Overview

Vibrant Spanish cities, the running of the bulls in Pamplona and the smell of orange zest in Valencia are yours to discover as you indulge in Spain's distinct art, architecture and culture.

Travel to Europe often requires an overnight flight. Please arrange for flights to arrive on or before Day 1.

  1. Welcome to the fiery Iberian capital that is Madrid. On arrival at Madrid Airport transfers will operate at 10:30 am, 1 pm and 3:30 pm. Guests arriving later should make their own way to the hotel. Delve deep into the soul of a city that marches to the tune of the tapas before meeting up with your fellow travelers and Travel Director for a memorable Welcome Reception and orientation drive to see some of the city's most iconic sights.

    meal(s):Welcome Reception
    hotel:Rafael Atocha
  2. Journey over the pine-clad Guadarrama Mountains to Burgos, the historic capital of Castile, where we will visit the tomb of El Cid, a national hero and the protagonist of the most significant medieval Spanish epic poem, 'El Cantar de Mio Cid.' We cross the Ebro River and the Cantabrian Cordillera mountains, traveling to the coast and the sophisticated capital of the Cantabrian region, Santander.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
    hotel:Santemar
  3. We depart Santander and travel to Bilbao to view the striking Guggenheim Museum, built from titanium, glass and limestone and designed by renowned Canadian-American architect, Frank Gehry. Continuing to San Sebastián, the gourmet capital of Spain, we see the beautiful Bahia de la Concha beach during our orientation drive. Our overnight stay is in the vibrant city of Pamplona, famous for its Running of the Bulls fiesta. Follow in the footsteps of Hemingway and enjoy a drink at Café Iruña, ramble along the brilliantly lit city ramparts or delight in the local pintxos before enjoying dinner at your hotel this evening.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
    hotel:NH Iruna Park
  4. Our journey continues through the Ebro Valley bound for beguiling Barcelona where we'll view the Basilica of El Pilar and Cathedral of La Seo of Zaragoza. Soak up the charm of a city that professes two great loves—Gaudí and football. Enjoy panoramic views of a city, which dates back to Roman times, from Montjuïc, then spend the rest of the day at leisure. Amble through the Gothic Quarter's labyrinthine lanes, indulge in the aromas and flavors of La Boqueria and discover the best crèma Catalana in town.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Ayre Gran Via
  5. The whimsical fantasy world of Gaudí is on display this morning as we embark on a sightseeing tour to see the inspiring, but as yet unfinished, La Sagrada Família in the company of a Local Specialist. We'll see Las Ramblas and Plaça de Catalunya, which lies at the heart of Barcelona, before paying tribute to Christopher Columbus at the monument that bears his name. This afternoon, consider joining an Optional Experience to the mountain-top monastery of Montserrat to see the shrine of the Black Madonna, the patron saint of Catalonia.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  6. The sweet scent of oranges accompanies us on our journey along the Costa Dorada south to fortified Peñiscola, where we'll see the ancient castle used in the film 'El Cid.' Continuing through fertile huertas, we arrive in sunny Valencia where we will stay the night. Our orientation of this cultural city includes views of the town hall, the Bull Ring, the Towers of Serrano and Quart, and the cathedral, which is said to home one of the Holy Chalices of the World. Witness the modern verve of Valencia and view the City of Arts and Sciences, a large-scale urban recreation center for culture and science, designed by Santiago Calatrava, before spending the rest of the evening at leisure

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Silken Puerta
  7. Journey via the dramatic Mora Pass to the city of Granada where we meet our Local Specialist for a sightseeing tour of the spectacular UNESCO-listed Alhambra. Its golden façades and extraordinary Moorish architecture reflect centuries of multi-cultural history, which you will have a rare opportunity to explore as you wander through its palaces and exotic water gardens. Check in to your hotel later, where you dine tonight.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
    hotel:Allegro
  8. Set your watch to Spanish time and enjoy a leisurely morning on your terms, or consider taking an Optional Experience to explore the medieval Moorish Quarter of Granada—Albayzín—with its narrow winding lanes, churches, minarets and palaces. We leave Granada behind for the sun-kissed shores of the Costa del Sol, where we'll spend the next two nights. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy. Stroll along the beachside promenade, relax at one of the nearby beach cafes or visit the picture-perfect white-washed Andalusian village of Mijas—the choice is yours.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Meliá
  9. Another day in paradise for you to kick back, worship the Spanish sunshine and taste la buena vida. Enjoy fresh seafood in Torremolinos, relax on the bleached beaches and soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere or consider an Optional Experience to the effervescent Andalusian capital of Málaga to explore centuries of history.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  10. A scenic drive takes you past the millionaire's resort of Marbella and on to La Linea. Cross to the Rock of Gibraltar, for free time to explore or consider joining an Optional Experience to St. Michael's Cave to see the Barbary Macaques (Rock Apes). This afternoon, continue through the Andalucian countryside past Jerez—famous for its sherry production—to Seville. Tonight we connect with locals over a Be My Guest dinner at the Morillo family olive oil mill. We'll stay at Hotel Las Casas de la Juderia, comprising a collection of elegant 15th-century Andalusian townhouses.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
    hotel:Las Casas De La Juderia
  11. Join your Local Specialist this morning for a tour of Seville's leafy avenues. See the iconic Giralda Tower, a former minaret converted to a bell tower, and visit the Seville Cathedral, the final resting place of Christopher Columbus. Stroll through Maria Luisa Park, with its tiled fountains, pavilions, palms and orange trees, and walk through the imposing Plaza de España. Explore the Jewish history of Spain in Seville's former Jewish Quarter, where a wall separated the Jewish community from the rest of the city during medieval times. Tonight, consider soaking up the fiery flamenco atmosphere in the city that made this passionate dance famous.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
  12. We journey to Córdoba to meet a Local Specialist for a visit to the astounding Mosque of the Caliphs, a jewel of Hispano-Islamic art featuring striking arches and Byzantine mosaics. Then visit the remains of the 14th-century Mudéjar-style synagogue in the old Jewish neighborhood, before spending the rest of the day at leisure admiring the city's extraordinary Moorish architecture and heritage. This evening we dine at our hotel.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast, Dinner with Wine
    hotel:Ayre
  13. We leave Andalucía and cross Don Quijote's la Mancha region, famous for its windmills, wines and cheese. The ancient imperial city of Toledo is our first stop today where we join a Local Specialist for a walking tour of the city's narrow streets. We'll visit the Church of Santo Tomé, home to one of El Greco's most famous paintings —'The Burial of Count Orgaz'—and the synagogue, the oldest one still standing in Europe. This evening we arrive in feisty Madrid, where we'll spend the next two nights.

    meal(s):Buffet Breakfast
    hotel:Rafael Atocha
  14. The grand plazas of Madrid take center stage today as we join our Local Specialist for a sightseeing tour of Spain's capital city. See Plaza de España, Gran Vía, Puerta Del Sol and the Cibeles Fountain before visiting the world-famous Prado Museum, featuring one of the world's finest collections of European art, including masterpieces by Velazquez. Spend the rest of the day at leisure exploring the city. Visit the Royal Palace with its spectacular Goya artworks, relax in the leafy Buen Retiro Park or enjoy the flavors and aromas of jamon in the Market of San Miguel. This evening, join your Travel Director and fellow travelers for an unforgettable Farewell Dinner to celebrate an epic adventure through Spain.

  • U.S. citizens traveling to Spain must have a current passport valid for six months beyond the conclusion of their trip. You can find information on how to apply for a passport here, and how to renew a passport here. No visa is required for U.S. citizens visiting Spain.

  • The currency in Spain is the Euro (€). While it’s a good idea to bring some money for when you first arrive, you’ll usually find a better exchange rate in your destination.  The most convenient way to obtain cash is to use your ATM card at local banks in Spain. We recommend you also bring a valid credit card for purchases while you are traveling.  It is important that you inform your financial institutions of your travel plans before you leave home so they don’t flag your purchases as potentially fraudulent charges.

  • One of the most enjoyable parts of traveling is sampling the local cuisine.  Spain offers a delicious selection of cured hams, chorizo sausage, seafood, cheeses, and more.  Try traditional dishes such as tortilla española (Spanish omelet), paella, and desserts such as flan, churros, and Catalan cream.

Lunch is the largest meal of the day in Spain, with many restaurants offering multi course menus at a fixed price.  For a quick lunch at a reasonable price, stop by a café, outdoor market, or food cart for a bocadillo, a traditional Spanish sandwich made with baguette-style bread, ham and cheese.

Tapas are small bites served in bars and restaurants that can be enjoyed as an appetizer or a meal. Try a variety of marinated olives, potatoes, croquettes, grilled octopus, and toasted bread with various toppings.

  • We suggest bringing a variety of lightweight clothing items that can be layered to save space in your suitcase.  This will also give you many options for how to dress in Spain’s different climates. Keep in mind that your shoulders and knees should be covered while visiting religious sites. For more helpful information please refer to our Packing Tips & Packing List.

  • Tipping in Spain is much less common than in the U.S. When dining out, it’s appreciated, although not required, to leave a few extra euros for your server, and up to 10 percent for particularly good service.  Leave your tip on the table rather than adding it to your credit card slip to ensure that your waiter receives it.

At the end of your guided vacation, it’s customary to offer your motor coach driver and Travel Director a gratuity. We recommend €3.00 per person/per day for your driver and €5.00 per person/per day for your Travel Director.  Recommended gratuity for a Local Host and Local Specialist is 1-2 euros per person, paid at the conclusion of each guided visit.  A convenient option is to prepay your tips before your departure.

  • Baggage on our trips is restricted to one large suitcase per person with dimensions not exceeding 30x19x10 inches and a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You are also permitted one piece of hand luggage, which should be small enough to fit under your coach seat or on the small overhead shelf compartment. Please note that luggage with an adjustable handle and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartment of the coach. Hotel porterage is included in your vacation.

  • You will need to be comfortable on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours in various weather conditions.  All of our vacations involve walking, often on cobblestone and uneven surfaces in historic city centers.  In order to get the most out of your vacation you need to be able to comfortably walk 1-3 miles unassisted in one day, be in good condition and be able to keep pace with the group.

If you need any medications, it is important that you bring enough to last you the whole trip and keep them in your carry-on bag while you travel.

  • We highly recommend our optional Travel Protection Plan, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure. The plan also includes trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and medical and emergency assistance. Click here for a summary of coverage details, terms and conditions.
