the lovely town and shops. Personnel and waiters at Regina Cristina in Capri were miserable and dinner disappointing. Accomadations were acceptable. Loved the hotel in Venice. Perfect location near the Adriatic Sea. Inlaid wood factory was interesting but extremely expensive for the average consumer. The weaving factory was a pleasure to go to, but not a great selection of wares. Pino was excellent, caring and very organized. The bus driver was very professional. I would consider another tour with Grand European Travel.

This is our first time traveling on this kind of structured tour, that is why the good rating. We are both leaning towards excellent but have nothing to compare. We saw everything we were told we'd see and more. Wonderful trip.
Vacation : Saw everything we expected to see, plus. Local guides very knowledgeable and with info from our tour director also made touring sites more interesting. Felt a little rushed at a few of the stops, but we stayed on schedule and followed the itinerary very closely. Would recommend this tour for first time Italy travelers. Vacation : It was a vacation we dreamed about, and Grand European Travel and Trefalgar made that dream come to life. Our tour guide was beyond excellent, knowledgible, caring, and very concerned about or enjoyment and safety. Our driver was also excellent, ...friendly courteous, and a very safe driver. Our local specialists were all fantastic!! I not only saw things I've only seen in pictures, but these local tour guides taught us things about these great historical treasures that we never knew or read about. The hotels were all fantastic!!! My wife and I participated in all the extra excursions, and we we're very happy we did, they were all in formative and lots of fun. Only one extra had to be cancelled due to weather, and that was the boat trip to the grottoes on Capri. I do realize that Ge Tours can't control the weather. The captains of the boats recommended not going out due to rough seas, which they deemed not only a safety hazard, but a sea sick hazard as well. Another group from another tour company insisted they go out, we were standing by the dock, and in less than 10 minutes they were back, and not looking so well. Just another example of how Ge Tours looks out for their customers!!! Overall, we simply love it!! We will recommend Ge Tours to everyone, and if we every tour again, we will go directly to Ge Tours, knowing that our trip will be in the best of hands!!! Thank you for seeing we had such a wonderful tour, and for giving us so many wonderful memories!!! d gable,
