Embark on a journey of cosmopolitan cities, picture-book towns and breathtaking natural scenery, as you explore iconic highlights of
Bavaria, cruise beneath the fairy-tale castles of the Rhine and watch skilled clock makers in action in the Black Forest.

  1. Board your overnight flight to Europe (not included).
  2. On arrival at Berlin's Tegel Airport, transfers leave for the hotel at 10:30 & 12:30. This afternoon, perhaps visit the KaDeWe department store, the shopping centre of West Berlin - which during 40 years of division, became the shop window of the West. Later, join your Tour Director for a Welcome Reception with the opportunity to mingle over a pleasant evening of dinner and wine.

    meal(s):DW
    hotel:Swissotel Berlin.
  3. Join a Local Expert to see some of Berlin's many highlights. Travel along the Ku'Damm to the Memorial Church. Drive through the Tiergarten to see Norman Foster's glass dome that crowns the reconstructed Reichstag building. Continue past the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of the reunification, and down along the Unter den Linden, past the Humboldt University and State Opera. Stop on Museum Island before enjoying an afternoon at leisure in this once divided city. Perhaps take the opportunity to visit the glorious palace of the Prussian Emperors at Potsdam?

    meal(s):BB
    hotel:Swissotel Berlin.
  4. Continue to Dresden and join your Local Expert to see the splendors of the city. From the Frauenkirche, which has risen again from the destruction of World War II, walk past ‘The Procession of the Dukes', a mosaic of colossal proportions on the Royal Palace facade. See the enormous cathedral, Semper Opera House and Baroque Zwinger Palace.

    meal(s):BB
hotel:Hyperion Hotel Dresden am Schloss, Dresden.
  5. Venture to Rothenburg-ob-der Tauber, the most well-preserved town on the Romantic Road. Plunge back into the 16th century as you walk through narrow cobbled streets lined with high-gabled houses to the market square, dominated by its Renaissance town hall. With an artisan baker, enjoy a demonstration and learn the history of the traditional pastry Schneeballen (snowball), followed by a tasting. Afterwards, the rest of your day is free to explore the quaint town. For your Dine-Around experience in the evening, choose from a selection of restaurants within the walls of the Old Town.

    meal(s):BB, DW
    hotel:Eisenhut, Rothenburg.
  6. It's only a short drive to Nuremberg, renowned for its medieval architecture. Admire the charming blend of stone and timbered dwellings in the Old Town, see the massive ramparts, most of which are still standing, and perhaps shop for delicious Lebkuchen? Continue across the Danube to reach fun-loving Munich where an orientation with your Travel Director will show you the university, Victory Arch and the Marienplatz, where crowds gather at the Town Hall to watch the antics of the Glockenspiel. At night, perhaps consider dinner at one of Munich's famous ‘Bier Kellers'?

    meal(s):BB
    hotel:Pullman, Munich
  7. Travel to Neuschwanstein, a fairy-tale castle spectacularly perched on an Alpine mountainside. A local historian will show you King Ludwig II's favorite castle, which was supposedly the inspiration for many of Walt Disney's castles. Visit the exuberantly decorated apartments, including the Throne Room and Lohengrin Grotto. Continue along part of the Alpine Road amid beautiful scenery to the Wieskirche, a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo. Venture onto Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps, home of the famous Passion Play, which dates back to 1634. See the immense theater and colorfully-painted chalets. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore further as you wish.

    meal(s):BB
    hotel:Alte-Post/Hotel Wittelsbach, Oberammergau
  8. Enjoy a relaxed start before travelling through lush, rolling dairy country to Lindau, an island situated in the middle of Lake Constance, connected to the mainland by a causeway. Stroll through the narrow streets past old inns and half-timbered houses, to admire the fantastic backdrop of the Swiss and Austrian Alps across the lake. Take a delightful drive along the shores of Lake Constance, lined with orchards and vineyards and into the Black Forest. Stay in the quaint town of Villingen-Schwenningen which has existed for 1,200 years and was under Austrian lordship through the Middle Ages. For dinner you are treated to a delightful Farm-to-Table experience at a local restaurant with locally-sourced ingredients, skillfully prepared and accompanied with wine.

    meal(s):BB, DW
    hotel:DORMERO Hotel Villingen-Schwenningen.
  9. The Black Forest is the land of cherry cake and cuckoo clocks, where traditional farmhouses dip their thatched roofs almost to the ground. Stop in one of the centres of the wood-carving industry to meet locals who still make cuckoo clocks by hand, a tradition passed down over 300 years. Then head through the valleys, where villages and isolated farms nestle beside fast flowing streams, before travelling north to Heidelberg. Enjoy the outlook from the heights of the castle fortress before venturing inside to see the Great Wine Vat, with its associated tales of the dwarf court jester, Perkeo. Spend time in the vast and insightful Apothecary Museum, before enjoying panoramic views of Heidelberg and the Neckar Valley. Your hotel is in the nearby town of Mainz, a bustling and important town since the time of the Romans.
    meal(s):BB
    hotel:Hilton, Mainz (2 nights).
  10. Begin the day with a relaxing cruise past steep-sided vineyards, half-timbered taverns, the hilltop castles and the notorious Lorelei Rock. Alight at Boppard and continue to Koblenz where a gigantic equestrian statue of Wilhelm I guards the junction of the Rhine and Moselle. Camera at the ready as you return along the eastern bank. Enjoy the scenic views from the mighty Niederwald Monument. In the evening, round off your German experience with a farewell Celebration Dinner overlooking the River Rhine, complete with the local wine. Prost!

    meal(s):BB, DW
    hotel:Hilton, Mainz.
  11. Your journey comes to an end after breakfast. Departure transfers arrive at Frankfurt Airport at 08:00 & 10:00.

Vacation : The trip was very interesting with many lovely places to see and explore. Our travel director, Petra, was great. The only issue was that everyone was complaining that everything was so rushed.

Service rating : I enjoyed the entire trip. I felt that the places we saw were excellent. Also excellent was our guide, Hildegard who was very knowledgable and Petr, our bus driver. Petr was an excellent driver. Our step on guides were also excellent. I think my only complaint would be that some of the hotel rooms were not as warm as I would have liked. Had a problem with the heat at the Hilton in Mainz, when I spoke to the desk, the problem was remedied. I felt the selection of restrauants were also very good.
Vacation : I did bring some purchases back for family & friends, and myself. Due to airline weight restrictions I had to choose carefully. When I gave them to my family etc. everyone liked them.

Vacation:
Service rating : As far as the actual tour goes, it was about average for a bus trip. The hotels that we stayed in were nice enough. There really wasn't a lot of sightseeing included in the trip, without paying extra for the optionals. Many days, without buying the optionals, the included part of the tour would have been over before noon. In fact, one day, it would have been over at 9 am! - We had the disadvantage of having a tour guide who wasn't very interested in her job. She was downright rude to several people and did the bare minimum. When we arrived at the airport in Berlin, our luggage did not arrive with us. She gave us quite a lecture on not having our "high visibility" luggage tag where she could see it..... a bit hard, as I told her, since we didn't have luggage to put it on. I had a paper that customer service had given us to try to contact the airlines to check on the progress they were having in locating it. I showed it to her and asked if she could help us with it, since we didn't have phone service in Germany. She told us that the hotel could probably help us. Even the next day... she never even asked if the hotel had been able to help us or if we had gotten our luggage. - This tour included going to Oktoberfest in lieu of a city tour. At first, she wasn't even going to take us to Oktoberfest and make sure that we were able to get back in a strange city at night. She told us that she was going to give us a day pass for the tram and instructions to get there and back. Many people were not happy and she did end up taking us there and coming back to get us at 8 pm. There were some people who had been afraid to go for fear that they would get lost at night trying to get back. - It does kind of seem like Insight is providing less for their trips than they have in the past. Mostly, the included parts are city tours and you don't really see that much on them. Even when you do tour a castle or someplace, you get a very abbreviated tour.
Vacation : I've already written why under customer experience.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Germany must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering Germany.

  • The currency in Germany is the Euro. While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive in Europe, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Traditional German cuisine is rich and delicious.  Try specialties including a variety of bratwurst with sauerkraut, cold cuts, spätzle and potato dumplings.  For dessert you cannot miss the world famous Black Forest Gateau.   Beer is a big part of German culture; sample a variety of German offerings including pilsner, Kölsch and sour beers.  In Frankfurt, try the local cider (Apfelwein).   Wine is also popular throughout Germany, and world-class whites are produced in the Rhine and Mosel regions.

  • We recommend packing layers to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress.  It’s important to bring comfortable walking shoes and a waterproof jacket with a hood. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • A service charge is typically included in the price of food at restaurants in Germany.  When leaving a tip, it is appropriate to simply round up or add up to 10 percent to your bill.   Rather than leaving your money on the table, be prepared to leave it with your waiter when you pay your bill.  If you are expecting change, simply tell them how much you will need back after gratuity.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
