Overview

Trace the walls of ancient capitals, pretty Adriatic seaside retreats and natural icons like Plitvice and Lake Bled – an enchanting journey to Trafalgar Highlights in Croatia and Slovenia.

Travel to Europe often requires an overnight flight. Please arrange for flights to arrive on or before Day 1.

  1. Embark on an off-the-beaten-track discovery of Croatia. On arrival at Zagreb Airport, transfers will operate at 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. Guests arriving later should make their own way to the hotel. The capital city of Zagreb is your springboard to an enchanting journey through what was once a troubled region and is today a land of diverse cultures and traditions. Meet your Travel Director and fellow travelers this evening for a Welcome Reception and evening orientation drive.

    meal(s):Welcome Reception
    hotel:Westin
  2. Spend the morning exploring Zagreb with a Local Specialist before traveling through romantic landscapes to the lakeside resort town of Bled, where we'll stay the next two nights.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Park
  3. Enjoy some free time today to connect with this enchanting setting, but not before you sail on Lake Bled's crystal-clear waters to Bled Island to view its Church of the Assumption. Spend the rest of the day exploring on your terms, or consider joining an Optional Experience to Slovenia's largest glacier lake, ascending Mt. Vogel by cable car for inspiring views.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Park
  4. We leave the beauty of Bled behind for one of Europe's smallest capitals. Embark on an orientation tour of Ljubljana this morning, admiring its Old Town, bridges and Castle. We continue to the seaside resort of Opatija.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Continental
  5. The Croatian fishing port of Rovinj is our destination this morning. Dive into culture as we stop to taste the world-famous and delicious Istrian white truffles. We'll join a Local Specialist to wander through the old town and witness its Mediterranean influences. We return to Opatija for some time on our own. See the statuesque nymph, her hand outstretched to cradle a seagull as a symbol of this region, and admire the belle-époque architecture. Savor the beautiful seaside setting and local Mediterranean flavors as you connect with locals at a traditional Be My Guest dinner with a family in Opatija.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with wine
    hotel:Continental
  6. The extraordinary natural beauty of Plitvice takes center stage today as we embark on a guided walking tour. Admire the cascade of spectacular waterfalls and crystal-clear waters reflecting green, grey and blue against the lush landscapes. Enjoy dinner at your hotel against this picture-perfect backdrop.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Jezero
  7. Today, we visit the walled island of Trogir. The stone town is connected to the mainland and the island of Čiovo by bridges and will delight lovers of art, and Renaissance, Baroque Romanesque architecture. We leave the coast and journey to Split, where we'll join a Local Specialist for a sightseeing tour, which includes entry into Diocletian's Palace, built for the emperor's retirement.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Atrium
  8. Delve into centuries of heritage on this free day in Split. Consider a full-day Optional Experience to the beautiful island of Hvar. Ascend the bell tower for magnificent views of the sprawling terracotta roofs and white marble façades that edge onto the Adriatic. Or savor the city's delicious gastronomy at cafés tucked away in hidden lanes.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Atrium
  9. The terracotta rooftops of Dubrovnik beckon, but not before we stop to admire the extraordinary walled city of Ston, with its dramatic views and laidback fishing village atmosphere. Visit Europe's oldest salt pans and hear how salt has been harvested here since ancient times. We continue to Dubrovnik where you can wander through the colorful lanes or maybe climb the medieval city walls.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Grand Park
  10. Tread in the footsteps of Lord Byron and George Bernard Shaw, who were intoxicated by the allure of Dubrovnik. With your Local Specialist, you'll embark on a sightseeing tour past the Rector's Palace, Onofrio's Fountain and the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries, before spending time on your own. As our journey comes to an end, join your travel companions for a Farewell Dinner.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Farewell Dinner
    hotel:Grand Park
  11. Our time together comes to an end this morning after breakfast. Return transfers will arrive at Dubrovnik Airport at 5 am, 9 and 11:30 am. Conditions apply.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Croatia, Austria and Slovenia must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering these countries.

  • The currency in Austria and Slovenia is the Euro (€) and in Croatia is the Kuna (kn). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive in Europe, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Croatia, Austria and Slovenia. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Croatian cuisine is hearty, fresh, and flavorful, and is a mix of local traditions and neighboring influences. Meals often begin with bread, cured meats and cheese.  Along the Dalmatian coast you’ll find a variety of seafood dishes and Mediterranean flavors like rosemary, oregano, sage, lemon, and olive oil. For an authentic coastal meal try octopus peka and scampi na buzaru (scampi cooked in garlic, tomato and white wine). Further inland you might like to try the rich Štrukli (baked cheese in pastry dough). Pizza and pasta dishes are also ubiquitous. For dessert, try palačinka, a kind of crêpe served with jam, chocolate sauce, and other decadent fillings. Croatia also produces high quality lagers and a selection of good wine.

Austrian cuisine is hearty and satisfying and reflects regional influences from Italy, Hungary, Germany and the Balkans. Try a variety of sausages including the popular Wiener Schnitzel and Viennese specialties such as gulasch (goulash) and apfelstrudel (apple strudel).

Slovenian cuisine is greatly influenced by neighboring countries. You’ll find everything from Italian dishes such as pizza, pasta, gnocchi and risotto to Hungarian specialties like goulash and beef stew.

  • We suggest that you pack a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. It’s important to bring comfortable walking shoes and a waterproof jacket. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping is less common in Europe than in the U.S. When dining out, a service fee is sometimes included in the bill. It’s appropriate to leave up to 10 percent gratuity for good service.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
