  • U.S. citizens traveling to Scotland must have a current passport that is valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering Scotland.

  • The currency in Scotland is the Pound (£). While it’s a good idea to bring some pounds for when you first arrive in Scotland, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Scotland’s culture is based on the country’s rich and colorful past, with a long-standing passion for festivals, myths, bagpipes, art, castles, and literature.  Highlights to explore include the city of Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Glasgow, and Stirling Castle.

  • Food and drink in Scotland goes far beyond haggis, porridge, and whiskey.  Other specialties to try include kippers, fish and chips, Scotch broth, smoked salmon, sausages, shortbread, and Dundee cake.  For a meal that’s inexpensive and authentic, try a pub meal with a pint of Scottish ale.

  • The weather in Scotland is mild, moist, and quickly changeable. We suggest packing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Important items to bring include sturdy walking shoes and a waterproof jacket with a hood. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping is less common in Scotland than in the U.S. When dining in a restaurant, it’s appropriate, although not required, to leave a tip of 5-10 percent.  Leave your gratuity on the table rather than adding it to your credit card receipt to ensure that your waiter receives it.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity. We recommend £2.50 per person/per day for your driver and £4.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 pounds per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 48 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.

Service rating : The tour director and coach driver were a pair to draw to on this trip. Excellent! My one concern was the late night dinners- not good for folks over 55.
Vacation : I would have prefered a local visit to a family's home. In our trip, the man and his family ran a business for tours. Not good.

Service rating : This was my first time traveling with grand European. The company was recommended, but my experience was not what I expected. Registration was smooth, organized and friendly, but that is where it ended.
Vacation : I was very excited to have this opportunity to travel to Scotland. The tour was off to a bad start, hours delayed with no backup plan in our origination hotel. I could understand a bit of delay if we were out on the road and not in a major city. Fortunately a different guide was along who took us on a walking tour after sitting around for hours while waiting for word on our broken bus. Due to the late start, visits were cancelled due to time and too much bus riding due to weather with no backup plan again. I understand driving is part of seeing the highlands, but I don't think we needed to waste two days in the hotel there. It would have been nice to have one day in Glasgow instead. The people I met and traveled with told me not to be discouraged with this trip, it was the worst they had been on. I don't know if I'll try another.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We are sorry to hear about your troubles with the motorcoach and the delays it caused. We can see that compensation was given by your Travel Director. Your suggestions are certainly appreciated and we will share them with our planning teams in London. THank you so much for taking the time to write.

Service rating : I found the company easy to work with and the trip was well run. We especially liked our tour guide. The depth and breadth of his knowledge was incredible and his sense of humor was a bonus. My only issue with the company was they did not cover our expense for getting to the hotel in Edinburg from the airport because we went a day early. I found out that those on our tour who had also come in a day early had that cost covered.
Vacation : We thoroughly enjoyed our vacation. The people and the country of Scotland are great.

Service rating : The tour of Scotland with Trafalgar was excellent. The travel arrangements done by European Tours was a disaster. The overnight flight put us at the Hotel by 9:30 am but no rooms were available until our Trafalgar guide arrived at 2 pm and got us in. On the return flight there was a 7 hour lay over which was HELL. Therefore, I will not use Grand European Travel again.

We are very sorry to learn of your disappointment with your flights. Our airline department always looks for the most direct routing available at the time of booking. While we would all love to be able to customize our arrival times, we are restricted to the airline schedules into a certain city. We apologize that your wait was longer than expected.

Service rating : Our trip was run by trafalgar. Unorganized, bus broke down, skipped events. We ate in a chimp house, a stable, and a dirty barn. We left without some of our group, even though we were constantly running late braise the director never explained the importance of promptness. Spent 2 nights in the middle of nowhere at a trafalgar hotel which was unclean. We will probably never travel with grand European again. This was our fourth trip. We have been sent with insight tours before and not had problems. Trafalgar was awful! The director was awful and I will not recommend these tours to anyone.
Vacation : Our tour director was not able to conduct a good tour. He never even learned anyone's names. It was a disaster. Missed many of the items on the itinerary and the make up visits were a joke. Mostly spending time at gift shops.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We are very sorry to hear about your disappointment with your trip to Scotland. Our quality control team is already working on the valuable feedback you have provided and looking at making changes. The bus breakdown was indeed an unforseen and unfortunate event. We do show that everyone was compensated for this inconvenience. Thank you for taking the time to share your comments. We do appreciate your time.
