Travel to Europe often requires an overnight flight. Please arrange for flights to arrive on or before Day 1.

  1. Willkommen in Munich—a city of sophistication, old-world charm and of course all the flavors of Bavaria, which you will have an opportunity to explore before embarking on your lyrical sojourn through the Sound of Music. On arrival at Munich Airport transfers will operate at 10 am and 1 pm. Guests arriving later should make their own way to the hotel. Join your Travel Director and fellow travelers for a memorable Welcome Reception to kick-start your leisurely meander through Germany and Austria.

  2. Embark on a morning orientation tour past some of the city's most renowned sites, including the Opera House, Ludwigstrasse, Hofbräuhaus and Marienplatz, whose Glockenspiel delights visitors throughout the day with its re-enactment of 16th-century tales. Spend the rest of the day at leisure exploring the city's Old Town or consider an Optional Experience to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, the first of the Nazi camps established in Germany. This evening, connect with the city's rich beer heritage and consider a memorable night out at a local beer hall.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  3. Journey to Neuschwanstein Castle, built as a retreat for shy King Ludwig II to retire from public life. Continue through Bavaria, arriving in Oberammergau, where locals have performed the Passion Play every decade since 1634 to fulfill their vow after the village was spared from the grip of the Black Plague. We dine in our hotel this evening.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast. Dinner
    hotel:Wittelsbach
  4. The Tyrol mountains beckon today as you take a scenic drive to Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol. We spend a leisurely day against a magnificent Alpine backdrop, exploring the city's iconic sights. Admire Emperor Maximilian I's ornate Golden Roof and the Wilten Basilica, then maybe take a trip up the funicular for spectacular views, or see the Hofburg Palace. We return to Oberammergau this evening to indulge in true Bavarian hospitality.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  5. Spend a soul-stirring morning connecting with the astounding natural beauty of Berchtesgaden. Venture to Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, where you'll spend the next two nights at an exquisite Schloss intimately connected to the beloved 'The Sound of Music' movie.

    hotel:Schloss Leopoldskron
  6. Tread in the footsteps of musical greats today and join your Local Specialist for a sightseeing tour including views of Getreidegasse, the Salzburg Cathedral, and several of the locations used in the film 'The Sound of Music.' The rest of the day is yours to delve into the city's Mozart history or see the Domplatz, dominated by the Salzburg Cathedral. This evening, we connect with locals, joining the Klaushofer family and their resident bees on their Salzburg farm for a family Be My Guest dinner, not to mention delicious home-made cheese strudel.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
  7. Leave the sounds of Salzburg behind for lakeside Mondsee, where you'll visit Mondsee Abbey, the one-time Benedictine monastery that served as the church where Captain Von Trapp and Maria were married in 'The Sound of Music.' Journey along the mountains and lakes of Salzkammergut and pass the centuries-old salt mines that brought great wealth to the area.

  8. We enjoy an in-depth opportunity to dive into culture this morning during a guided tour of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Explore the heritage of the House of Habsburg, one of the most influential royal houses in Europe, and its exquisite collection of art in Kunstkammer, before the public gains access. Embark on a sightseeing tour of the city with a Local Specialist to admire its iconic landmarks and palaces. See the beautiful Opera House, Hofburg Palace, and the famous St. Stephen's Cathedral, with its colorful geometrically tiled roof. Spend the rest of the day on your own, indulging in the local Kaffee und Kuchen culture or consider an encounter with the city's rich musical heritage.

Vacation:
Service rating : Our tour director, Dr. Q. Moayad, was so very knowledgeable, nice, interesting & interested in each tour member, knew everyone by name, made every journey & stop an adventure, & went above & beyond to provide service to our group. I just can’t say enough good things about him. This trip was a celebration of mine & my husband’s 40th wedding anniversary. Dr. Q. presented us a cake one evening at dinner. Yes, I would recommend GET & “Dr. Q” to others & would consider traveling with them again myself! The Sound of Music tour with Dr. Q. was so much fun & I made so many wonderful memories.
Response from Grand European Travel:

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Germany and Austria must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering Germany or Austria.

  • The currency in Germany and Austria is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Traditional German cuisine is rich and delicious.  Try specialties including a variety of bratwurst with sauerkraut, cold cuts, spätzle and potato dumplings.  For dessert you cannot miss the world famous Black Forest Gateau.   Beer is a big part of German culture; sample a variety of German offerings including pilsner, Kölsch and sour beers.  In Frankfurt, try the local cider (Apfelwein).   Wine is also popular throughout Germany, and world-class whites are produced in the Rhine and Mosel regions.

Austrian cuisine is hearty and satisfying and reflects regional influences from Italy, Hungary, Germany and the Balkans. Try a variety of sausages including the popular Wiener Schnitzel and Viennese specialties such as goulash and apple strudel.

  • We recommend packing layers to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress.  It’s important to bring comfortable walking shoes and a waterproof jacket with a hood. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Service and VAT are typically included in the price of food at restaurants in Germany and Austria.  When leaving a tip, it is appropriate to simply round up or add up to 10 percent to your bill.   Rather than leaving your money on the table, be prepared to leave it with your waiter when you pay your bill.  If you are expecting change, simply tell them how much you will need back after gratuity.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
