Service rating : I enjoyed the entire trip. I felt that the places we saw were excellent. Also excellent was our guide, Hildegard who was very knowledgable and Petr, our bus driver. Petr was an excellent driver. Our step on guides were also excellent. I think my only complaint would be that some of the hotel rooms were not as warm as I would have liked. Had a problem with the heat at the Hilton in Mainz, when I spoke to the desk, the problem was remedied. I felt the selection of restrauants were also very good.
Vacation : I did bring some purchases back for family & friends, and myself. Due to airline weight restrictions I had to choose carefully. When I gave them to my family etc. everyone liked them.

Service rating : As far as the actual tour goes, it was about average for a bus trip. The hotels that we stayed in were nice enough. There really wasn't a lot of sightseeing included in the trip, without paying extra for the optionals. Many days, without buying the optionals, the included part of the tour would have been over before noon. In fact, one day, it would have been over at 9 am! - We had the disadvantage of having a tour guide who wasn't very interested in her job. She was downright rude to several people and did the bare minimum. When we arrived at the airport in Berlin, our luggage did not arrive with us. She gave us quite a lecture on not having our "high visibility" luggage tag where she could see it..... a bit hard, as I told her, since we didn't have luggage to put it on. I had a paper that customer service had given us to try to contact the airlines to check on the progress they were having in locating it. I showed it to her and asked if she could help us with it, since we didn't have phone service in Germany. She told us that the hotel could probably help us. Even the next day... she never even asked if the hotel had been able to help us or if we had gotten our luggage. - This tour included going to Oktoberfest in lieu of a city tour. At first, she wasn't even going to take us to Oktoberfest and make sure that we were able to get back in a strange city at night. She told us that she was going to give us a day pass for the tram and instructions to get there and back. Many people were not happy and she did end up taking us there and coming back to get us at 8 pm. There were some people who had been afraid to go for fear that they would get lost at night trying to get back. - It does kind of seem like Insight is providing less for their trips than they have in the past. Mostly, the included parts are city tours and you don't really see that much on them. Even when you do tour a castle or someplace, you get a very abbreviated tour.
Vacation : I've already written why under customer experience.

Vacation:
Service rating : 1. The hotel in Munchen was located well out of the city center; not what I expected from Insight. 2. Too many lunch stops at rest stops, when it often seemed that the stops could have been arranged for locations of actual interest. 3. The particular tour guide we had was not particularly helpful or informative. It would have been nice to have had specifics about the timetable in advance to permit planning.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We are sorry to hear that we fell short of your expectations on this trip. We have shared your valuable feedback with the Quality Control team at Insight Vacations for immediate review. We appreciate you bringing these issues to our attention.

She gave us extra information for great places to eat, shop, and little side sites during our visits to the many cities we visited. We are planning a trip to Scotland with Grand European Travel/ Insight this fall and really wish our tour guide would go to Scotland too. We really appreciated her. Thank You so much for a wonderful vacation. SALLY R FARNER

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Germany must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens entering Germany.

  • The currency in Germany is the Euro. While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive in Europe, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Traditional German cuisine is rich and delicious.  Try specialties including a variety of bratwurst with sauerkraut, cold cuts, spätzle and potato dumplings.  For dessert you cannot miss the world famous Black Forest Gateau.   Beer is a big part of German culture; sample a variety of German offerings including pilsner, Kölsch and sour beers.  In Frankfurt, try the local cider (Apfelwein).   Wine is also popular throughout Germany, and world-class whites are produced in the Rhine and Mosel regions.

  • We recommend packing layers to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress.  It’s important to bring comfortable walking shoes and a waterproof jacket with a hood. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • A service charge is typically included in the price of food at restaurants in Germany.  When leaving a tip, it is appropriate to simply round up or add up to 10 percent to your bill.   Rather than leaving your money on the table, be prepared to leave it with your waiter when you pay your bill.  If you are expecting change, simply tell them how much you will need back after gratuity.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 48 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.

Optional Experiences are subject to change. Your Travel Director will supply you with a final list of Optional Experiences available on your trip. Optional Experiences cannot be booked online; they can be purchased during your trip through your Travel Director.
