Overview

This zesty fiesta through Spain includes the ornate Alhambra Palace in Granada, Valencia's 19th-century Bullring and Gaudí's Gothic gift to Barcelona—La Sagrada Família.

Spanish Wonder also has winter departures; click here to see the Winter Season version of this tour!

Travel to Europe often requires an overnight flight. Please arrange for flights to arrive on or before Day 1.

  1. Bienvenidos a Madrid. On arrival at Madrid Airport transfers will operate at 10:30 am, 1 pm and 3:30 pm. Guests arriving later should make their own way to the hotel. The lively capital of Spain is our launch pad to a memorable encounter with one of Europe's most soulful destinations. Relax in the lush surrounds of Buen Retiro Park, shop up a storm on Gran Vía or people-watch over coffee and napolitana con chocolate in Puerta del Sol. This evening, join your fellow travelers and Travel Director for a fiery Welcome Reception, followed by an orientation drive to see some of the city's most iconic sights.

    meal(s):Welcome Reception
    hotel:Ayre Gran Colon
  2. We head to Toledo, the former capital of Spain, where we join a Local Specialist for a walking tour of this city that dates back to Roman times. We'll visit a traditional factory and dive into culture, witnessing the age-old inlaid-steel craft, before seeing one of El Greco's most famous paintings in the Church of Santo Tomé, 'The Burial of Count Orgaz.' We'll also visit the synagogue, then return to Madrid where we'll admire the monument to Cervantes and Don Quixote at the Plaza de España. See Puerta del Sol, the city's hub with our Local Specialist, before spending the evening on your own, delving into the delicious flavors of Spain's tapas capital.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  3. Journeying south through La Mancha, we arrive in Córdoba, once a significant Moorish settlement. Join a Local Specialist to visit the Mosque of the Caliphs and learn about centuries of Moorish rule and its influence on the culture and architecture of the region. We travel to flamboyant Seville, our home for the next two nights. Consider an Optional Experience to see the colorful twirling skirts in a fiery flamenco or rub shoulders with the Sevillanos in search of delicious tapeo and wine.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Zenit
  4. This morning, we meet our Local Specialist for a sightseeing tour of Seville. View the symbolic Bell Tower of the Giralda, see the Moorish-inspired Maria Luisa Park, with its tiled fountains, pavilions and ponds, and walk through the imposing Plaza de España. Marvel at Christopher Columbus's ornate tomb in the cathedral, then take a walk through the former Jewish Quarter. This evening, we connect with locals, joining the Morillo family for a Be My Guest dinner at their olive oil mill, where you'll learn how oil is produced from their 6,000 trees and get to sample some of their produce.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
  5. Multi-cultural Granada takes center stage today, as we visit the magnificent Alhambra in the company of a Local Specialist. A fine example of Moorish architecture, the Alhambra complex was built during the 14th century, towards the end of Islamic rule in Spain. Wander through the exotic water gardens of the Generalife, the royal Summer Palace, once linked to the other palaces by a covered walkway across the ravine.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Allegro
  6. This morning, we journey via Mora Pass to Guadix in the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. We'll see the whitewashed troglodyte dwellings lodged into the ochre-colored cliffs of the surrounding area, then travel to Valencia, where we'll view the Bullring and admire its medieval architecture. Embrace the city's spirit of innovation and stop to view the City of Arts and Sciences, a large-scale urban recreation center for culture and science. This evening, dine at your hotel and take to the vibrant streets of the Old Quarter.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
    hotel:Tryp Oceanic
  7. Head north, along the coast through the Levant region, and stop at Peñíscola, the City in the Sea. View the ancient castle of the 'Spanish Pope,' built by the Knights Templar and used in the film, 'El Cid.' Then, journey along the Costa Dorada to Barcelona with its whimsical Gaudí architecture. Admire this famous architect's talents at his unfinished La Sagrada Família Cathedral, which has been under construction since 1882. See the Plaça de Catalunya and pay tribute to the great Christopher Columbus, with your Local Specialist. Later, take a trip up Montjuïc for panoramic views of this enchanting city. Enjoy a free evening to spend as you wish. Ramble through El Born for delicious tapas or consider visiting a Catalan-style restaurant for a delicious dinner of local specialties.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:U232
  8. Explore centuries of history, contemporary culture and exquisite art and architecture on your day at leisure. Visit Gaudí's fantasy Park Güell, stroll through the enchanting Gothic Quarter or join an Optional Experience to the monastery perched atop Montserrat to see the mystical Black Madonna, the patron saint of Catalonia. This evening, we celebrate a memorable journey through Spain with our newfound friends and Travel Director at a special Farewell Dinner with wine.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Farewell Dinner
  9. For now it's a fond adiós to Spain at the end of a memorable vacation. A return transfer will arrive at Barcelona Airport at 8 am. Conditions apply.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast

Service rating : Miquel was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and courteous. The buses were very comfortable. The hotels were excellent with the exception of the location of the Ayre Gran in Madrid.
Vacation : We took the extra Montserrat tour. What an amazing place. Awesome views and the trip up the winding road was outstanding. My only bad thought is the local experts usually go into way too much detail. When I'm in a huge cathedral, I want to be moving not standing in one spot listening to way too much detail.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Spain must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens visiting Spain.

  • The currency in Spain is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Spain. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • One of the most enjoyable parts of traveling is sampling the local cuisine.  Spain offers a delicious selection of cured hams, chorizo sausage, seafood, cheeses, and more.  Try traditional dishes such as tortilla española (Spanish omelet), paella, and desserts such as flan, churros, and Catalan cream.

Lunch is the largest meal of the day in Spain, with many restaurants offering multi course menus at a fixed price.  For a quick lunch at a reasonable price, stop by a café, outdoor market, or food cart for a bocadillo, a traditional Spanish sandwich made with baguette-style bread, ham and cheese.
Tapas are small bites served in bars and restaurants that can be enjoyed as an appetizer or a meal. Try a variety of marinated olives, potatoes, croquettes, grilled octopus, and toasted bread with various toppings.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase.  This will also give you many options for how to dress in Spain’s different climates. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping in Spain is much less common than in the U.S. When dining out, it’s appreciated, although not required, to leave a few extra euros for your server, and up to 10 percent for particularly good service.  Leave your tip on the table rather than adding it to your credit card slip to ensure that your waiter receives it.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity. We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
