Overview

Circle north, south, east and west to see the Pied Piper's Hamelin, medieval Rothenburg and Munich's Glockenspiel. Explore Neuschwanstein, and gain insights into a 'divided Germany.'

Travel to Europe often requires an overnight flight. Please arrange for flights to arrive on or before Day 1.

  1. Welcome to Frankfurt! On arrival at Frankfurt Airport transfers will operate at 9:30 am, 12 noon and 2:30 pm. Guests arriving later should make their own way to the hotel. Savor a brief opportunity to see the sights on your own before meeting your Travel Director this afternoon for an orientation of the medieval Römerplatz and dynamic financial district. This evening, we enjoy a Welcome Reception with our fellow travelers, including a light meal and welcome drink to kick off our discovery of the best of Germany

    meal(s):Welcome Reception
    hotel:Sheraton Offenbach
  2. Resist the alluring calls of Lorelei and board your leisurely cruise along the Rhine. Glide past vineyard-clad hills, stopping to connect with locals for a Be My Guest lunch at a 13th-century castle perched high above the river valley. Share stories of knights and feuding lords and ladies over lunch before continuing to Cologne. Here, we will view the Gothic spires of its magnificent cathedral during our orientation of the city.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    hotel:NH Collection Mediapark
  3. Journey through the lush green landscape of Lower Saxony, stopping in the legendary town of Hamelin, immortalized in the medieval tale of the Pied Piper. We continue to the international trade center of Hamburg, where we'll join our Travel Director for an orientation tour of the city's iconic sights. Spend the rest of the day at leisure exploring the city's seafaring heritage. Wander along the trendy Mönckebergstrasse, visit one of the city's brewhouses or consider a guided cruise along the city's waterways and discover why Hamburg is called Germany's 'Gateway to the World.'

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Crowne Plaza City Alster
  4. Follow the picturesque Elbe Valley from Hamburg, crossing the former ‘Iron Curtain' to the historic city of Berlin, whose once-turbulent history has shaped its rebirth as a charismatic capital city. Join your Local Specialist to explore the iconic landmarks of a unified Berlin. See the neo-Renaissance Reichstag, Tiergarten, Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden Boulevard and Kurfürstendamm, renowned for its shopping and entertainment. Enjoy some time at leisure this afternoon to explore the city on your terms. Relax with an Ebbelwei on the Friedrichstrasse and watch the world go by.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Hilton
  5. Dive into culture and ascend the iconic Berlin TV Tower for 360° views of the city and Spree River. You have some free time to see the remnants of the Berlin Wall, visit the infamous Checkpoint Charlie or join an Optional Experience to the District of Potsdam, the former Prussian royal seat, for sightseeing and an unforgettable meal.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  6. A short drive south brings us to Dresden, the ‘Florence on the Elbe,' where we'll hear about the city's restoration following its devastation during World War II as you admire its beautiful Baroque façades. meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Pullman Newa
  7. Visit the village of Mödlareuth, which inherited the moniker of 'Little Berlin' due to its wall separating 'east' and 'west.' Gain insights into a divided Germany at its open-air museum and see a section of the original wall with its security features. This afternoon, arrive in the Bavarian city of Nuremberg, once the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire and today the economic, social and cultural capital of Franconia. See the mighty castle ramparts and St. Sebald's Cathedral on your orientation tour of the city, then spend the rest of your evening at leisure indulging in grilled Nürnberger and sauerkraut.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Maritim
  8. Stroll through the narrow lanes of Rothenburg—its beautiful medieval center seemingly frozen in time and encircled by a fortified town wall that remains intact after centuries. See the beautiful Market Square, lined with half-timbered houses, and the Old Town Hall before following parts of the Romantic Road through villages and countryside to Munich. See the Olympic Stadium, built as the main venue for the 1972 Olympic Games, before checking in to your hotel.

This morning, we tread in the footsteps of shy King Ludwig II visiting his Neuschwanstein Castle, built as a retreat for the king to withdraw from public life. We continue through the magical countryside to the Black Forest, whose mystical landscape inspired fantasy and fiction from the famous Brothers Grimm. This evening, we dine at our hotel.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Best Western Hofgut Sternen
  11. Witness the centuries-old craft of cuckoo clock making as you dive into culture in Heidelberg. Service rating : All too often hotels were not in the center of town and required taxi or subway to get to town. Charge us more for centrally located hotels. The Pullman hotel in Dresden was simply awful, with the shower in the center of the room. Shame on you for selecting this hotel. On the positive side, the Martim hotels were fantastic.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you for your comments. We hope that, despite your dissatisfaction with hotel locations, you were able to enjoy your trip to Germany. Please note that for your next trip, we do have Premium options with more centrally located hotels.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Germany must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering Germany.

  • The currency in Germany is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive in Germany, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Germany. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Traditional German cuisine is rich and delicious.  Try specialties including a variety of bratwurst with sauerkraut, cold cuts, spätzle and potato dumplings.  For dessert you cannot miss the world famous Black Forest Gateau.   Beer is a big part of German culture; sample a variety of German offerings including pilsner, Kölsch and sour beers.  In Frankfurt, try the local cider (Apfelwein).   Wine is also popular throughout Germany, and world-class whites are produced in the Rhine and Mosel regions.

  • We recommend packing layers to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress.  It’s important to bring comfortable walking shoes and a waterproof jacket with a hood. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Service and VAT are typically included in the price of food at restaurants in Germany.  When leaving a tip, it is appropriate to simply round up your bill or leave up to 10 percent.   Rather than leaving your money on the table, be prepared to leave it with your waiter when you pay your bill.  If you are expecting change, simply tell them how much you will need back after gratuity.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
