The Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen is one of Denmark's most famous landmarks. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, this iconic bronze sculpture has been captivating visitors for over a century. Situated along the Langelinie promenade, the statue offers a glimpse into Denmark’s rich literary and artistic heritage.
The statue was unveiled in 1913 as a tribute to Andersen’s beloved story. Commissioned by Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen, it was sculpted by Edvard Eriksen. The model for the mermaid's face was ballet dancer Ellen Price, but the body was modeled after Eriksen's wife, Eline. Over the years, the statue has become a powerful symbol of Copenhagen and Danish culture.
Although seemingly a simple sculpture, The Little Mermaid represents themes of longing, transformation, and sacrifice. Andersen’s original tale is not a traditional fairy tale with a happy ending but instead highlights the mermaid’s unfulfilled love and selfless devotion. The statue encapsulates this bittersweet essence, making it a poignant landmark for visitors.
As one of Denmark’s most visited attractions, The Little Mermaid embodies Danish storytelling and artistic craftsmanship. Seeing the statue in person allows travelers to connect with one of Denmark’s most beloved authors and appreciate the cultural significance of this timeless tale.
Situated along the harbor, the statue’s location offers stunning waterfront views and a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can take in the beauty of Copenhagen’s skyline while enjoying a leisurely walk along the promenade.
Despite its modest size—standing just 4 feet tall—The Little Mermaid is a favorite subject for photography. Its picturesque setting, combined with its cultural relevance, makes it a memorable stop for travelers seeking to capture an iconic moment in Copenhagen.
Home to the Danish royal family, Amalienborg Palace is another must-visit attraction near The Little Mermaid. The daily Changing of the Guard ceremony provides a fascinating glimpse into Danish royal traditions.
Just a short walk from The Little Mermaid, Rosenborg Castle is a stunning Renaissance castle built in the early 17th century. Visitors can explore its lavish rooms, impressive art collections, and the Danish crown jewels.
Located near the statue, Rundertaarn (Round Tower) is one of Copenhagen’s most unique historical sites. This 17th-century tower offers visitors a chance to walk up its spiral ramp for panoramic views of the city.
