Overview

Tales of Vikings and trolls await on this epic journey through Norway's ethereal natural splendor. Encounter the ‘King' and ‘Queen' of the Fjords, Olympic triumphs and the trading heritage of the Hanseatics as you answer the call of Norway's untamed wilderness and embrace Scandinavian sophistication

  1. Board your overnight flight to Europe (not included).
  2. Prepare for a spellbinding encounter with pristine nature – an untamed landscape of fjords, lakes and dense forests that begins in the understated capital of Oslo, set within beautiful natural surrounds. On arrival at Oslo Airport transfers will operate at 9.30am, 12pm, 2.30pm. Guests arriving later should make their own way to the hotel. Spend the day exploring its unique architecture and exquisite open spaces before joining your Travel Director and fellow travelers for a Welcome Reception to kick start your journey.

    meal(s):WR
    hotel:Clarion Collection Bastion
  3. Join your Local Specialist this morning for a sightseeing tour of this cultural capital. Enjoy views of the medieval fortress of Akershus, that overlooks Oslo's beautiful harbor, the Opera and 19th century Royal Palace. We finish our tour with a visit to the peculiar Vigeland Sculpture Park, proudly displaying the life's work of Gustav Vigeland. Spend the rest of the day at leisure people-watching over coffee in the charming Aker Bryge District or exploring the nation's seafaring heritage. Consider a visit to the Fram Polar Ship Museum and Viking Ship Museum to see the world's best-preserved Viking ships.
    meal(s):SB
  4. We meander along the picturesque shores of the Tyrifjord to the ski resort of Geilo with its scenic location at the foot of Hallingskarvet, before continuing across the Hardanger Plateau to Voringfoss, a breathtaking cascade of water that plunges impressively into the Måbødalen Canyon below. We continue to Hardangerfjord – its title as the ‘Queen of the Fjords' is well deserved and you'll have an opportunity to admire its deep blue waters as you travel along part of its shoreline. Later you will be arriving to Voss in the heart of Fjord Norway where you'll dine in your lakeside hotel.

    meal(s):SB, D
    hotel:Park Hotel Vossevangen
  5. A short, picturesque drive along lakes and fjords will take us to the Capital of Fjords, Bergen. We learn about the city's fascinating Hanseatic heritage, enjoying an orientation tour past the 13th century Haakon's Hall and bustling fish market. Enjoy some free time to explore this colorful city before embarking on a Be My Guest dinner with the 5th generation Øvre-Eide family on their livestock farm in Norway that has been a working farm since the 1500s.

    meal(s):SB, BG
    hotel:Quality Edvard Grieg
  6. Delving straight back into Norway's inspiring natural landscapes, we continue to the ‘King of Fjords'. We brush the shoreline of Sognefjord, climbing into the surrounding mountains to see the impressive ice wall of the Boeya Glacier. Later, we arrive at Geiranger Fjord whose deep blue waters, surrounding snow-capped peaks and lush green landscapes provide a beautiful backdrop for the next two nights.

    meal(s):SB, D
    hotel:Union Authentic Accommodation
  7. The Geirangerfjord takes center stage today as we embark on an epic adventure to explore its depths. We begin our adventure on the Dalsnibba Skywalk for spectacular views of the fjord below before embarking on a scenic cruise past its tumbling waterfalls and snow-capped peaks. Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure and enjoy dinner in your hotel this evening.
    meal(s):SB, D
  8. We enjoy a scenic drive from Geiranger through the high peaks of the Dalsnibba Pass, arriving in Lom, the gateway to the Jotunheimen Mountains. Here we will visit a 12th century wooden Stave church, adorned with Runic inscriptions, paintings and carved dragon figures that are said to protect it against evil. We continue through the Gudbrandsdal Valley before arriving in Lillehammer, the proud host of the 1994 Winter Olympics.
    meal(s):SB
    hotel:Clarion Collection
  9. We return to Oslo where we have the rest of the day to explore the cityscape. Explore the open-air museum displaying Norwegian life from the 1500s to today, or take a guided tour of the Royal Palace. We spend our last evening together at a Farewell Dinner toasting to a memorable trip exploring the beauty of Norway.
    meal(s):SB, FD

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Norway must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering Scandinavia.

  •

Norway uses the Norwegian Krone.  While it’s a good idea to have some money on you while you travel, you’ll usually find better exchange rates in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Norway. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Scandinavian cuisine is rich and hearty.  Try a traditional ‘smørgasbord’ with a selection of meat, fish, salads, hot dishes, puddings and cheeses. Sample dishes prepared with a variety of seafood including smoked salmon, cod, herring, sardines and mackerel. Popular meats include reindeer, lamb and fowl. Coffee and milk are very popular, along with lager. Aquavit is the local spirit, and is usually served chilled. Wines and other spirits are imported products and are very expensive.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • When dining out it is appropriate to leave 5-10 percent gratuity if a service charge has not already been added to your bill.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend the equivalent of €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
