  • U.S. citizens traveling to Spain and Portugal must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens visiting Spain and Portugal.

  • The currency in Spain and Portugal is the Euro (€).  While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Spain and Portugal. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Spain offers a delicious selection of cured hams, chorizo sausage, seafood, cheeses, and more.  Try traditional dishes such as tortilla española (Spanish omelet), paella, and desserts such as flan, churros, and Catalan cream. For a quick lunch at a reasonable price, stop by a café or food cart for a bocadillo, a traditional Spanish sandwich made with baguette-style bread, ham and cheese.  In the evening, try a selection of tapas – small bites served in bars and restaurants that can be enjoyed as an appetizer or a meal.

With Portugal’s long coastline, seafood is featured prominently on their menus. Popular dishes include sopa de mariscos (a shellfish soup) and bacalhau (dried codfish), and Portuguese grilled chicken prepared with chili, garlic and olive oil. For dessert, don’t miss out on the famous pastéis de nata custard pastry or arroz dolce (rice pudding) and a glass of port wine.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase.  This will also give you many options for how to dress in Spain and Portugal’s varying climates. It’s a good idea to bring a lightweight scarf to wear at religious sites and in the evening when temperatures cool off. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping in Spain and Portugal is much less common than in the U.S. When dining out, it’s appreciated, although not required, to leave a few extra euros for your server, and up to 10 percent for particularly good service.  Leave your tip on the table rather than adding it to your credit card slip to ensure that your waiter receives it.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 48 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.

Service rating : Very good selection. As is typical of travel guides, stop to let the stragglers catch up but then takes off again before the stragglers can catch their breath. Found it very taxing trying to keep up with the group.
Vacation : saw so many marvelous places.

Vacation : Optional excursions should have been part of the tour instead of add ons. If it's worth seeing, it should be included in the itinerary. No other tour operator we've used did this. It added $500.00/each to cost of tour.

Service rating : Insight Vacations ran the tour and the bus was very comfortable and tour director very knowledgeable and professional. The only hitch was the amount of time between landing, customs, and our connecting flight home. You booked with only 1:45 minutes. We really needed 2-1/2 to 3 hours inbetween in order to make our flight (which we did not - nor the next one).
Vacation : Great tour and hotels. 99% of the stops were great. As always we booked additional tours but on retrospect, could have used the free time in some of the fabulous cities.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will certainly review our connection times for flights moving forward. We hope to see you on another trip very soon!

Vacation:
Service rating : Good program, well organized trip
Vacation : Well organized trip and a great tour director made it possible to get the best of both countries in the available time. City tours, special events (flamenco night), wine tasting (Porto, Málaga, Valencia), many little treats (marzipan, sweet and salty pastries, etc) the visited area is known for, history lessons during long bus drives helped to understand the culture and taste of the countries.

Service rating : Did not receive aisle seats even though was assured by the travel agent. Claustrophobia is an issue. American Airlines had three stops back to the USA for a total of 16 hours in the air. Use an airline that flies more directly.
Vacation : Added charges for routine side trips. I understand payment for meals but not side trips.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We're sorry to hear about the trouble with your flights. Our records show that you preferred window seating on all of your flights, which is what we requested for you. We always do our best to work with the airlines on seat requests but ultimately they are under control of the airline itself and cannot be guaranteed. We hope that despite the flight issues, you were able to enjoy your trip. We appreciate your feedback.

Vacation : Very hectic tour. The tour guide was defensive and didn't listen- only talked. Tried so hard to be funny, it was wearing.

Service rating : Suggestion - since this was advertised with AARP, it would be helpful to show what parts of the tours are on cobblestones, many steps, and include hours of walking and/or standing. Those with mobility problems sometimes held up the group and complained that they didn't know there would be so much physical effort. While we were able, I did not want to see others uncomfortable. Look at how Oceania Cruise rates their excursions with little walking icons. They are most helpful.
Vacation : Bus travel can be exhausting, but I found the trip exhilarating! I was most apprehensive about traveling via bus. As a sometimes nervous rider, I was completely at ease throughout the trip. Our driver, Alberto, made the travel very comfortable. He was the smoothest driver - and personable and very professional. He not only took his job very seriously, he enjoyed his job and he made every effort to make sure we were comfortable and enjoyed our journey.

Service rating : Have a 'personal' rep (Kari) that assists in making all our special arrangements for extra days before and after the main tour, as well as airline arrangements. Her knowledge of individual tour details is invaluable. GET is our first choice when deciding on a new adventure.
Vacation : Tour was conducted by Insight, not GET, which we prefer. The personal experiences of our tour guide, Felipe Oliviera, were a highlight of the trip. Shopping experiences left much to be desired; lots of mass produced tourist stuff, few stops with hand crafted items. Loved Obidos!
Response from Grand European Travel:
We appreciate your repeat business so much. We will be sure to share your comments with Kari and thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

Service rating : The hotels did not disappoint........they were at least 4-star and very comfortable. The motor coach was very comfortable. Our tour director - Daniel Ferguson - and our bus driver - Rui - took good care of the group.
Vacation : Our trip to Spain/Portugal was actually an Insight tour run thru Grand European. The "Arrival Information in Madrid" in the Tour Information letter needs to be reworked. We were surprised that there was no one there to meet us immediately upon arrival. The information should read as follows: "Upon arrival please pass thru passport control and collect your luggage in Baggage Claim. In Terminals 1 and 2 make your way to the MEETING POINT in the Arrivals Hall. In Terminal 4 make your way to the Arrivals Hall and wait in front of the cafeteria directly to the left as you enter the hall. A tour representative will meet you shortly before the Insight Vacations tour coach departs at 09:00, 11:00, 13:30, and 16:00 and approximately 30 minutes later from Terminal 4 on the FIRST day of the tour only." Also, call attention to the fact that the Tour Director's phone number is listed on the back of the luggage identification tag provided by Insight. The rating of the tour as "Comfortable" maybe should be listed as "Moderate" for those over 70!! Lots of steps and long, steep uphill walks. The Day 12 visits to Mijas and to the Alhambra were really challenging. The tour coach could no longer get to the central square in Mijas due to road renovations. This necessitated very steep uphill and downhill climbs. Perhaps a substitute for Mijas can be found until the construction is completed. The Alhambra was an endurance test for 2-1/2 hours of walking up and down steep stairs in 100 degree heat. We had to show our tickets 4 times, which indicates to me that perhaps more abbreviated tours of the Alhambra are available. We would be in favor of a more abbreviated tour. Other than these few glitches, it was all good and we enjoyed ourselves. Hope to travel with Grand European again.

Service rating : One should not expect to pay additional money while on the trip to "better" enjoy the experience. Optional items should have been detailed in the brochure so you could decide whether to pay for them in the beginning or not. There isn't any mention of optionals in the catalogue.

Service rating : I was disappointed in the initial consultant who arranged the tour. She seemed unwilling to understand our requests for airline routing. When we asked about transportation from the airport to the hotel in Madrid she responded with 'you're on your own'; even though she must have known that there would be another Insight tour leaving the airport at the time we would be there. Another tour director at the airport welcomed us to ride with them to the hotel. This lady exemplified the friendly, courteous, professionalism of the entire tour staff in Spain.
Vacation : Everything was great. The sights, the hotels, the meals were superb. Most seats on the bus had so much leg room one couldn't reach the footrest without adjusting it. The pace was strenuous, but it had to be to cover everything; and I can't think of anything I would want to give up for a more leisurely pace.

Service rating : We travel with Grand European Travel because we know we can always count on GET to give us the best -- guides, bus drivers, hotels, meals. Our guide, Fillipo Concollato, was probably the best guide we've ever had. He was thorough, took care of details without any fuss, friendly, great attitude, came forward with little extras, very professional -- an all around young man who clearly enjoys his job and all travelers benefited from it!
Vacation : Took us to all the places that are appealing to see and experience! Great trip!

Vacation : The tour visited excellent sites throughout Spain and Portugal. I personally enjoyed the walking to and around the various sites. The food was excellent at the preplanned restaurants--including the breakfasts at our hotels. I enjoyed seeing the paella demonstration and eating "it" for dinner. The port and cava demonstrations/tours of sites was very well done. We enjoyed the tastings.

Service rating : Excellent. Tour director was amazing--Anita Baker. This was our second trip with GE/Insight (tho we were not recognized as a repeat at the celebration). Itinerary was the only one that included all cities we wanted to visit. Almost all of the inlcuded and optional trips were great--only the flamenco night disappointed. I think that vendor is taking GE/Insight for granted--rude service, bad meal, not a good example of this classic dance. Fado, same sort of crowded tourist venue was lovely and great.
Vacation : Would have liked ten minutes more to shop in Alhambra bookstore--those items not available in other areas near hotel. The fish dinner on Tagus was good but not great. Would have liked to at least drive by the house of Garcia Lorca. Guide was wonderful--we were caught up in San Isidro traffic in Madrid and she made a decision to .change some of the route to help us out--excellent thinking, great move. We missed the main fountains at night, but hey, we saw fireworks
