  • U.S. citizens traveling to Spain must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens visiting Spain.

  • The currency in Spain is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Spain. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • One of the most enjoyable parts of traveling is sampling the local cuisine.  Spain offers a delicious selection of cured hams, chorizo sausage, seafood, cheeses, and more.  Try traditional dishes such as tortilla española (Spanish omelet), paella, and desserts such as flan, churros, and Catalan cream.

Lunch is the largest meal of the day in Spain, with many restaurants offering multi course menus at a fixed price.  For a quick lunch at a reasonable price, stop by a café, outdoor market, or food cart for a bocadillo, a traditional Spanish sandwich made with baguette-style bread, ham and cheese.

Tapas are small bites served in bars and restaurants that can be enjoyed as an appetizer or a meal. Try a variety of marinated olives, potatoes, croquettes, grilled octopus, and toasted bread with various toppings.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase.  This will also give you many options for how to dress in Spain’s different climates. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping in Spain is much less common than in the U.S. When dining out, it’s appreciated, although not required, to leave a few extra euros for your server, and up to 10 percent for particularly good service.  Leave your tip on the table rather than adding it to your credit card slip to ensure that your waiter receives it.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 48 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.

Service rating : The only negative comment that I have on my recent trip is the transfer from the airport to the hotel. Our plane was about 15 minutes later after the 12:30 transfer time and we missed it. But we spent about 75 euros for 2 cabs to get us to the hotel. I think the driver of the transfer should know how many of us was missing and waited a little longer. On our last Viking River cruise, we waited at the airport because there was 2 people missing who should have been in the transfer to the ship. I didn't mind waiting an extra 30 minutes! So I wasted our transfer X 6 for the start of our tour!
Vacation : I thought the director was very knowledgeable of the areas that we traveled to and was very helpful. The group was very friendly and we didn't have any problems with anyone in our group, like on our Costa Rica tour!

Service rating : We were satisfied with the trip overall with the exception of items listed below.
Vacation : Overall the vacation was great and we had a great time with the exception of the following. 1. The winery stop on the way to Madrid was a total waste of time. It was not a true winery. It looked like a warehouse. Who wants to do wine tasting in such a bad environment. A winery stop shpuld be in a beautiful winery with vineyards and grapes on the property. This location was in an industrial environment. Not happy with it. 2. The dinner served at the Flamenco show was sub standard.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you for your input and suggestions. We will pass this along to our planning team for further review. We are glad to see that overall you enjoyed your trip.

Vacation : Booked through Insight Vacations, the extra-roomy motorcoach with Wi-fi and top-rate hotels were a pleasure. The trip director and local guides were excellent. I added three days in Barcelona to tour four more Gaudí buildings. I added three days in Madrid to do a thorough tour of the Prado and another art museum.

Vacation : Denise our Tour Director was excellent always very helpful and always smiling and made the trip a real pleasure for all the guests. The Madrid night tour was a waste of both time and money as it just rehashed exactly what we had already done. The demonstration at Toledo was very poor, just a few minutes and then whisked into the showroom. The pace of the tour is very quick and not really enough time to enjoy things to the fullest, nevertheless we enjoyed the tour and had a really pleasant time.

Vacation:
Service rating : We have used many travel companies in the past but from now on will only consider Grand European Travel or Insight Vacations. We loved our guide Alex, bus driver Pedro, and the entire trip.
Vacation : Two disappointments: One, the hotel in Seville. Two, our airplane seats on return trip. We bought so early we feel we should been assigned a window/aisle seat like we had on way to Spain. Instead we sat in the middle section. We SHOULD have noticed and tried to change seats but neglected to so I suppose we were responsible for the error.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you so much for your reply. Unfortunately the airlines are taking control of most of the best seats on their planes, especially the window and aisles. We always try to get those for our guests but in most cases the airlines will charge a fee for those seats and we do not have access to them. But always ask when you book with us again!
