Overview

Travel through rolling olive groves to Corfu with its cobbled alleys, arcades and the elegant Esplanade. Visit the bougainvillea-clad Achilleion Palace, the cliff-top monasteries of Meteora and Delphi's Sacred Way.

Travel to Europe often requires an overnight flight. Please arrange for flights to arrive on or before Day 1.

  1. Venture back to a time when great philosophers roamed the halls of the Agora and gods competed for mythical supremacy. Your journey delving into the treasures of Greece begins in its vibrant capital, which you will have an opportunity to explore after being transferred to your hotel. Complimentary transfers will be available for guests who have provided Grand European with their flight details. Kick off your in-depth discovery of what was once the Cradle of Western Civilization this evening, when you'll meet your Travel Director and travel companions for a Welcome Reception.

    meal(s):Welcome Reception
    hotel:Radisson Blu Park/Marriott
  2. We journey to a land of legends this morning. Our leisurely drive takes us to the scenic northeast Peloponnese and past the impressive Corinth Canal, which straddles two gulfs. Our first stop is the ancient Theater of Epidaurus and the Sanctuary of Asclepius, God of Medicine, whose snake-entwined staff remains the symbol of medicine to this day. Take to the stage and hear first-hand the magnificent acoustics that would entertain over 14,000 spectators, then spend the rest of the day exploring the Venetian-inspired seaport of Nafplion. Amble past its Neoclassical mansions or enjoy a traditional meal against the scenic backdrop of the bay.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Amalia/Nafplia Palace
  3. We continue our journey inland and Mycenae—its ruins remain as a testament of what was once an important palatial center of the late Bronze Age in Greece. Stroll through the Lion Gate and Agamemnon's Royal Palace, before seeing the tomb of this fearless Greek leader who commanded the Greeks in their battles against Trojan forces. This afternoon, we dive into culture and sample delicious local vintages, gaining insights into wine production in the Nemea region. We'll have free time to stroll through the seaside retreat of Nafplion with a delicious Greek ice cream in hand.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  4. Crossing the Peloponnese, we head towards the famous village of Olympia, where sacrifices were once made to the gods, and athletes competed for supremacy in the ancient Olympic Games. Visit the ruins of temples, the museum and the stadium imagining agile runners racing in honor of Zeus. This evening, we connect with locals, joining the Karambellas family on their olive and wine farm for a traditional Be My Guest experience including dinner and dancing.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
    hotel:Olympic Village/Amalia/Europa
  5. We leave the Peninsula and return to mainland Greece, continuing north past Amphilochia and Preveza, before arriving in Nikopolis to see where the Battle of Actium took place. Boarding a ferry, we cross to the beautiful island of Corfu where we have some time at leisure to admire its splendid architecture, arcades and Spianada, one of the largest and most impressive squares in Greece.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Cavalieri/Bella Venezia/Divani Palace
  6. Begin your day with an orientation tour of the island, followed by a visit to the Venetian Castle and monastery of Palaiokastritsa to meet the friendly Orthodox Monks who share their day-to-day life with visitors. Later, we stop at the Phaeacian-styled Achilleion Palace, built by Elizabeth 'Sissi' Empress of Austria and Hungary, who so admired Greece and its culture that she decided to build an enchanting summer retreat here. Stroll through its Imperial Gardens and enjoy magnificent views of the lush valley and glistening Ionian Sea beyond before returning to your hotel for an evening on your own terms.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  7. We bid farewell to island living on Corfu and sail back to the mainland, continuing to the lively lakeside city of Ioannina, where we spend the rest of the day at leisure. Stroll along the tranquil lakeshore and through the Old Town to admire its Ottoman and Byzantine treasures, including the imposing castle that overlooks Lake Pamvotis.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Du Lac/Grand Serai/Frontzou Politia
  8. The delicious flavors of Metsovone cheese and wine provide a fitting start to our day. We continue to Kalambaka and admire the famous Byzantine Monasteries of Meteora that stand almost impossibly perched atop colossal boulders. Pass by the seaside town of Volos before arriving into Portaria.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Despotiko/Xenia/Pelion Resort
  9. Traversing the peaks of Parnassos and Giona, we stop in Thermopylae, the mythical entrance to Hades and the site where Leonidas and his 300 Spartans fought bravely against the invading Persians. Join a Local Specialist for a guided visit to Delphi, the seat of the most important oracle in the classical world. Walk the Sacred Way to the 4th-century Temple of Apollo and ramble through what remains of this ancient sanctuary, once the site of the Pythian Games, a precursor of the modern Olympics. The seaside village of Galaxidi is our final stop for the day.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Nostos/Epavlis/Ganimede
  10. We return to cosmopolitan Athens for a day of delving into antiquity, coming face-to-face with the treasures of Ancient Greece. We ascend to the Acropolis and join a Local Specialist for a sightseeing tour with magnificent views of Athena's Parthenon, the Agora, Royal Palace and Temple of Zeus. See Hadrian's Arch, built to celebrate the arrival of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, and view the stadium where the first modern Olympics took place in 1896. On our final evening together, we join our fellow travelers for a Farewell Dinner to celebrate the millennia and miles explored together on this epic voyage of discovery.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Farewell Dinner
    hotel:Radisson Blu Park/Marriott

Service rating : However, Grand European did not run this trip and this trip needs a lot of help.
Vacation : Most travel days too long with no reward at the end. In Portaria, the hotel was accessible to us by a steep rough long walk. In Galaxidi the room was too small to even leave a suitcase open and the bathroom was totally inadequate. In Corfu we were issued a smoking room and weed quickly told nothing else was available. Upon approaching the tour director and telling him we could not tolerate the room, he switched rooms with us.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Greece must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Greece.

  • The currency in Greece is the Euro (€) and in Turkey is the Lira (₺). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive on your trip, you can use your debit and credit card to pay in most places and will usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Greece. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • One of the most enjoyable parts of traveling is sampling the local cuisine.  Mediterranean food is simple, delicious, and centered on a variety of fresh seafood, produce, cheeses and baked goods. Try Greek salad prepared with tomatoes, feta, olive oil and herbs as well as other popular dishes including grilled lamb, octopus, eggplant and spanakopita.  Olives, cheese and flatbread make a tasty snack paired with a glass of chilled white wine.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping at restaurants is less common than in the U.S. It is appropriate, although not required, to leave an extra euro or two for good service.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
