Continue through the Eixample district for a visit inside Gaudí's extraordinary masterpiece, the Sagrada Família, to see the central nave with its giant, tree-like pillars, spectacular vaulting and the beautiful rainbows flooding in through the intricate stained-glass windows. Valencia is home to one of the world's greatest dishes, paella. Service rating : The places visited were of such importance to the history of Spain. History you had learned as a child that was almost seen before your eyes when mentioned. The fact that Spain was linked so closely to the United States by its history almost was seen through your minds eye. The architecture was captivating. The tour guide had answers for all the questions. It was amazing to be walking on the same cobblestones that Hannibal or even possibly Cervantes or Columbus! It was almost surreal.
Vacation : The only drawback was the walking. I was woefully unprepared. A warning this is a rigorous work out should be mentioned. Preparing for this tour should be a priority. As I purchased through AARP I was assuming this would be more user friendly but it is not. It would have been much more enjoyable if my calves weren't on fire! That aside the whole trip was enthralling. The tour guide and the bus driver, bless the bus driver, were professional and well versed. Magical Spain. What a highlight of my life.

Service rating : The entire trip was well planned. the only difficulty arose out of poor directions for meeting the tours guide at the Madrid airport. The instruction to "meet the representative at the Group Meeting Area, located to the right after leaving customs and opposite the Tourist Information Office" is meaningless to a person who has never been to the airport. There are no signs to tell a person where any of the referenced points are. They are outside the baggage area, way past customs. The directions should state that it is necessary to leave the baggage area at the door nearest the applicable numbered baggage carousel to get to the representative.
Vacation : See above description for comments..

Every effort was made to accomodate requests by the travelers The motor coach was roomy and comfortable. Our coach driver was excellent and we felt safe at all times His name was Alberto.
Vacation : The tour was excellent, however some things could be improved. The Hotel in Barcelona was good but in a poor location, a location near shopping and Las Rambles would be better. The Toledo tour did not do justice to the ancient city, there is much more than the cathedral. It would be nice to have another day in Madrid to enjoy the city on your own

Service rating : The only negative comment that I have on my recent trip is the transfer from the airport to the hotel. Our plane was about 15 minutes later after the 12:30 transfer time and we missed it. But we spent about 75 euros for 2 cabs to get us to the hotel. I think the driver of the transfer should know how many of us was missing and waited a little longer. On our last Viking River cruise, we waited at the airport because there was 2 people missing who should have been in the transfer to the ship. I didn't mind waiting an extra 30 minutes! So I wasted our transfer X 6 for the start of our tour!
Vacation : I thought the director was very knowledgeable of the areas that we traveled to and was very helpful. The group was very friendly and we didn't have any problems with anyone in our group, like on our Costa Rica tour!

Vacation : Overall the vacation was great and we had a great time with the exception of the following. 1. The winery stop on the way to Madrid was a total waste of time. It was not a true winery. It looked like a warehouse. Who wants to do wine tasting in such a bad environment. A winery stop shpuld be in a beautiful winery with vineyards and grapes on the property. This location was in an industrial environment. Not happy with it. 2. The dinner served at the Flamenco show was sub standard.

Service rating : Very well organized
Vacation : Denise our Tour Director was excellent always very helpful and always smiling and made the trip a real pleasure for all the guests. The Madrid night tour was a waste of both time and money as it just rehashed exactly what we had already done. The demonstration at Toledo was very poor, just a few minutes and then whisked into the showroom. The pace of the tour is very quick and not really enough time to enjoy things to the fullest, nevertheless we enjoyed the tour and had a really pleasant time.

Service rating : We have used many travel companies in the past but from now on will only consider Grand European Travel or Insight Vacations. We loved our guide Alex, bus driver Pedro, and the entire trip.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you so much for your reply. Unfortunately the airlines are taking control of most of the best seats on their planes, especially the window and aisles. We always try to get those for our guests but in most cases the airlines will charge a fee for those seats and we do not have access to them. But always ask when you book with us again! Vacation : Two disappointments: One, the hotel in Seville. Two, our airplane seats on return trip. We bought so early we feel we should been assigned a window/aisle seat like we had on way to Spain. Instead we sat in the middle section. We SHOULD have noticed and tried to change seats but neglected to so I suppose we were responsible for the error.

We're sorry to see that you felt rushed at certain times of the trip. There are alot of things to see and do and we try to get most of them in without too much disruption. But your comments are valid and we will be sharing them with our planning office for further review. Thank you Grand European Travel

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Spain must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens visiting Spain.

  • The currency in Spain is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Spain. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • One of the most enjoyable parts of traveling is sampling the local cuisine.  Spain offers a delicious selection of cured hams, chorizo sausage, seafood, cheeses, and more.  Try traditional dishes such as tortilla española (Spanish omelet), paella, and desserts such as flan, churros, and Catalan cream.

Lunch is the largest meal of the day in Spain, with many restaurants offering multi course menus at a fixed price.  For a quick lunch at a reasonable price, stop by a café, outdoor market, or food cart for a bocadillo, a traditional Spanish sandwich made with baguette-style bread, ham and cheese.

Tapas are small bites served in bars and restaurants that can be enjoyed as an appetizer or a meal. Try a variety of marinated olives, potatoes, croquettes, grilled octopus, and toasted bread with various toppings.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase.  This will also give you many options for how to dress in Spain’s different climates. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping in Spain is much less common than in the U.S. When dining out, it’s appreciated, although not required, to leave a few extra euros for your server, and up to 10 percent for particularly good service.  Leave your tip on the table rather than adding it to your credit card slip to ensure that your waiter receives it.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
