Service rating : I booked at the last minute and decided I shouldn;t go 6 hours later. Your company would not let me cancel. Said there would be no refund because Insight had already booked me on the trip, Yet when I arrived to my tour in Berlin, the tour director said they had been told that I had cancelled. The tour was awesome.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We do apologize for the confusion.  You did book and pay just 24 hours prior to the start of the trip so we acted quickly to make sure your reservation was secured. When you decided to cancel, everything had already been arranged and paid.  We do hope that once you arrived, you enjoyed yourself and the German Christmas Markets.

Vacation : The Christmas Markets of Germany was an excellent tour. The tour was well organized and supremely executed. Hildegard, our tour director, was top-notch. Werner, our driver, was excellent. The itinerary was fabulous. Not only did I get to enjoy the magic of the markets, but I also learned so much about the cities we visited.

Service rating : The trip was great. We had an excellent guide. In addition to her usual duties as a guide, she accompanied us to the hospital when I fell and dislocated my shoulder. She worked with the hospital to help us through that difficult time. The only negative is we were told, at the time we signed up, the amount paid included transportation from the hotel to the airport at the end of the trip. When we arrived in Germany, we were told we would have to pay for our own transportation to the airport due to the time of our flight. We believe we paid for a transfer service that we never received.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you for your feedback. We will look in to the hotel/airport transfer issue right away and someone from our Guest Relations Department will be in touch with you shortly. Grand European Travel

Service rating : Mel Lennon of Insight Travel made the trip! Intelligent, great with people, good communicator and very organized. He made sure that everything ran smoothly.
Response from Grand European Travel:
The Christmas Markets are definitely the place to be in Germany during this time of year, and I'm so happy that you enjoyed the special atmosphere and the expertise of your travel Director Mel Lennon. I apologize for the confusion about having a roommate during your vacation, but I do hope that it did not affect your ability to enjoy the beautiful Christmas Markets. Happy Holidays! Vacation : When I signed up I asked for a roommate and was told that no one had requested one. Upon arrival to Berlin I found out that I did have a roommate and that she had requested one almost a year ago when she signed up for the trip. You need better communication or records for such matters. Group dinners were fun but the food was terrible in every case. The first night's dinner at the Intercontinental in Berlin being the worst of them all. I loved the historical and cultural commentary on the bus provided by Mel Lennon. I would seek out another trip led by him as he was that good.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Germany must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering Germany.

  • The currency in Germany is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive in Germany, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Germany. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Traditional German cuisine is rich and delicious.  Try specialties including a variety of bratwurst with sauerkraut, cold cuts, spätzle and potato dumplings.  For dessert you cannot miss the world famous Black Forest Gateau.   Beer is a big part of German culture; sample a variety of German offerings including pilsner, Kölsch and sour beers. Wine is also popular throughout Germany, and world-class whites are produced in the Rhine and Mosel regions.

  • We recommend packing layers to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress.  It’s important to bring comfortable walking shoes and a waterproof jacket with a hood. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Service and VAT are typically included in the price of food at restaurants in Germany.  When leaving a tip, it is appropriate to simply round up your bill or leave up to 10 percent.   Rather than leaving your money on the table, be prepared to leave it with your waiter when you pay your bill.  If you are expecting change, simply tell them how much you will need back after gratuity.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
