Sri Lanka is an unexpected traveler’s delight, welcoming its visitors with an array of tropical sandy beaches, traditional tea plantations, and mesmerizing UNESCO Sites. Located off the southern coast of India, the island country is best explored on an expertly planned guided tour uncovering all the highlights, with experiences that connect you with the local people and culture. Looking for something a little different? Sri Lanka is an adventure you’ll never forget.
Covering all of Sri Lanka’s ‘musts’ means exploring ancient Buddhist temples and ruins dating back more than 2,000 years. The Dambulla Cave, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is the country’s oldest and best-preserved complex of cave temples. The designated UNESCO World Heritage Site’s five caves offer visitors a fascinating glimpse of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist origins. And nothing tops a visit to Sigiriya, or Lion Rock, an ancient rock fortress perched high in the sky and surrounded by lush tropical forest. Visitors can ascend to the top of Lion Rock or go halfway, to Lions Paw, to admire the area’s well-preserved archeological sites.
Get off the main road and enjoy a rickshaw ride (or “tuk-tuk” in Sri Lankan) to one of the country’s smaller villages for a taste of the local culture. Meet the people, learn about their traditions and enjoy a typical regional meal. Then continue your journey to Sri Lanka’s beautiful tea country; take a step back in time in a colonial atmosphere complete with rose gardens, hedges and red roof buildings, as you explore the history and culture of how Ceylon tea production.
