Overview

The stillness of Milford Sound and ultimate glacier adventure dot your travels through New Zealand, but not before a brush with the surfing splendor of Aussie's Bondi Beach and the Great Barrier Reef.

Travel to Australia from the USA requires crossing the International Date Line. Please arrange for flights to arrive on or before Day 1. Ensure your flights are booked two days prior to the start date of the tour itinerary.

  1. Sophisticated Melbourne extends a warm welcome as your first stop. On arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel (flights to arrive prior to noon). Then it’s out on the town this evening for a Welcome Reception and dinner with your Travel Director and fellow travelers.

    meal(s):Welcome Reception, Dinner with Wine
    hotel:Crowne Plaza
  2. Dive into culture and into the little lanes, arcades and café society of stylish Melbourne. Discover its edgy street art and immerse yourself in the robust aroma of coffee for which this city is so famous.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  3. We fly north to Cairns, where we'll meet a Local Specialist for a private wildlife encounter at Hartley's Crocodile Adventures. Here the crocs are the star of the show as we take to Hartley's Lagoon to see them cruise the murky waters or laze on the bank. This evening, enjoy an evening at leisure to sample some of the city's famous seafood.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Pacific Cairns
  4. Dip more than your toes in the tropical waters that surround the Great Barrier Reef—a full day to explore this underwater wonderland up close. Board a high-speed catamaran, then don your mask and fins for a leisurely snorkel (equipment provided) or stay dry in your semi-submersible craft to see the tropical species that live in the world's largest coral reef system. A tropical buffet lunch is served on board under the glorious Aussie sunshine before returning to Cairns.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Lunch
  5. Soak up the leisurely atmosphere of Cairns with a free day to explore the city and its surrounds on your terms. Consider joining an Optional Experience to Kuranda, traveling by Scenic Rail to the 'village in the rainforest' and return to the lowlands on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. This evening, connect with locals at the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, where you'll hear stories of the Dreamtime and witness an entertaining high-impact performance by the indigenous dance group. Your Be My Guest dinner is served to the hypnotic sounds of the didgeridoo.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner
  6. We leave the golden beaches of Cairns behind, bound for Sydney. Settle into your splendid surrounds before boarding a Captain Cook Sunset Dinner Cruise. Watch day turn to night against the backdrop of the beloved Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge as you enjoy a two-course à la carte Regional Meal on the water.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Regional Meal
hotel:Hyatt Regency (Darling Harbour View Room)
  7. Admire one of the great iconic buildings of the 20th century during a guided sightseeing tour of the Sydney Opera House with a Local Specialist. Later, rub shoulders with the bronzed, beautiful people of Bondi Beach as you visit the Returned Servicemen's Club for a Regional Meal. Join a local surf lifesaver who will take you on an exclusive tour through Australia's oldest surf lifesaving club and share insights into surf lifesaving and the history of Bondi, which has been welcoming beach-goers since 1882.

Later, admire vivid hues of greenstone during a visit to a jade factory in Hokitika, where you'll witness first-hand a Local Specialist master carver at work. Service rating : This is why we keep coming back. The only problem that we had with communication was that our hotel in Sydney closed down the last day we were there for renovations. Therefore, we lost our full day to sight see because we had no where to keep our luggage. We were in the airport until our flight left at 9:30.
Response from Grand European Travel:
So sorry to hear about the Sydney hotel closing on you. We're happy to see that despite that glitch, you were able to enjoy your trip. We appreciate your feedback! Dee-Grand European Travel

Service rating : Our travel arrangements had many glitches. We could have saved 6 or 7 hours arriving in Aucland if they had not booked us via Sydney. Vouchers for transfer sent to my husband's brother resulting in not knowing who yo look for when we arrived at airport. Also the time between flights was too short resulting in luggage not making it on our Sidney to Auckland flight. But the biggest disappointment was the mix and match of the tour group from at least three agencies....Have never experienced this before. It did not foster group cohesiveness. Gaining people, losing people, different tour directors. Didn't like it at all. And then being Bumped off the flight from Christ Church to Sidney due to their overbooking without any compensation was more than annoying.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to see that there were issues with your flights on Qantas. We always reserve the most direct flights available at time of booking. I'm sorry if the routing was not acceptable to you. I have contacted Qantas on your behalf (and everyone in your party) to request compensation for them moving you to a different flight without notice. I hope to have a reply from them in the next 2-3 weeks. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention. Dee-Grand European Travel

Vacation : The sights and experiences in both countries were very good. We really liked Marty our tour director in New Zealand. But because everyone's flights and arrivals were varied we got caught twice arriving in the hotel with no tour guide arriving for hours and unable to get into our hotel room because it was so early in the day. Bad organizational planning really put a damper on our good times.

Vacation : The Contrasts of Australia and New Zealand Vacation was wonderful! Although the itinerary was a bit busy, I enjoyed the sites that were visited. The tour guides in both New Zealand and Australia were very knowledgeable and experienced. The hotels that I stayed in were comfortable and met my expectations. The staff of each hotel seemed to be concern that my stay would be superb. I recommend that anyone who is interested in travelling to either of these to countries contact GET.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Australia and New Zealand must have a current passport that is valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. Australia also requires an electronic visa which is obtained at the time of your airline ticket purchase.

  • You will be using the Australian dollar and New Zealand dollar on your trip. You can use your debit or credit card for purchases. The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Australia and New Zealand. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • Food in Australia and New Zealand is innovative and diverse. As island nations with strong agricultural traditions, culinary traditions here are guided by local ingredients and seasonal variations, as well as international influences. You’ll find a variety of seafood including fresh oysters and crab, grilled steaks and lamb chops, meat pies, and fish and chips.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of comfortable, lightweight clothing that can be layered to save space in your suitcase and give you more options for how to dress. Sturdy walking shoes are important. Insect repellent and sunscreen may come in handy, as well as a light jacket and reusable water bottle. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • It is not customary to tip at restaurants in Australia and New Zealand. If you would like to reward good service when dining out it’s appropriate to leave 10 percent gratuity for your waiter.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity.  We recommend the equivalent of $4 per person/per day for your driver and $6 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is the equivalent of 1-2 dollars per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
