Overview

Caravans of spice traders and crusading Christian soldiers once crossed the dramatic desert landscapes of Jordan and you will too, journeying to the fabled "rose red” Petra.

Travel to the Middle East often requires an overnight flight. Please arrange for flights to arrive on or before Day 1.

  1. Tread in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia, crusading knights and Bedouin tribes, who once crossed the length and breadth of Jordan leaving their mark on its mystical desert landscapes. Our springboard to the spellbinding ancient trading history of Jordan is the white stone city of Amman, which you will have an opportunity to explore at your leisure after being transferred to your hotel from the airport. Meet your fellow travelers this evening for a cocktail reception followed by dinner.

    meal(s):Welcome Reception
    hotel:Grand Millennium
  2. This morning, we embark on a city tour of Amman to see its Citadel, Archaeological Museum, Roman Amphitheater and Folklore Museum. Our next stop is to Iraq Al Amir where we'll make a difference at the Iraq Al Amir Women's Association and learn first-hand how they make soap from olive oil and craft greeting cards and notebooks from recycled paper. Try your hand at making your own before enjoying a lunch prepared by the women. We continue to the ancient city of Jerash, a favorite city of the Roman emperor Hadrian and an important stop on the incense and spice trade route to the Mediterranean. Amble past its soaring Corinthian columns and view its almost intact city walls, before returning to the seven hills of Amman.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  3. The enchanting rose-red façades of Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, beckon, but not before we visit Mount Nebo, one of the most revered holy sites of Jordan and the place where Moses is buried. You'll see the Madaba Mosaic Map that covers the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George in Madaba and ascend to the Crusader Shobak Castle, perched on the side of a mountain. We arrive in Petra later, where we'll spend the next two nights at the Hyatt Zaman, built on and around an ancient village.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Hyatt Zaman
  4. Admire the archaeological wonder carved into the sheer rock face over 2,000 years ago by the Nabataean people. Imagine silk and spice caravans plying their wares as we enter this mystical trading city through the narrow Siq—flanked by towering cliffs soaring 262 feet high. As we emerge from the path, the stone façade of the Treasury with its ornate decoration looms ahead—the first of many wonders to be explored. Later, we connect with locals in their Bedouin camp near Little Petra. Relax amidst the surrounding dunes and hills, as you enjoy a traditional Bedouin dinner with live 'Rababah' music.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
  5. This morning, we journey through desert landscapes to Wadi Rum, a timeless place whose towering sand dunes were once described by T.E. Lawrence as 'vast, echoing and god-like.' Embark on a jeep tour through the desert watching the landscape rise almost 6,560 feet from the desert floor, amidst which you'll find canyons, waterholes and rock paintings that span millennia. Return to Amman for your final night in Jordan, enjoying a Farewell Dinner with your travel companions. As the sun sets on this magical city, listen to the mystical call of the muezzin and reminisce over an enchanting trip into antiquity.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
    hotel:Grand Millennium
  6. This morning, we bid farewell to this extraordinary land.  Complimentary transfers will be provided for guests who have provided Grand European with their flight details and are staying in an Amman hotel. Conditions apply.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Jordan must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. Jordan issues visas to U.S. citizens for a fee at most international ports of entry and at most international land border crossings upon arrival.

  • The currency in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar. While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination. The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling. It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home, so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Jordan’s cuisine is a diverse mix of Middle Eastern, European, and African flavors. You'll find variations on common Mediterranean dishes like falafel, hummus and baba ganoush, and hummus. Order Mezze and expect to receive small plates all of these with flatbread (pita). The country’s national dish is Mansaf, a lamb stew made yogurt and served with rice or bulger. As tap water is not safe to drink in Jordan, only drink bottled mineral water which is readily available from hotels, shops and restaurants.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items, which can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. We also recommend that women bring a lightweight scarf to demonstrate respect for the different religions with historical ties to the region. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping is expected when dining out, although tends to be less generous than in the United States. It’s appropriate to leave 10-15%. Please advise your server if you need to add the tip onto your credit bill, or simply leave your tip on the table.
At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity. We recommend $3.00 per person/per day for your driver and $5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director. Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 dollars per person, paid at the end of each guided visit. A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You should seek medical advice from your local health practitioner before traveling to Jordan and ensure that you receive the appropriate vaccinations. As a guide, Tetanus, Diphtheria and Hepatitis A are strongly recommended. You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions. All our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers. To get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
