Travel to Europe often requires an overnight flight. Please arrange for flights to arrive on or before Day 1.

  1. Welcome to Italy. After being greeted by your Travel Director at Milan's Malpensa Airport, your transfer departs at 9:30 am or 12:30 pm. Join your Travel Director at 5:30 pm and head to L'antica Riva, an elegant restaurant on the shores of Lake Como known for serving delicious fresh produce. Your Welcome Dinner provides the opportunity to mingle and get to know your fellow travelers over a pleasant evening.

    meal(s):Dinner with Wine
    hotel:Palace Hotel
  2. Head east to elegant Verona, legendary home of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. Enjoy a leisurely walk with your Travel Director, passing the well-preserved Roman Arena that is still used for opera performances. Stand beneath the balcony where the Capulet family is said to have lived and perhaps recite Shakespeare's immortal words. There is free time to explore or perhaps browse the local market before continuing to the glorious city of Venice.

    meal(s):Breakfast
    hotel:Hotel Indigo Venice - Sant'Elena
  3. Even for the experienced traveler, there can be no better joy than waking up in Venice. Transfer to Giudecca Island to witness the art of glassblowing with skilled artisans. Then appreciate the splendor of Venice as you cruise by Palladio's San Giorgio Maggiore to St. Mark's Square. Your Travel Director will explain the glorious history of La Serenissima, once one of the greatest trading centers of the world—its wealth and power is echoed by the riches of St. Mark's Basilica. See the Doge's Palace and its adjoining Bridge of Sighs. Spend the afternoon as you wish. Later, on your romantic gondola serenade, glide along the atmospheric canals while musicians set the mood with traditional songs.

    meal(s):Breakfast
    hotel:Hotel Indigo Venice - Sant'Elena
  4. Follow the fertile valley of the River Po, into the peaceful landscapes of Tuscany. Continue to Pisa to see the world-famous Leaning Tower in the Square of Miracles as well as the 11th-century cathedral and baptistery. Venture on to beautiful Florence—a treasure house of the Renaissance. On arrival, meet your art historian for a walk through the historic center. Visit the Accademia Museum to see Michelangelo's masterpiece statue, David. With your Local Expert, admire the marble-clad cathedral and baptistery, where Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise have been recreated in all their glory. Wander through Piazza della Signoria, an open-air gallery filled with Renaissance sculptures. In the evening, dinner is served with a selection of Tuscany's finest wines, presented by an expert sommelier who explains each of the wines being served.

    meal(s):Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
    hotel:Hotel Londra
  5. Florence is known for its quality leather goods and you will be privy to the secrets of traditional Florentine leatherwork when you visit a local workshop. The rest of the day is free for you to fully immerse yourself in the Tuscan capital. Perhaps shop for luxury goods at the markets around Santa Croce or relax and soak up the atmosphere in one of the many street cafes. Be sure not to miss the magnificent museums and galleries that house some of the most famous works of art in the world. In the evening, there is an opportunity to sample the true flavors of the region with a sumptuous Tuscan dinner, served with local wine.

    meal(s):Breakfast
    hotel:Hotel Londra
  6. Journey through the vineyards of the Chianti region passing Lake Trasimeno, the Italian Peninsula's largest lake and site of a great battle in ancient times against Hannibal and his war elephants. Continue up the foothills of the Apennine Mountains to reach delightful Assisi, a stone-built town spilling over the steep hillside. With a Local Expert, visit the tomb of St. Francis and see the beautiful frescoes by Giotto in the great basilica, before continuing along the valley of the River Tiber towards the Eternal City of Rome. In the evening, why not throw your coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure your return to the city?

    meal(s):Breakfast
    hotel:Veneto Palace Hotel
  7. In the morning enjoy the very best of the city's highlights including visiting the magnificent St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Afterward, enjoy some free time, perhaps joining a tour of the Colosseum? In the afternoon, gain exclusive fast-tracked VIP entry into the Vatican Museums with a Local Expert. Admire the Papal art collection and observe the stunning Museo Gregoriano Profano which documents various moments and themes in classical art, from Ancient Greece through to the late Imperial Roman age. You'll then enter the Sistine Chapel where you'll marvel at Michelangelo's masterpiece on its ceiling. After, dine in the Vatican's elegant Cortile del Giardino Quadrato, should weather permit, where you will enjoy incredible views of the cupola of St. Peter's during your private VIP Celebration Dinner.

Service rating : Italian Intermezzo was the most unguided guided tour we have ever taken. After an overnight in Como, we were on to Verona. We were taken to the area next to the arena and walked through the town to the balcony of Romeo and Juliet. At this point we were given 2 hours of 'free time'. This was far too much time as all there was to do was shop. Next it was on to Venice and taken to St, Marks square for a brief history of the square and 'you have 3 hours free time'. Next day we were back at St. Marks square for another 3 hours 'free time'. This was the prevailing theme in Florence - more 'free time' and we'll be back here tomorrow. No information given on the museums and fountains and where to find them. On to Rome and the most disappointing experience at the Vatican museum. We were walked through gallery after gallery filled with paintings of Italy. When we reached the Sistine chapel, we entered amidst a throng of people all standing in the chapel trying to admire the beautiful ceiling. This was next to impossible as there was no place to sit. Our celebration dinner was almost cafeteria style and we were limited to 1 hour to enjoy a final dinner with our travel companions. This was our second trip with Insight Vacation and will definitely be our last! We have traveled with Trafalgar many times and have never been disappointed. If it were not for the optional excursions this would have been the worst trip we have ever taken.
Vacation : Not worth what we paid, would not recommend this trip to others!

Service rating : Our tour director was so knowledgeable about Italy. He was organized and made you feel like you were his only customers. Since this was the first ever guided tour for most of our group, Vincenso helped us navigate the ins and outs of a tour. Even though only 9 days, this tour included all the cities you would lime to see in Italy! The coach was great and our driver was excellent!
Response from Grand European Travel:
How wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing. We're beyond pleased to know you had the best time in Italy and that Vincenso helped to make the trip so special for you. Happy travels!

Service rating : It was a little strenuous than I thought it would be. Too much walking and not enough time to brouse and shop. Disappointed that we did not get to the Pontaveccio. The hotels were very comfortable and clean. The breakfasts were great. Our tour director, Chris Beck was outstanding. He was knowlegable ..and extremely kind. He gave me euros when my ATM card wouldn't work. He was outstanding. If there is any way to get my remarks about him to whoever is his boss and to Chris himself I'd really appreciate it. He made this trip.
Vacation : Worth every penny. I would recommend them to family and friends

I had no change to throw in the Trevi fountain and she made sure I had 3 coins. We got along so well with the other travelers on the bus. Belinda made everything just fit so well.
Vacation : The only downside was the hotel in Florence. The service staff was great but the room was strange. We made the best of it and had a lot of fun describing our rooms to each other.

Service rating : This trip was a "girls' trip" (myself, daughter, & sister). The tour locations were spectacular, surpassed only by the outstanding tour leader, Belinda Richardson. We toured historic sites, enjoyed tremendous meals and made wonderful new friends. This was my 5th GET Tour and it was by far the best group I've travelled with--all were kind and courteous and we just had the best time. The person that made the whole trip fun was Belinda. She was informative about the sights we visited, afforded us great views of places like the BACK of the leaning tower of Pisa (everyone else was on the front side taking their pictures!), and was so very helpful to all of our needs, wants, desires, and "issues." Certainly she was one of the highlights of the tour. Would travel with her as a guide again. My whole family thought she was the best. Only a couple of days where there was a lot of walking--the rest of the tour was easily manageable--some walking with morning or afternoon free time. Every single one of the side excursions was worth every penny--things planned for us that we would not have known about if travelling on our own. I would highly recommend the Italian Intermezzo to anyone.
Response from Grand European Travel:

Service rating : Very informative tour. We saw so much. Almost too much to take in in just 9 days. Didn't like 2 days being counted as part of the tour because we handled the flight ourselves.
Vacation : Lorenzo was a wonderful guide. The itenerary was very good especially for a first time visitor to the area.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Italy must have a current passport that is valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering Italy.

  • The currency in Italy is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some euros for when you first arrive in Italy, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate when you arrive in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Italy. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • While Italy is most famous for pizza and pasta, few travelers are aware of just how varied the country’s culinary offering actually are. In fact, each of the 20 regions has its own distinctive cuisine. Traditionally, lunch (pranzo) is the most substantial meal of the day. A full meal consists of antipasto (starter), a primo piatto (pasta, rice or soup), a secondo piatto (meat or fish) with a side, or contorno (vegetable or salad), then frutta (fresh fruit). Finish with espresso and maybe a limoncello or grappa.  Wine is usually served with the meal, accompanied by mineral water. Tap water is safe to drink, but not always tasty. We recommend you buy bottled mineral water. ‘Acqua non potabile’ means the water is not safe to drink.  Find out about some local specialties to try in Italy’s top destinations below.

    Florence

Food in Florence is simple and humble, and relies on the fresh ingredients of the surrounding Tuscan countryside. Many of the local recipes have evolved from peasant dishes to international favorites. Bread is an important staple in Florentine cooking, and is featured in everything from antipasti (appetizers) such as bruschetta to traditional main dishes. Panzanella is a popular summer salad prepared with day old crusty bread and tomatoes.  Papa al pomodoro is a delicious soup made with bread, tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, and herbs.  You’ll also find a variety of dishes featuring white beans, including the hearty ribollita soup.  But the flagship of Florentine cuisine remains the famous bistecca alla fiorentina (T-bone steak).  For a sweet finish, meals are topped off with traditional cantuccini (almond cookies) and the local vin santo dessert wine.

    Venice

A visit to Venice offers an opportunity to discover a variety of truly unique gastronomic traditions.  Venetians have a long-standing tradition of eating cicchetti, small bites similar to Spanish tapas. You can enjoy a variety of these before lunch or dinner, paired with a glass of local wine at restaurants and bars around town. Other common dishes include polenta, risotto with peas, salted cod, sardines, and local bigoli pasta.

    Rome

Roman cuisine is deeply rooted in the past. Despite the city’s imperial history, the food in Rome and the surrounding Lazio region is anything but refined.  Humble pasta dishes such as carbonara, amatriciana, aglio e olio (garlic and olive oil) and cacio e peppe (pecorino cheese and pepper) are local favorites served in trattorias around town. Other foods to try in Rome include pizza, a variety of fritti (fritters) made with everything from salted cod to zucchini flours, stewed oxtail, suppli (rice and Bolognese sauce croquettes) and sharp pecorino cheese. For dessert, try crostata di ricotta (Italian cheesecake) or zeppole (donuts).

  • In Italy, the weather changes very quickly, with temperatures varying from morning to night. We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • At bars and restaurants, tipping is less common or generous as in the U.S. When dining out, it’s appropriate, although not required, to leave an extra euro or two for your waiter.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity. We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
